GYM

Gym
After Christmas and summer holidays most of the people (me included) decide to go to the gym to lose those kilos we have gained eating and drinking too much and being too lazy to walk or do some exercise.
I read this definition of a gym somewhere “ A gym is a place with people moving as fast as they can but staying in the same place or lifting things over and over that always end up where they started off”
I think gyms have changed a lot lately, or at least in my town. I went to the gym and the list of possibilities was longer than the menu in a good restaurant: Body Tonic, Body Balance, Aerobics, Spinning, Pilates, Step…. And the possibility of mixing two of them or even three if you are willing to go at weekends as well.
The prices are as varied as the offers.
I’m determined to suffer and sweat at least three times a week and to pay for it but I wonder “Is it worth being so relaxed during summer that I need at least three months to get rid of what I gained only in one?” and the answer is “Of course, if it wasn’t worth you wouldn’t have been doing it all your life”.
LA SIESTA
2006/08/29
Info (Show/Hide)
Siesta
Alter a good lunch like the paella that we prepared in the last podcast I think that to sleep a nap (siesta) is a good idea.
You can sleep a siesta in bed even some people wear their pyjamas but most of us sleep in the sofa usually with the TV or some music on and never more than 10 or 15 minutes.
My grandfather always said that you have to sleep a siesta holding some keys in your hand and to wake up with the noise of the keys slipping out of your hand, that’s not more than 10 minutes.
Not only Spanish people sleep after lunch, in tropical countries where the heat reduces work at midday the siesta is common and in Taiwan and Japan some offices have created special rooms for the workers to take a nap.
Our bosses are not so considerate towards employees but the Major of a Spanish city called Plasencia announced “It’s strictly forbidden to make noise in the streets from three to five in the afternoon during summer to guarantee that people can sleep their siesta”.
I’ve read somewhere that there is a biological need for afternoon naps and taking into account that people like Napoleon, Leonardo da Vinci, Edison and Einstein slept after lunch I have no doubts, the siesta is a good habit.
LA PAELLA

Paella.
¿Alguna vez has probado la paella?
Paella.
Have you ever tasted a paella? If you have ever been to Spain you have probably eaten one of the different Spanish paellas we prepare here. Although the place of origin of this famous dish is Valencia, each region has its own paella. You can prepare it using fish or meat. The only indispensable ingredient is “rice”.
But the paella is more than a dish it’s a tradition, people eat it on Sundays, to celebrate birthdays, family meetings, when you go to the countryside to spend a day and especially in summer time. We take the old paellera (a round flat pan) out of the garage and prepare a paella in the garden, something similar to what American people do with barbecues.
To prepare a paella is not easy but I’m a good cook and I’ve decided to share my recipe with you, you can find it in my blog “resources for students” pictures are included to make it easier.
First of all we are going to buy all we need to cook a paella, one of fish.
Teresa: Good morning.
Shop assistant: Good morning, Can I help you?.
Teresa: Yes, please. I need fish to prepare a paella for four people.
Shop assistant: Ok, then you need clams, mussels, squid, prawns and some monkfish for the stock.
Teresa: I will also take some hake for the stock.
Now for the vegetables
Teresa: Good morning
Shop assistant: Good morning. What do you need?
Teresa: I need red and green capsicum, two onions and garlic.
Shop assistant: here you are. Anything else?
Teresa: oh Yes!! I forgot. I also need some saffron please.
I have the ingredients and the paellera let’s go to http://ssl4you-resources.blogspot.com/ to prepare it and then to my garden to enjoy it with a fresh white Spanish wine.
Bon appétit (enjoy your meal)
MIRAR A LA DERECHA O A LA IZQUIERDA
2006/08/29
Info (Show/Hide)
Look Right. Look Left
Somebody said “to know where you have to go you must know first where you are” and this has been one of my biggest problems during my first week in Dublin..
Where is the river Liffey? Am I on the north side or on the south side? Which direction must I take? Where is the Cathedral?. I’ve been wondering all these questions for seven days and most of the times the answer was “no idea”.
In my country cars drive on the right and pass on the left, in Dublin it’s just the opposite, they drive on the left and pass on the right, so if you have to cross the street you always look at the wrong side. It took me a whole week to know where to look at. I’m surprised I’m still alive.
When I solved these two problems I started to enjoy my holidays and discovered parks, streets, buildings, pubs with live music….undoubtedly Dublin is a beautiful city but what really impressed me was the people, they are charming, friendly and always helpful with foreigners, you never feel alone in an Irish Pub.
I strongly recommend you to visit Dublin. A visit to Dublin is a Must.
Oh! I forgot to tell you that food is probably their weak point, take something with you or you will eat sandwiches and fast food but if you prefer Irish food you can always eat potatoes and broccoli, and about meat… they prepare it in a very different way as Spanish people do and of course you should taste it, I did and kept on eating sandwiches but it’s only an opinion.
This podcast was written in Dublin in July 17th at the” Brazen Head” in possibly the oldest pub in the city.
TOROS. SAN FERMIN
2006/08/29
Info (Show/Hide)
The running of the Bulls. San Fermín
If you like bulls and danger and you are free from 7th to 14th in July you should come to to Pamplona a city in Spain to watch the “Encierros”.
Every year thousands of visitors join local people to see how some brave people run for two or three minutes in front of some bulls from their pen up to the bull- ring. The length of the run is 800 metres. You don’t have to sign up anywhere to take part; you just enter into the run and choose the street where you will run.
At 8 in the morning spectators place behind the fences, runners are crowded together , and ask protection to the Saint , a rocket goes off at the moment the bulls are let out.
The bulls run so fast that is impossible to keep up with them for very long ,so when runners see the bulls are getting closer they run faster, when they arrive and after hanging in near for a short time they get out of the way as cleanly as possible.
There are always injured people, not only by bulls but also it’s quite normal to be knocked down and be trampled either by the bulls or by other runners.
Local runners always choose to run the same section and usually train 2during all year.
I always find a safe place to watch the run from behind the fences.

I got the fright of my life
Last week I got the fright of my life. I thought somebody had stolen my car and taking into consideration that my car is not “marvellous” I lost hope of finding it in one piece.
I had parked my car in the same place I usually do and I forgot about it for two days. I only drive my car to travel when I’m in the city I go walking or by bus.
When I arrived to use it I didn’t understand anything, my car was not there. At first I thought I was in the wrong place and thought for some seconds but I was sure I had parked the car just there.
Suddenly I thought it had been towed again and phoned them but they told me the car wasn’t there.
There was no other possibility, somebody had stolen my car. I decided to go to the police and reported it after waiting for more than half an hour.

The wedding
My sister got married last week, it was about time.
Eventually and after thinking a lot about it they decided to have a religious ceremony. The wedding at 6, the dinner at 8.
We arrived to the church at 5.30, my brother in law-to-be was a bit nervous wearing a blue suit, he went around looking at his watch, adjusting his tie and looking at his watch again, his mother tried to calm him down.
My sister arrived at one minute to six, walking arm in arm with my father who was going to give her away. Following the tradition the bride must arrive just on time. She was brilliant dressed in white and carrying a bunch of white flowers.
The ceremony was short and exciting, specially for the bride and groom.
After the mass we kept up the tradition, we threw rice to the couple to wish them good luck, the bride faced the other way and threw the bouquet and my cousin Carmen caught it. The tradition says that the woman who catches the bouquet will be the next bride. I have my doubts about Carmen, she is a convinced single.
We took hundreds of pictures, with and without the bride and the groom and eventually we went to have dinner.
The dinner was excellent and after dinner we went to dance. It was impossible to sleep after having had three dishes, cake, ice-cream and coffee.
At 2 a.m. I arrived home and took my shoes off and I thought that it was the only relaxing moment in that hectic day.

I NEED A NEW DRESS
My sister is going to get married next week and I needed a new dress for the wedding.
I went to the shop I usually go when I need something special, it’s normally a bit more expensive than other shops but they know what fits me better.
There were lots of new things, nice dresses in blue, black and multiple coloured skirts in all sizes, elegant trousers and shirts and t-shirts in all colours.
I explained to the saleswoman I wanted something elegant and different and after checking that I was a medium size she showed me five nice dresses, two A-line skirts and some trousers. I don’t like to wear trousers in summer and I rejected them. I tried the skirts and the dresses on and after half an hour faffing I decided that I looked wonderful in that black body fitting dress.
I closed my eyes upon the time to pay, gave her my Visa, signed the receipt and tried to forget the price before walking around the corner.
“It’s only once in a life time” I told myself.

DIRECCIONES
Angel: Por supuesto, diga me
Ana: De acuerdo, a ver si lo he entendido bien.
Siempre acabo preguntando.
I’m a disaster with directions
Last week I went to Madrid, I had to attend to a meeting in Alcala Street so I took a taxi from the railway station to arrive in time.
When the meeting finished I wanted to go to a bookshop in Gran Via street an took the tube, it’s easy to travel by tube and nearly impossible to get lost.
It was very early for my train so I decided to go walking to the Prado Museum. I was walking for more than an hour and although I knew I was near I didn’t get to orientate myself so I asked to a man who was reading a newspaper sitting on a bench.
Ana: Excuse me, can you help me?
Angel: Oh, sure, tell me
Ana: I want to go to the Prado Museum, I know it is not far but I’m lost
Angel: You are walking in the opposite direction
Ana: Really?
Angel: Yes, to get to the Prado Museum you have to turn around and go straight down this street until you reach the traffic lights. When you get there turn right and walk four blocks. You’ll see the building in front of you.
Ana: Ok, let me see if I have understood. I have to turn and go down until the traffic lights, turn right and go straight for a while to find it.
Angel: Exactly, you’ll be there in 10 minutes.
Ana: Thanks a lot, bye
As you can imagine I took a taxi to return to the station. I’m a disaster to orientate myself. I always end up asking

NECESITO MUEBLES
I NEED SOME FURNITURE
The five days I spent in Barcelona were marvellous, both the weather and the hotel were good and Barcelona is indeed a beautiful city. I may return next year.
I need some furniture for my new house and I’m at Ikea, the prices are not high and I like the design.
First I go to the dining room area where there are a lot of sofas and armchairs in different styles, sizes and prices. Also there are leather sofas, sofa-beds, with removable covers. I decide to buy a grey sofa and a leather armchair.
I also need a floor lamp but they are very expensive so I don’t buy it and go to see the bedrooms.
After seeing a lot of mattresses from latex, foam and polyurethane I buy a double bed with a latex mattress and two pillows.
The wardrobes are very big and I realize I need the dimensions of the room, so I stop looking at the wardrobes and buy two bedside tables and two lamps.
Finally I go to the kitchen area, I need a table and six chairs. After checking the washing-machines, dishwashers and fridges prices I decide to use the old ones at least a year more.
To buy new furniture is not a joke. I’m on the edge of ruin

Teresa: hola Esther, pasa. Te estaba esperando
Esther: Hola Teresa
The New House
Alter solving tons of problems I’m already living in my new house.
I’ve been living here for two weeks so everything is still untidy. The pictures are still on the floor, I’ve only placed the carpets because I don’t like rooms without them, but there are still a lot of things in the boxes.
I’m waiting for my friend Esther. I’ll show the house both of you at the same time.
Teresa: Hello Esther, come in. I was waiting for you
Esther: Hello Teresa
Teresa: I’ll put the coffee on
Esther: Hey, this house is very big. There are two floors.
Teresa: Yes, come here. This is the kitchen and here is the garden, here on the right it’s the dinning room and a toilet and this door leads to the garage.
Esther: And, upstairs?
Teresa: Let’s go upstairs. There are three bedrooms, a study and a bathroom.
Esther: The house is big and seems comfortable you will live very well here
Teresa: Have a look if you want. I’m going to serve the coffee.
Esther: Do you know what I like the most?
Teresa: No, what is it?
Esther: You have no neighbours near and you can listen to music loudly, you can even dance
Teresa: And do you know what the biggest disadvantage is?
Esther: Has it got any?
Teresa: I have to keep going up and down the stairs.
Esther: That is not a problem, you can get fit
Teresa: Do I need it?
Esther: No, of course not. I was teasing you.
