Episode 516: Looker
2023/08/20
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast didn’t ask ChatGPT for anything about this one, instead we asked filmmaker Brian Cunningham to join Mary and Nic for the 1981 sci fi thriller “Looker”. It also asks the important question- “if we cut out all the key plot dialogue will Susan Dey still take her clothes off?”. Join the B-Movie Cast for this trip to the uncanny valley of plot holes with Michael Crichton’s “Looker” because we’ve got it all man, we’ve got it made.

Info (Show/Hide)
This episode of the B-Movie Cast, Mary and Nic are joined by Juan to take a look at a classic of Mexican Cinema, that somewhat defies description: “The Exterminating Angel” (Spanish: El ángel exterminador). It’s a 1962 Mexican surrealist film written and directed by Luis Buñuel. It tells a story we can all identify with, what do you do when your party guests won’t leave? Only in this case there is an unknown compulsion preventing these wealthy aristocrats from vacating the scene. Not only can these folks not leave, but other people can’t come in either. It’s surrealism at its best with as much backstabbing, in fighting, classism, and scheming as any reality TV show, only this one doesn’t let the players exit… oh and there’s a bear too because… why not?
Check out “The Exterminating Angel” on the B-Movie Cast!

We wanted to check out one of his most iconic films in his honor: “Enter the Dragon”. Mary and Nic are lucky enough to be joined by actor, filmmaker, and writer Michael Worth. Michael worked with John on many projects and was his friend. He also took the time to sit down with John and record him as he recounted some of his memories of his long career. Michael is sharing a small segment of those recordings with us in this episode as John talks about going to Hong Kong to film our movie this episode “Enter the Dragon”.
“Enter the Dragon” wasn’t just any old martial arts film. It was the first real collaboration between the film industries of Hollywood and Hong Kong on a martial arts film. A joint production staring martial arts master Bruce Lee, middleweight Karate champion Jim Kelly and of course John Saxon who also had a black belt in Karate and was also accomplished at Judo.
“Enter the Dragon” would open the door for a new generation of martial arts films, showing the genre to be commercially viable in the American and European markets and setting the bar by which all future martial arts films would be judged.
So, grab some popcorn, crack open a cold beverage and get ready to check out the film where Bruce Lee asks the question “why doesn’t somebody just shoot this guy?”

2020/07/05
Info (Show/Hide)

While it’s a pretty standard horror fair from the 70s, with enough early FX artist Rick Baker magic to make it stand out, what really got Fiona’s attention was the southern gothic aspect of the film. Mary, who’s lived in the south for over 20 years, can’t quite see the forest for the trees when it comes to southern gothic, but she has figured out what really gets to her when it comes to horror films, and it’s not the gore. So, tune in and find out what’s wiggling through our minds after checking out “Squirm”. If you don’t then remember; you’ll be the worm face!

This is probably Mary’s favorite of the ‘barbarian’ 80s flicks and it’s definitely one that Nic saw on HBO at least a hundred times in the 80s.
“The Beastmaster” is from writer/director Don Coscarelli. Coscarelli is best known for the “Phantasm” film series and he brings his love of horror and the macabre to this sword and sorcery tale with some weird magic, crazy creatures, and the evilest Rip Torn the screen has ever seen!
So grab a beer and heat up your TV dinner because it’s time to follow the adventures of Dar, the Beastmaster, as he tries to save the day while not getting mauled by a tiger that’s annoyed at being painted black!
Episode 444: When Worlds Collide
2020/04/18
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast is back! Mary, Nic and Juan are checking out the 1951 Sci-Fi classic “When Worlds Collide”! This film helped set the bar for science fiction in the 1950s and still holds up today! Get your rocket ship ready because when worlds collide you don’t want to be stuck her on Earth! So grab a drink, warm up a TV dinner and take a trip to the edge of reality with “When Worlds Collide”!
Episode 443: This Island Earth
2020/04/11
Info (Show/Hide)
In this episode of the B-Movie Cast Mary and Nic are joined by Juan. The 70s and 80s are great and all, but it was time to head back to our B-Movie roots. We looked at the films we’d covered and realized that there were a couple of startling holes in our 50s’ movie coverage. One of them was the classic film “This Island Earth”!
The gang gets out our Interocitors and dives into this sci-fi classic. A big studio film that took 2 ½ years to make, “This Island Earth” is a favorite of ours and we think you’ll enjoy it too! So sit back, grab a beer, heat up that TV dinner and check out the new episode of the B-Movie Cast!
Episode 442: Trancers
2020/04/04
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast is back… sort of. We recorded a few episodes in preparation for Mary going off the air for 6-8 weeks during the nuclear plant shutdown she works at called ‘the outage’. What we didn’t know when we put these episodes ‘in the can’ was that Mary would be opting out of doing the outage this year due to health concerns. Don’t worry, she’s fine, she wanted to stay fine so she’s staying home with Kitty her cat. That said, we still have a few pre-recorded episodes and this is one of them!
The last pre-recorded episode was Nik Havert’s “Monster Music Cast” and now Mary and Nic back and we’re joined once again by Brian Cunningham, filmmaker, and co-owner of Thoughtfly Studios in Louisville Kentucky. The gang is checking out another 80s flick. This time it’s “Trancers” from 1985! This is a definite ‘Nic-pick’ film but that’s OK because everyone enjoyed it… even if Nic does end up spending half the cast defending the merits of this 80s ‘mockbuster’ of “The Terminator”.
By the way, what’s even better than doing a podcast on a time travel movie? Time-traveling during the time travel cast! Well, we did it! Mary, Nic, and Brian got together again to record the feedback and the contest sections of the cast. That’s right we visit the past during this episode! I don’t think we changed the future… we’ll see.
So don’t be a squid! Grab a drink, a TV dinner, and your long-second watch and check out the “Trancers” episode of the B-Movie Cast!
Episode 441: The Monster Music Special
2020/03/28
Info (Show/Hide)
This episode of the B-Movie cast is a bit different. Mary was going to be out of touch for 8-12 weeks with the nuclear plant shutdown she normally works. That didn’t happen because she retired from that gig due to concerns about working with a lot of people, in confined spaces for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week (and we’re glad she decided to quit that gig). However, in preparation for her outage we recorded a few episodes to have ‘in the can’. This is one of those episodes!
Special guest host for this show is Nik Havert! He’s the man behind the new book “The Golden Age of Disaster Cinema: A Guide to the Films, 1950-1979”. He also loves to introduce people to new music through his blog – 7th Level Music (http://www.7thlevelmusic.com/ ). So we asked him to do a special music cast for the show! Tune and check out some of Nik’s favorite monster-themed music!
Episode 440: YOR: Hunter from the Future
2020/03/21
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast is back again! This time we’re getting our furry-80s loin clothes out and tackling “YOR: Hunter from the Future”. As the theme song tells you he’s a man of mystery and always on the run, but we caught up with him!
Joining Mary and Nic is Dr. Adrian Smith. He’s back because he wasn’t happy with just 89 minutes worth of English language YOR- nope, he found the 210-minute-long, 4 part, Italian miniseries that was the original running length of this film!
So if you have an urge to see actor Reb Brown run through the desert and fight really slow, awkwardly moving dinosaurs then you’re in luck with this episode! But be warned, Reb Brown’s voice will occasionally comment on the show with his famous ‘cover up the burp’ line from the film! So grab a beer, heat up that TV dinner and sit back and enjoy the B-Movie Cast’s take on “YOR: Hunter from the Future” and while you’re at it, think about which of the sports you want to try out in the YOR-Olympics!
Episode 439: The Keep
2020/03/09
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast is back and this time we’ve got two special guests. Mary and Nic are joined by fan favorite, British photographer Mark Mawston, and filmmaker John Stevenson. The gang has decided to take on a cult favorite from the 80s- “The Keep”. It has got monsters, Nazis and all the synthesizer music they could cram into it. Some call it a horror film, some call it a fantasy, the director says it’s an adult fairytale and the box office in 1983 said it was a dud. This film suffered from the common problem of the studio (Paramount) taking the artistic vision of the director (Michael Mann) and tossing it into the trash as they cut the film from 3.5hrs to 2hrs and then finally to a nearly incomprehensible 96 minutes! But don’t worry, the B-Movie Cast is ready to make it all right! So get ready for some fun as we break down the movie and live our best life checking out what is really a 96 minute Tangerine Dream music video!
Episode 438: Ator the Fighting Eagle
2020/02/23
Info (Show/Hide)
It’s a new episode of The B-Movie Cast and this week Mary and Nic have a special guest: Dr. Smith! No, not the creepy one from “Lost in Space”. This is Dr. Adrian Smith, film historian and lecturer at The University of Sussex in the U.K.
Adrian has come down from his castle in Sussex to talk about the sword and sorcery ‘mock-buster’ that is “Ator: The Fighting Eagle” from 1982. This film has everything: magical swords (that aren’t that magical), evil wizards, monsters, Amazon women, a cute little bear cub and don’t forget miles and miles of Miles O’Keefe!
So sit back and get ready for some Italian knock-off fantasy film fun with “Ator: The Fighting Eagle”… oh and try not to worry about him not really being an eagle… that’s one of those things it’s best not to dwell on.
Episode 437: The People That Time Forgot!
2020/02/08
Info (Show/Hide)
This time on The B-Movie Cast, Mary, Nic and Juan are checking out the second lost continent of Caprona film with the AIP 1977 film “The People That Time Forgot”. It’s the sequel to the film from our last podcast on “The Land That Time Forgot” and begs the question, what’s wrong with time that it keeps forgetting stuff?
This time we have Patrick Wayne leading an expedition to find Doug McClure’s character Tyler from the first film. Times have been rough in Caprona though because there just aren’t that many dinosaurs to be found this time around. That’s OK though, the film makes up for it with the Naga, weird woman sacrificing, Japanese armor-wearing, samurai sword-wielding bad guys that live in the prototype for Castle Greyskull from “He-Man”.
So grab yourself a beer, heat up that TV dinner and let’s get ready to check out the second Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “The People That Time Forgot” (AKA: “Hogan Dates Out of His League!”).
Episode 436: The Land That Time Forgot
2020/01/26
Info (Show/Hide)
This episode of the B-Movie Cast Mary, Nic, and Juan get literary… well, sort of. The gang is checking out the 1975 adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' “The Land That Time Forgot”! This was an Amicus Productions film released in the US by American International Pictures.
We’ve got German U-boats, cavemen, dinosaurs and perhaps most terrifying of all: Doug McClure! So tune in and see what’s happening in Caprona, you know, that legendary land of the dinosaurs.
So grab a beer, warm up your TV dinner and get ready for some fun with the B-Movie Cast gang! But watch out there’s danger everywhere in “The Land That Time Forgot”!
Episode 435: Irony of Fate (Enjoy Your Bath)
2020/01/04
Info (Show/Hide)
This episode of the B-Movie Cast is a special look at a film that most people outside of the former Soviet Union probably haven’t heard of “Irony of Fate” (aka- Enjoy Your Bath). This 1975 film is the Russian go to film for New Year celebrations.
Joining Mary and Nic to discuss this film is our favorite expert on all things Russian: Matt Kowalski! We dig into the background of this film as well as the New Year holiday traditions that Russia adopted after Christmas went kaput under communism. So grab your favorite TV dinner, crack open a cold one (or for this pour yourself a shot of vodka) and check out “Irony of Fate” on the B-Movie Cast.

Episode 434: Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?
2019/12/22
Info (Show/Hide)
On this episode of The B-Movie Cast Mary, Nic and Juan are checking out a strange little sort-of Christmas movie called “Whoever Slew Auntie Roo”. It’s set in England and stars Shelley Winters, Mark Lester, and Ralph Richardson. It’s a take on the Hansel and Gretel story that takes some dark turns. So join the gang as we try desperately to find one character in this dark little film who isn’t absolutely despicable!
Episode 433: Clive Barker's Nightbreed
2019/12/08
Info (Show/Hide)
On this episode of the B-Movie Cast Mary and Nic are joined by two special guests from the U.K.: show regular, photographer & writer Mark Mawston and filmmaker John Stevenson (director of “Kung Fu Panda” and “Sherlock Gnomes”).
We start the show off with our top movie picks from 2019. We’re not just talking new films, we’re also looking at any movies we saw for the first time in 2019. Then the gang is taking a look at one of Clive Barker’s most interesting, and controversial, films: “Nightbreed” from 1990. This is a film that turns the idea of horror on its head. It asks the question “what if the monsters were the heroes?”. While Barker’s original film clocked in at over 2.5 hours, the studio released a heavily edited cut that just ran 1 hour & 42 minutes. However, we’re checking out one of the ‘director’s cut versions which has more than 20 minutes of additional footage.
So join us in looking at a lost gem featuring amazing make-up and practical special effects as well as a truly original story from one of horror’s legends; Clive Barker!
Episode 432: The Manitou
2019/11/29
Info (Show/Hide)
On this episode of the B-Movie Cast Mary, Nic and Juan are back and we’re asking a hard-hitting question: What do you get when you cross Native American lore, The 1970s and filmmaker William Girdler? Well it looks like it’s a topless woman shooting lasers out of her hands at the reincarnated spirit of an ancient Native American Shaman who grew from a lump on her back in less than a week… also known as “The Manitou”. Oh and let’s not forget that Tony Curtis shows up in this one dressed as a discount version of Dumbledore from “Harry Potter”. Yes, “The Manitou” is chock-full of all the goodness you’ve come to love from the filmmaker who brought us “Grizzly”, “Day of the Animals” and the infamous “Exorcist” clone film “Abby”.
So grab a beer, warm up that TV dinner and get ready to enjoy the film that proves Tony Curtis was spending a lot of money on alimony in the 1970s: “The Manitou”.
Episode 431: Viy
2019/11/11
Info (Show/Hide)
On this episode of the B-Movie Cast Mary and Nic are joined by special guest Matt Kowalski. Matt knows a thing or two about Eastern Europe and that’s good because this episode we’re going behind the Iron Curtain to check out “Viy”. Made in 1967 It’s the first real horror film to come out of the Soviet Union.
Based on a story by Nikolai Gogol, “Viy” tells the tale of a priest who must spend 3 nights in a tomb with a dead body. The problem is, that the dead body has a bit of a demon problem. Oh and the priest is really a seminary student who isn’t exactly the holiest of men.
So sit back, grab a beer and tune in to the newest episode of the B-Movie Cast!
Episode 430: The Shining
2019/10/27
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast is back! Welcome to our special Halloween episode featuring the return of long-time friend of the show Mark Mawston! The B-Movie Cast is back! This episode Mary and Nic welcome special guest Fiona Young-Brown, author, editor, ghost writer and owner of BritishFoodandTravel.com to the show. This is a favorite go-to monster flick for Nic and even more surprising, of Fiona’s too! So get ready to be lectured on the effects of mercury poisoning right before a bear that looks like a giant killer sausage shows up to rip your face off! But don’t worry, this is the B-Movie cast so no mutant bears were harmed in the making of this episode!
Episode 428: The Invisible Man (Japanese version) 1954
2019/09/22
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast knows you didn’t see this one coming… because it’s invisible! Last episode we looked at the Universal Horror classic “The Invisible Man”. This episode Mary, Nic and Juan tack the Japanese “Invisible Man” (A.K.A. – The Invisible Avenger). This 1954 flick is from TOHO Studios and if you haven’t heard of the film before it may be because another TOHO flick came out that year that sort of stomped on all the competition- that film was “Gojira” (Godzilla- King of the Monsters).
This telling of the story of an invisible man doesn’t much resemble the H.G. Wells story or its Universal Studios predecessor. However, it has its high points and the story has a lot more emotional punch to it. Word of warning though…. Don’t get Nic started on the one thing he really didn’t like in the film… you won’t hear the end of it!
So grab a TV dinner, a cold beer and sit back and relax with your friends at the B-Movie Cast as we check out TOHO Studio’s “The Invisible Man”!
Episode 427: The Invisible Man
2019/09/08
Info (Show/Hide)
This time on the B-Movie Cast the Mary and Nic are joined by filmmaker Brian Cunningham. Brian has never seen the 1933 Universal horror classic “The Invisible Man” so we decided it was time for him to see it. Though seeing “The Invisible Man” is tough, what with him being invisible and all, but we managed… I hear you if you shoot ink everywhere he’s not that tough.
Anyway, the B-Movie Cast is happy to have Brian in for this episode and we’re excited to be tackling another classic from the Universal Monster series! So sit back, grab a TV dinner and a beer and enjoy “The Invisible Man” on The B-Movie Cast!
Episode 426: The Astro Zombies
2019/08/25
Info (Show/Hide)
This episode of the B-Movie Cast thrill to the excitement as green energy goes wrong! That’s right Mary, Nic and Juan are looking at the only alternative energy powered monsters- the solar-powered Astro Zombies! Thrill as they run around randomly killing people while the heroes of the film spend all their time eating at some kind of Ponderosa/Strip Club hybrid. Oh and don’t forget the foreign (Russian? Chinese? Canadian?) spies out to steal the secret of the Astro Zombies. Plus John Carradine is also in the film as the mad scientist who keeps using psycho killers for his zombie experiments and then wondering why they go around murdering everyone!
So grab a beer, warm up the TV dinner and enjoy The Astro Zombies on this episode of The B-Movie Cast!
Episode 425: The Swarm
2019/08/04
Info (Show/Hide)
The B Movie Cast is back! This episode is going to be a disaster but in a good way! Special guest Nik Havert joins Mary and the other Nic to talk about his new book on disaster movies from the 50s through the 70s. The team is also checking out the film that bought Michael Caine’s Mom a house… and did little good for anyone else: The Swarm! Yes, it’s killer bees and an all-star cast! The perfect combination for success… if only the movie wasn’t so bad!
Episode 424: 3 Dev Adam- AKA- The Turkish Spiderman
2019/07/23
Info (Show/Hide)
The B-Movie Cast is back and this time we’re taking on a real Turkish delight… “3 Dev Adam”. This film (also known as “3 Giant Men” and “The Turkish Spiderman”) is a real doozy! Someone forgot to tell Turkey that most of the world recognizes copyright law. So Turkey’s film industry has a bit of a reputation for ripping off western hit films… think “Turkish Star Wars”, “Turkish Rambo”, etc.…
In this cinematic spectacle, Spiderman isn’t your friendly neighborhood teen hero. He’s a sadistic arch-criminal who, along with his sadistic girlfriend Nadja, is murdering everyone he can while running an extremely overly complicated criminal smuggling/counterfeiting ring. Only the combined forces of Mexico’s greatest hero: Santo, America’s greatest hero: Captain America, and, because they needed a third person… Captain America’s girlfriend Julia, can stop Spiderman before he kills even more innocent people.
Join Mary, Nic, and Juan as they take a bite out of crime with this Turkish superhero film!
Episode 423: Monster Bash 2019
2019/07/07
Info (Show/Hide)

Episode 422: Time After Time
2019/06/03
Info (Show/Hide)
Hey B-Movie Cast listeners! Mary, Nic and Juan are continuing the theme of time travel from last episode with the newest one! Last time Lyle Swann went back in time from 1983 to 1877. Well this episode we look at the 1979 classic “Time After Time” where H.G. Wells chases Jack the Ripper from 1893 London to the streets of 1979 San Francisco!
Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen star along with David Warner (the guy you get when it’s gotta be British, but Michael Caine isn’t available) in this tale of time travel, romance and murder! Be warned though, this episode features spoilers and you won’t be able to turn back the clock once you’ve heard them, so if you haven’t seen it yet, check it out then come back! If you have seen it, sit back, grab some popcorn and a beer and get ready to go from London to San Francisco in less than a minute on another time traveling B-Movie Cast!
Episode 421: Time Rider The Adventure Of Lyle Swann
2019/05/12
Info (Show/Hide)
In this episode of The B-Movie Cast Mary, Juan and Nic ask the question: “What if a motocross racer were to accidentally be sent back in time to the old west and he didn’t notice?” Well, fortunately, Michael Nesmith of the 60s band The Monkees asked the same thing, only he made a movie about it! That’s right this episode is about the time traveling western motorcycle film- “Time Rider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann”.
“Time Rider” stars Fred Ward (“Tremors”, “Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins”) and features all those actors you recognize but just can’t quite name… like that guy from that movie that was out that one year… Oh and Peter Coyote!
So sit back, grab a TV dinner, a beer and tune in for “Time Rider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann” on the B-Movie Cast!

The film features ghosts, including Napoleon of all people…, romance, a murder, a mystery, a musical number, a nutty professor, and a lost city! What more could you ask for? How about seven hunchbacks? Nic counted them, and they are all there… we’re still not sure why though!
