PodcastSteve's Radio Archives: 8/26/1976 Aircheck, Hidden Bobbie Gentry Songs in "Ode to Billy Joe" Movie
2017/09/01
Info (Show/Hide)
In 1976, Robbie Benson and Glynnis O'Connor starred in a movie version of the Bobbie Gentry folk classic, "Ode to Billy Joe." At the time of the movie's release, I was a student DJ at WMCX-FM at Monmouth University. I was also the "production engineer" for some basement tape recordings my dad made with a musical colleague from Fort Monmouth, NJ who happened to be Bobbie Gentry's brother. After one visit with his sister during which he shared the music tapes he and my dad recorded, he returned with a complete set of Bobbie Gentry albums for me.
Needless to say, I became very familiar with her music, and when I saw the movie, I was quite surprised by all the hidden references to her other songs in the movie. None of that got very much attention at the time, so I decided to do a radio show special focusing on the hidden references. That show aired August 26, 1976 and is shared here for the first time in podcast form.

How Fast Can you Run is a novel that spans three continents and relates the story of people affected by genocide. This story also includes what happens when its protagonist is resettled in America and faces discrimination. The novel follows five-year-old "Lost Boy" of Sudan Michael Majok Kuch as he gets separated from his mother, escaping their burning village in the middle of the night, to his thousand mile trek, barefoot and naked, across war zones and wilderness, to a series of refugee camps where he lives for the next ten years. In 2000, he, along with approximately 4,000 other unaccompanied minors, is selected for political asylum in the U.S., where he is eager to use America’s resources—internet, telephone and postal services—to continue his search for his mother. His new life in America is not without trauma. He attends high school, and afterwards, a mostly white college, where another student falsely accuses him of sexual assault.
Millan, who holds a MFA from the University of Iowa Writers Workshop, is a prizewinning poet and writer. For the past three years, she has brought Drexel undergraduate creative writing students to the PEN center outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti for a week-long writing trip. JSA2016-20: Sociology of Aging, Thomas Cole Ph.D.
2016/09/09
Info (Show/Hide)
The September 9, 2016 Jewish Sacred Aging podcast features a rebroadcast of Rabbi Address' interview with Thomas Cole, Ph.D., Director, McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics and McGovern Chair in Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) on the sociology of aging.
About the Guest
Thomas Cole Ph.D.
Dr. Cole has published many articles and books on the history of aging and humanistic gerontology. His book The Journey of Life: A Cultural History of Aging in America (Cambridge University Press, 1992) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He is senior editor of What Does It Mean to Grow Old? (Duke, 1986), the Handbook of Humanities and Aging (Springer, 1992; 2nd edition, 1999), and Voices and Visions: Toward a Critical Gerontology (Springer, 1993). Other co-edited books include The Oxford Book of Aging (noted by the New Yorker as one of the most memorable books of 1995) and Guide to Humanistic Studies in Aging: What Does It Mean to Grow Old? (Johns Hopkins U Press, 2010).
Biography and Civil Rights Film
Cole’s interest in the life stories of older people has taken him into biography and film-making. In 1984, he encountered a hospitalized psychiatric patient who claimed he was the “original Texas integration leader.” Their collaboration resulted in a book—No Color Is My Kind: The Life of Eldrewey Stearns and the Desegregation of Houston (University of Texas Press, 1997)—and an accompanying film, The Strange Demise of Jim Crow , broadcast nationally on over 60 PBS stations and internationally by the State Department. The documentary received numerous awards and was nominated for a regional Emmy and a National Humanities Medal.
Medical Humanities Writing and Films
Cole’s film, Still Life: The Humanity of Anatomy , was an official selection at the Doubletake Documentary Film Festival in April 2002. This work explores the special yet unstated relationship between medical students in the anatomy lab and the people who donate their bodies for dissection. In 2001, Cole’s writing workshop programs for elders was featured in the PBS documentary Life Stories . In 2007, he co-produced Living with Stroke , a prize-winning film about the invisible world of stroke survivors. Cole is senior editor of the book Faculty Health in Academic Medicine: Physicians, Scientists and the Pressures of Success (Humana, 2009), which explores the impact of the spiritual and economic crises facing academic health centers today. Other collaborative books include: The Brewsters , an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure fictional text in health care ethics (UTHealth, 2011) and, with Nathan Carlin and Ron Carson, Medical Humanities: An Introduction (Cambridge University Press, 2014).
Cole’s work has been featured in the New York Times, National Public Radio, Voice of America, PBS, and at the United Nations. He has served as an advisor to the United Nations NGO Committee on Aging, the Union for Reform Judaism and various editorial and foundation boards. In 2004-2005, he served as a consultant to the President’s Council on Bioethics project on aging and was featured speaker at the AARP/United Nations Briefing Sessions on Aging in February 2009.
His current project is A Country for Old Men , a book exploring the lives, ideas, and identities of contemporary male elders.

Alan Spector retired from a 33-year career with the Procter & Gamble Company in 2002, as Director of Worldwide Quality Assurance, and he began “practicing retirement” five years before that. Al has written and published five books (www.aaspector.com ), as well as numerous magazine and newspaper articles, and he is working on books six and seven. He also does strategic planning and quality assurance consulting for companies and non-profits, works out daily, is an avid crossword solver, is an active community volunteer, leads a mentoring program at the high school from which he graduated, and has sat on several boards. Jewish Sacred Aging Podcast 2016-12: Rabbi Dr. David Teutsch, director of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Seminar's Center for Jewish Ethics
2016/06/03
Info (Show/Hide)
On the June 3, 2016 edition of the Jewish Sacred Aging Podcast, Rabbi Address speaks with Rabbi David Teutsch Ph.D., director of the Center for Jewish Ethics at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wynnewood, PA.
Rabbi David Teutsch, Ph.D. is a man in motion, a multi-tasker with many interests. Trained as a rabbi, he earned his doctorate from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania; is past president of RRC; and currently leads RRC's Center for Jewish Ethics. Teutsch has spearheaded several projects devoted to Jewish leadership and its ethical basis in Jewish texts. His 2009 book, Making a Difference: A Guide to Jewish Leadership and Not-for-Profit Management, was based on a 15-month training program he led in Baltimore for future Jewish organizational presidents; the program, called Acharai!, combined course material on nonprofit management with lessons from Jewish texts on leadership and values. "To be a Jewish leader (as opposed to just a leader in a Jewish organization or a leader who just so happens to be Jewish) means to act like a mensch," Teutsch says. "It means you must guide by Jewish virtues and values, including integrity, courage, humility, gentleness and empathy. "Especially in these tough economic times, congregational and organizational leaders--whether staff or volunteer--should ask themselves: If everyone acted as I do, would the organization be a success? Would it help to build relationships and community? Would the Jewish community's commitments to Jewish learning, spirituality and social justice be what I would like them to be?" Looking back on Acharai!, Teutsch recalls a class in which he discussed the nuances of exercising power, authenticity and leadership. To make the discussion accessible to participants, he described the implications of the biblical story of Gideon, who, against all odds, succeeded as a military leader and then decided not to become king. The lesson: Good leadership is different from self-aggrandizement. "Ultimately, the goal is to integrate Jewish values and text with a sophisticated approach to leadership in the nonprofit environment," Teutsch says.
Boomer Generation Radio, WWDB-AM 860, 05/31/2016: A conversation with Dr. Dan Gottlieb
2016/05/31
Info (Show/Hide)
Nationally known author, psychologist, and radio show host Dr. Dan Gottlieb is the guest on the May 31, 2016 edition of Boomer Generation Radio, to discuss the broad topic of love. Dan Gottlieb began his practice in 1969 after receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees at Temple University. As a young psychologist, his early career specialized in addictions where he ultimately was the director of a community based treatment program at Belmont Institute in Philadelphia. At the time he was director of two outpatient clinics and one inpatient unit supervising over 30 staff. He was also a graduate of the highly respected Family Institute of Philadelphia, a program that later elected him as president. img_about_dan720x400During this time he became a highly respected clinician, teacher and supervisor of psychiatrists, psychologists and clinical social workers. He taught at Hahnemann University and consulted with many other faculty members throughout the region. Personally, he was happily married and had loved being a father to his young daughters. However, his early successes were tragically interrupted. In 1979 Dan was in a near fatal automobile accident which left him paralyzed from the chest down. As expected, there were years of despair and depression. He experienced loss on top of loss as his wife left the marriage and passed away several years later. And in the ensuing years he mourned the loss of his sister and his parents. And for the last three decades, he has been observing life with passion and discussion and learning valuable lessons about what it means to be human and how adversity can teach us how to live better and love better. Despite this adversity, he resumed his private practice which was to grow substantially over the next several decades. In addition to his practice, he has continued to lecture, train and supervise a variety of healthcare professionals. Since 1985, Daniel Gottlieb has been hosting “Voices in the Family,” an award-winning mental health call-in radio show aired on WHYY 90.9 FM, Philadelphia’s local public radio station. From 1993 until 2008, he wrote a highly regarded column for the Philadelphia Inquirer titled: “Inside Out,” reflecting his perspective on the intersection of the events in our world and the events in our minds and hearts. He has also published four books, including the international bestseller: Letters to Sam: A Grandfather’s Lessons on Love, Loss, and the Gifts of Life. His newest book, The Wisdom We’re Born With: Restoring Faith in Ourselves, was released in March, to rave reviews from mental health professionals around the country. All of his royalties will be donated to the Khulani school for disabled children in South Africa. In addition to his writing and radio show, he delivered over 1000 lectures all over the world on a variety of topics affecting the well-being of people, families and the larger community. The essence of his philosophy can be found on his business card. After his name there are no degrees and no fancy titles. His card simply says “Gottlieb. Human.” Through personal and professional experience, Dan has learned that our greatest suffering is alienation and loneliness. That is these powerful emotions can produce prejudice, hatred, violence, withdrawal and depression. He has learned that all humans long for human contact, compassion and understanding. And without compassion, our spirits wither. When asked to summarize his life’s work, he says simply: “I teach kindness.”

Transwestern: Surveying GenX-ers, ‘Neglected Middle Child’ In The Workplace
2016/05/19
Info (Show/Hide)
Matthew Dolly, Research Director, Transwestern
PARSIPPANY, NJ— Members of Generation X, those born from 1965 to 1980, “the neglected middle child” in offices that also contain Baby Boomers and Millennials, are more like their Boomer predecessors than the younger Millennials, a recent Transwestern report discovered.
The development, real estate investment management and research firm explored the generational preferences of office employees in a recent survey of its own workers organized by New Jersey research director Matthew Dolly .
“I came up with the idea last summer,” Dolly tells GlobeSt.com exclusively. “You’re always reading about Millennials, you have the Baby Boomers, who for the most part built up the office market. But you never read about Gen X, because they were a smaller generation and they were only the largest part of the workforce for a few years.”
Gen Xers are between 35 and 50, and in the next 20 years will be 55-70, Dolly says.
“We’re going to be the executives, we’re going to make the decisions, so right now we have to work with the Baby Boomers and with the Millennials, their children behind them,” he says, noting that he falls squarely in the middle of the Gen X demographic.
The research and commentary, titled “The Gen X Factor: Stuck in the Middle or Best of Both Worlds?” compares the responses of 273 Transwestern team members classified as Baby Boomers (born 1946 – 1964), Gen Xers (born 1965 – 1980) and Millennials (born 1980 – 1998).
Many developers have skipped from what Baby Boomers wanted and expected in office arrangements directly to what Millennials want, such as urban live-work-play locations, Dolly says. But Gen Xers enjoy a mix of office designs and locations, his research shows.
“They did like the option of a private workspace and abundant light, not as many used mass transit as the millennials, but Gen Xers and Baby Boomers prefer the suburbs,” he says. Gen Xers like flexible work hours with some structure, he adds.
In nearly all cases, the responses of Gen Xers fall somewhere between Baby Boomers and Millennials, highlighting the unique blend of views this generation possesses – a mix of seasoned experience and savvy thinking that was the fortuitous byproduct of being sandwiched between two large generations.
“Although Millennials are now the largest segment of the US labor force, companies that value workforce diversity benefit from a broader range of ideas and experiences,” says Dolly . “At the same time, while it is easy to create divisions between age groups, we found that there are just as many commonalities as differences between these three influential generations.”
You can hear a podcast of GlobeSt.com’s conversation with Matt Dolly in the player below.
Some of the survey’s findings include the following:
Flexibility is highly valued by all generations, with only 11 percent of total respondents favoring mandatory “9 to 5” hours in the workplace. Across all groups, flex hours – characterized by an alternative, yet defined schedule – is preferred over no set hours, with Generation X voicing the strongest preference for this type of flexibility. All generations agree that there is a high correlation between work environment and productivity. When it comes to the amenities that contribute to a comfortable environment, privacy and abundant light ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, for every group of respondents. Open offices, or “hoteling,” was viewed most favorably by Millennials, while private offices received the most votes from Baby Boomers. However, in total and by generation, respondents overwhelmingly prefer a mix of private and open office space. The preference for downtown living more than tripled between Baby Boomers and Millennials, at 19 percent and 64 percent, respectively. The importance of social media to professional life is inversely related to age: only 4 percent of Baby Boomers feel that social media is very important, compared to 7 percent of Gen Xers and 20 percent of Millennials. Of the Generation X respondents, 56 percent reported that they identify more strongly with Baby Boomers, and 44 percent reported that they identify more strongly with Millennials. This gives Gen Xers, as a whole, a broad perspective of the wants and needs of today’s workforce.
“Because of their age and experience, Gen Xers are often a natural fit for leadership positions,” Dolly said . “This group is equipped to bring proven skills and thoughtful creativity that enables all generations to make valuable contributions and positions the organization to excel.”
