This week I want to honor a friend and announce a move.

Congratulations to Rick Ector on his recent appointment to the NRA Board of Directors. I personally know how much this means to him and know he will do the best he can as a representative of firearms trainers, counselors, and gun rights activist. The guy has been focused and determined to save the lives of people in his home state of Michigan, especially the cities and women. He has single handedly created a space for women of color to get exposed and familiar with firearms in an untraditional environment. As a gun rights activist, Rick is a force of nature. He could become a politician if he weren't so nice, respectable, and honest. He often credits me for getting him involved but Rick didn't need me, I just fed the spark he had and it turned into a blaze. He is proof that determination, and positive thinking can do great things. Having a positive attitude means you have an optimistic outlook. That guy has taken the Second Amendment and the gun rights community to the level it should be. He has optimism. He has hope. He believes that if he keeps chugging on things will work out well. Being voted on the board of director for the National Rifle Association is a bigger deal to Rick that the rich and famous peers with him. I am proud to call him a friend. Like he says, "True Story."

Gun Rights Activist Wanted Time for a change. New podcast coming called Doable!

The BMWAG is looking for experienced gun rights activists to join our team in advocating for the rights of gun owners.

We are looking for an individual with experience in grassroots campaigns, political organizing, and public outreach. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing strategies to expand our membership base and increase public awareness of our mission.

The ideal candidate should have a deep knowledge of the history and current debates surrounding gun rights, extensive experience in creating and managing successful advocacy campaigns, and excellent communication and public speaking skills.

The successful applicant will be a self-starter, highly organized, and able to work independently to achieve our organization’s goals. They will be expected to travel frequently and represent our organization at public events.

If you have a passion for gun rights and a track record of successful advocacy, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your resume and a cover letter detailing your relevant experience.

The perfect candidate, is self motivated and financially sound. you have to operate as a non profit though you won’t get money by doing it that way. Gun ownership requires responsibility. There is more mental energy required than just owning a gun and shooting it recreationally. (that is what I mean by Shooting is Mental)

Training will save you money and save your life. Seek some before you buy and you’ll thank me. Firearm ownership is not for everyone but it should be for anyone who has not given up his or her right to do so. Buying a firearm should be an educated decision not an emotional one.

Shooting is mental because you have to navigate fact from fiction, and hype from reality. You have to make some judgement calls. You have to train your brain not to do what you have seen on TV or on social media. You have to make decisions that are literally life or death. Am I prepared to defend myself? Am I ready to go through with what is coming after I stop a bad guy? Can I handle the political foolishness? Have I been on the right side of this thing? Who do I believe now? Where do I get training from? Who is legit and not a mall ninja ?

Shooting is mental.

These days everybody is an expert. Who do you trust to teach your family? Are you going to become a competitor? Going to start a club? Going to join one?

Then there is the racism, sexism, separatism that is HUGE in this community. Us vs them. If you aren’t careful you’ll get sucked up in the foolishness. Yeah I said it. Foolishness, it’s one of the reasons after 30 years of gun rights activism you don’t see me at conventions and events.

Below are a list you will probably see each time you go to a public range, learn them. A more in depth reason for them will follow.

1. Treat all guns as if they were loaded.

2. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

4. Be sure of your target and what's beyond it.

5. Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting.

6. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before shooting.

7. Don't alter or modify your gun, and have guns serviced regularly.

8. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

9. Use correct ammunition.

10. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the firearm before you use it.

Situational awareness literally means to be constantly aware of your situation. Now in terms of security, it means to be constantly aware of your security situation and identifying potential threats and dangerous scenarios. This sounds a bit stressing to be aware of risks and danger all the time, specially if you live in a high risk level neighborhood or city.

So we want to focus on how to achieve this awareness in a relaxed way.

Situational awareness is more a state of mind than a learned skill. This is important not only for security agents and corporations, but also and most important for individuals to learn how to identify criminal behavior and other dangerous threats around them so they can react accurately and defend themselves and others.

Condition White : total unawareness. The news is full of these oblivious victims. Condition Yellow : a relaxed awareness, the optimal everyday state of being. Unless you are wealthy, recreationally shooting is expensive. The firearm can cost $400-$4500. Range time for indoor ranges is $15-25 an hour. Ammunition, targets, and safety equipment vary. If you are on a budget, good with your money or want to save a few dollars here are some tips that will help you do that. This will be the first in a series, I will provide for you from time to time. You don’t like blowing money do you?

Firearms, pistols in particular are almost impulse buys. They are advertised by movies, screen heroes and the cool kids wherever they are these days.

Range fees have stayed the same for the most part but there are so many new shooters now that it is now unheard of to have an hour wait to use an indoor range. Believe it or not, that wasn’t the case just a few years ago.

Ammunition increased during the Trump years and hasn’t returned to normal. Your gun food is important. Back in the day, when firearm tolerances varied and you had to get gunsmiths to “work” out the rough edges and give love to a handgun just so that it was consistent, ammunition was crucial. Not all guns worked well with all the brands and grades of ammunition available. It is a little less the case now although you will find out that with practice, there is some ammo that works best for you. Different loads, bullet weights, etc. in your firearm do different things when you are behind it. You won’t know that from the box or necessarily from the recommendation from your shooting partner.

Depending on your shooting schedule, goals, type of firearm, I suggest you buy your ammo in bulk. I’m talking about 1000 rounds of practice ammo. And 100 rounds of self-defense stuff.

At the onset, 1000 rounds seems like a lot but if you are shooting a semi-auto handgun that has a ten round magazine because you live in one of THOSE states like I do. And you have three magazine that’s 30 rounds. They sell the good stuff at 25 rds a box typically so you might pay $21-49.00 a box of 25.

an Emergency Personal Injury Kit (EPIK) a rapid-application tourniquet. eye and ear protection. a notebook and pen (for recording your rounds fired and perhaps notes on your training and performance) a cloth for wiping down your firearm and magazines after training.

If you get tired, learn to rest, not quit.Success if being able to continue just one more time after failing or falling.As crappy as things are for you right now, they will be the good old days for your kids, nieces and nephews.Somebody.

This is a little update on the situation. If you have been following me for the past ten months you know that my wife had a brain tumor removed that incapacitated her. The family has been devastated.

Last Friday, after recovering from being bedridden, and having pneumonia (twice), two blood clots, and fungal meningitis, she had surgery to relieve pressure in her brain. God clicked the switch and she is talking again.

She’s almost 100% back mentally. She wants to eat and was able to swallow water. It’s amazing and so God!

Make sure you have health benefits. Get long term care insurance. Have someone that will advocate for you if you can’t speak. Visit the sick. Believe and worship God. He is worthy!

What is the best gun for a woman/female? Fascism First Amendment Beware of the mob mentality/ group think.
I got off topic a little talking about the PC terms of woman or female. It does relate though to the topic. I am not trying to offend or trigger you, if this is a touch point but I want to be honest with who I am.

I remember the days when firearms instructors would tell women what type of firearms they thought best. These guys would not do well In todays gun culture. It was the culture to be sexist, homophobic, and/or racist. While I am getting my self in all kinds of trouble let me say this unapologetically that I tip my hat, applaud and appreciate all the women, Gay, Lesbian and Trans friends that are around my age plus or minus 20 years that are in the gun movement. You have managed to get proficient and survive in a culture I didn’t realize was as bad as it was. As a person of color, a black guy, negro, afro American, African American, black not Hispanic - I dealt with color and race issues. I can’t fathom adding that to gender equality and sexual preference too. Some times, my background, and the legacy of those instructors and living creep into my verbiage. I apologize in advance.

So what is the best handgun for a female? The one she owns and learns how to use the best.

After 14 years of podcasting this show, I didn’t want it to “podfade” just because I am going through a tough time. I decided with the support of some of you to “do me” which was my suggestion of changing the show, cancelling some of the others I have and combining them into this one the flag ship podcast. I will always be the Black Man With A Gun (trademarked), and still be pro-gun. I am no longer alone in the universe though. There are a bunch of young guns that never even heard of me spouting stuff on social media. It’s ok. I had my turn. Now I seek to continue to motivate, inspire, support and encourage you. Always treat the gun as loaded. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it. Never point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the gun you are using. Always use proper Ammunition. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before loading and shooting. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold your shooting position for several seconds; then with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully unload the gun. Don't rely on the gun's safety to keep it from firing. Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so you don't trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and/or fire the gun at anyone or anything.

Before the Civil War ended, State "Slave Codes" prohibited slaves from owning guns. After President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and after the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolishing slavery was adopted and the Civil War ended in 1865, States persisted in prohibiting blacks, now freemen, from owning guns under laws renamed "Black Codes." They did so on the basis that blacks were not citizens, and thus did not have the same rights, including the right to keep and bear arms protected in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as whites. This view was specifically articulated by the U.S. Supreme Court in its infamous 1857 decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford to uphold slavery.

Dred Scott, a slave born in Virginia, was purchased by John Emerson in Missouri in 1820. Emerson then traveled with Scott to Fort Armstrong, Illinois and from there to Fort Snelling, Wisconsin. Both Illinois and Wisconsin prohibited slavery. Scott and his wife stayed in Wisconsin when Emerson returned to Missouri. Since Emerson leased their services to other white people in Wisconsin, he violated the Missouri Compromise as well as other laws against slavery in that region. When Emerson moved to Louisiana, Scott and his wife joined them. Their daughter was born in a steamboat on the Mississippi River, which technically made her a free person because she was born in free territory. Emerson soon returned to Wisconsin, but his wife took Scott and his wife back to Missouri when Scott served in the Seminole War. Emerson ultimately died in Iowa, and his widow inherited Scott, whose services she continued to lease to others. Emerson's widow rejected an attempt by Scott to buy his family's freedom, which led to legal action. Scott argued that his wife and he were legally emancipated because of their residence in free territories. Missouri courts had ruled in favor of similarly positioned slaves, but his case was initially dismissed on a minor procedural ground. Eventually, the jury did rule in his favor, but Emerson's widow appealed. She had moved to Massachusetts by then and given Scott to her brother, John F.A. Sandford. Upon appeal, the Missouri Supreme Court reversed earlier decisions in this area and ruled that Scott was not required to be emancipated because he had failed to sue for his freedom when he was living in a free state. When Sandford moved to New York, Scott resumed his legal action there in federal court, since diversity jurisdiction applied.

On March 6, 1857, in the case of Dred Scott v. John Sanford, United States Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney ruled that African Americans were not and could not be citizens. Taney wrote that the Founders' words in the Declaration of Independence, “all men were created equal,” were never intended to apply to blacks. Blacks could not vote, travel, or even fall in love and marry of their own free will — rights granted, according to the Declaration, by God to all. It was the culmination of ten years of court battles — Dred Scott's fight to live and be recognized as a free man.

The High Court's decision went even further, declaring laws that restricted slavery in new states or sought to keep a balance between free and slave states, such as the Missouri Compromise, were unconstitutional. In essence, Black Americans, regardless of where they lived, were believed to be nothing more than commodities.

The Taney court was dominated by pro-slavery judges from the South. Of the nine, seven judges had been appointed by pro-slavery Presidents — five, in fact, came from slave-holding families. The decision was viewed by many as a victory for the Southern “Slavocracy,” and a symbol of the power the South had over the highest court.

The dramatic ripple effect of Dred Scott — a ruling historians widely agree was one of the worst racially-based decisions ever handed down by the United States Supreme Court — reached across the states and territories. It sent shivers through the North and the free African-American community. Technically, no black was free of re-enslavement.

Justice delayed is justice denied " is a legal maxim. It means that if legal redress or equitable relief to an injured party is available, but is not forthcoming in a timely fashion, it is effectively the same as having no remedy at all.

Gun control is tied to politics.

It is one of the evergreen subjects of American politics. As soon as you legally purchase a gun you become a part of the system that blames you for every mass shooting. It doesn’t matter if you think that it is only a certain caliber or type of firearm that anti-rights politicians and the public is after or not.

What do they want?

It is not the assault rifles. It is not the large capacity magazines. It is not the firearms used in the crime. It’s yours too.

It’s not fair. It’s not practical. It’s not ethical but it is how it is. You will be looked at funny if you don’t agree to give away a gun you paid more than $400 for. You will be falsely accused if you disagree.

Welcome to gun ownership community.

We are a pretty diverse group. There is a group for everyone. In my 30 years in this space I have seen groups that are a melting pot of Americans. I have seen the all black ones, all white ones, the GLBT ones, the latin and asian ones, the women only ones, the military wannabe ones, the police ones, the NRA ones, the state ones, the high powered rifle ones, the 22 rifle ones, the hunters and the weekend warrior ones. There are the tactical ones, the urban ones, the former combat military ones, the ones that love training, and those that don’t, there’s the social media ones, the competition ones, the rich people only ones, Trump supporters and “Never Trumpers”, Republicans, Democrats, liberals, conservatives and independents, militants and uncles and ants, and a mixture of all the above.

Gun control is the most supported in the urban areas, where the absence of police is going to felt the strongest. Rethink that folks. There are more good police officers than bad. Shout out to all that are out there right now, getting no love but doing what is necessary.

A big concern is really not where we stand at the moment but in what direction we are going.

Are you standing still, going backwards or moving forward. We still only have one life to live. And if you do it right, that is enough.

All the arguments for gun control are OLD. They are not new. Grab a couple and work out an original response to it. Make it your own so when you hear it or read about it you can respond.

We need more activist.

Gun controllers twist words to distort the debate in their favor. “Gun violence” is a propaganda substitute for crime, murder or assault. A so-called “assault weapon” is a normal popular household firearm — “assault” is a type of criminal behavior, not a kind of hardware. Look up “Politically Corrected Glossary” to understand how language is used against you.

After the invention of gun powder by the Chinese - there has been a struggle for who owns it. Gun powder and the components of most bullets still come from china by the way so that is why there has been a ammo shortage. President Trump pissed off China so …

History

The history of gun control in America started in 1634 when in the first laws in the colonies was to make sure the African, Native American and the Chinese didn’t have access to guns. It kinda continued from there, the Dred Scott case denied Mr. Scott was even human so he therefore had not right to arms.

The first Supreme Court case involving the Second Amendment denied a group of negroes the right to free speech and bear arms while trying to vote. C. 1872

But these days we as a people are throwing around racism, sexism and using fear like its popcorn. Folks are walking on eggshells, avoiding good conversations, not trying, becoming more segregated, separated, irritated and frustrated than any time I have seen before.

After the civil war - black people became republicans. My ancestors were republicans until MLK made the tactical move to change parties. We followed.

After Trump the GOP changed again. Not quite sure where we are as a nation now but history looks like it is repeating itself.

What does all this mean?

It means beloved, friends, family, that if you own a gun, participate in this community you have to get involved. You are the gun lobby. You are those people. It doesn’t matter what you identify as. Pronouns, parties, pistols or revolvers. Rifles or shotguns, jew or gentile, Protestant or Catholic - gay or straight, disciple or atheist

Time for you to step up. Think about it. there is bondage in racism, sexism, and negative thinking. Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.

Politicians are not trying to solve our problems, they are trying to solve their own problems which is getting elected and re-elected

What we can do now is not be stupid. You don’t have to respond to inquires, news reporters, or speak out of school just to keep your face, name, or media presence going. It is too easy to slip, fall, and mess up your face.

And then others in the community will eat you because many are like that. What you can do now, is train, yourself and your groups.

This is my farewell message to friends, family and coworkers in the 2 A

movement. In my twenty plus year of being in this space, I have never seen anyone actually retire. They usually die, get a mention in the NRA Rifleman, and Ammoland and that's it. Or they screw up in a media interview and get crucified by trolls and the community members that like that sort of

thing. I'm trying to go out on my own terms.

The world has changed since I started. A lot. Some good stuff has happened. And some bad. I used to call myself the Bill Cosby of the Gun Rights Movement. That isn't a good analogy now. And there were a couple of other guys that I grew up looking up to that have since gone down in flames.

Like my wife repeatedly say, don't compare yourself to anyone, just be you.

I started with nothing. I still have most of that left.

I started in 1986 wanted to be a firearms instructor for my community. I wanted to become a high paid speaker or radio personality. I wanted to leverage my creativity and entrepreneurism to become a successful business

person. I became the Black Man with a Gun (BMWAG)

The local DC Maryland and Virginia community wasn't ready for an under 30 year old African American firearms trainer. The government allowed me to moonlight and do this side activity but with a strict warning not to disclose my bona fides. I was watched. I was monitored. I had to ask permission before I traveled. When I appeared before the public they thought, how could I know anything? How dare I talk about guns when there

was the so called black on black crime, police shootings, and drug wars going on. I got beat up a lot at ranges, gun shops and churches where I tried to advertise. But I became involved in the gun community/ gun rights when I failed to make money as a trainer/instructor in 1987. Gun rights activism doesn't make money if you are honest.

Since then I have been involved in the gun debate, as it intersects firearms instruction and civil rights. I created the Tenth Cavalry Gun Club in 1991 that grew from Washington, DC, Baltimore, NJ and Illinois. The Law Enforcement Alliance of America, introduced me the show business of politics and I worked with to the NRA, GOA and SAF. The website Black Man with a Gun

debuted in 1999. I've been involved in US Supreme Court cases we have won for the 2nd Amendment even if my name isn't on it.

I learned more about myself than anything doing this stuff I had a training business, where I provided instruction and certifications in first aid, armed security and tactics. I failed in business but I pressed onward.

I started before social media and looking back I could have been a boss with that thing but I didn't.

I reached out to all the so called black leaders and announced my intentions

in the gun world. It was risky because historically, this same leaders are

anti-gun. But I went there. I tried to buy a shooting range. I got

blasted by Rev Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, and local pastors.

I created a podcast in 2007 and I was embraced by the people black people

said I should beware of. The demographic that loved the BMWAG were the same

folks that are accused of racism, cronyism, and supremacy. White males were

calling me brother. They were listening to my shows. They were inviting me

and my family to events across the country. I shot historical firearms in

Tennessee. I ate at the homes of millionaires, in country clubs, and places

in Washington DC I didn't know black people were allowed in. I learned that

our country likes being divisive. I learned that racism exist mostly

because people need it as an excuse. I learned that organizations really

don't want change. I learned that people like mess, and drama. I learned

that I was a conservative.

What I enjoyed

I loved meeting people like you. I loved shooting exotic and new firearms.

I loved championing the cause of freedom. I loved being the Black Man with

a Gun. I loved mixing faith and firearms. I loved being the pastor of

patriots, pistoleros and paladins. I loved writing but podcasting was my

jam. I loved and hoped that one day I would make enough money to quit my

day job. That didn't happen by the way. I learned that my faith has

sustained me. I learned that my unique position has saved lives.

But it has had its bad side too. I've spent too much money learning, and

chasing influencers. I filed bankruptcy along this journey. I'm ok now but

I learned a lot by my mistakes. My wisdom came at a price. I almost lost

my wife on this journey. I almost got kicked out of two churches from being

pro-gun. I lost positions, promotions and opportunities at my old

government job because of my pro-gun activities. It came at a cost.

1. Civil rights award from the NRA for bringing the Eddie Eagle program

to Washington DC in a big way.

2. St Gabriel Possenti award from the Gun Dean, John Synder at the

Second Amendment Foundation

3. Creating the tenth cavalry gun Club and getting the club to shoot at

the NRA range when it was brand new

4. Meeting Charlton Heston and getting Christmas cards from him for a

few years

5. Being the chaplain of the LEAA

6. Being a part of the concealed carry reforms across the US

7. Testifying in VA, TX, MI, WI and SC legislative houses

8. Interviewing the Gunny, Lee Ermey, Wayne LaPierre, befriending a

rabbi like Dovid and connecting with my Jewish brethren

9. Speaking in front of 20K in Albany NY

10. Meeting Donald Trump and getting a selfie in NY

11. Publishing two three books related to the my journey and the 2nd

amendment

12. Creating a website in 1999 and trademarking the name bmwag

13. Being mentioned in a movie, pros and Cons.

14. Getting a chance to audition for a pilot show on Spike TV

15. Podcasting for 12 years, 630+ episodes, sharing American history,

and introducing new generations to things they may have missed.

16. Working with over 12 industry companies and getting sponsored by

I created a IG post that alerted my friends that I was retiring. It made me

sad even though I am smiling in the picture. How do you retire? I'm making

it up as I go. I have never been here before but I know it is a nice thing

to let folks know of your intentions. Like anyone, I thought about all the

things I did that didn't succeed. I started dwelling on it and had to break

out the ice cream. If you feel bad, eat a little ice cream. I learned that

from my dad. Not too much or you will look like you are always sad.

Why am I leaving?

When I got started in 2000 as the BMWAG, it was tongue in cheek. It was my

version of a shock jock. I did it with all the intentions of being replaced

by many untraditional firearms instructors, activist and clubs. We have

that. I personally know of Spanish speakers, LGBT, African Americans,

disabled vets and boat loads of women involved now. I've been the go to guy

media for law enforcement issues in the black community, religion and guns

and veterans issues as it relates to guns. Most of the time, after a

tragedy. Not good times. There have been almost a steady flow of tragedy to

respond to. If you know the media game, if you sound reasonable, truthful

and not bombastic your contribution will not be used. I think I might get

the reward for the most media nobody but the editor as seen. I'm tired of

that.

It took me awhile to learn the game of hyperbole. On a good day, I can

crank it out like the best of them. But it's not my style. Over the years

I have learned that I am not the loudest, nor the most controversial voice

out there. I started focusing on taking care of the second amendment first

responders instead. And I still will. I care about you, your family and

where you are going.

I learned you need a team to succeed. You can be one dude on a mission as

I have been. You have to learn how to delegate. You have to inspire folks

to work for you for nothing until you can pay them. I didn't manage that.

Since 2007, I have been producing digital content. The Lord has allowed me

to create, practice narration, speak and presenting online. I was intimately

involved in the gun debate, US Constitutional issues and social causes. And

with that I am well known among the gray beards. This fight is evergreen.

I believe that this season of my life is ending and that I am to move on to

the next. I want to entertain. Teach and continue doing the needful on the

sidelines. My best work and most of my accomplishments are not online. I

have changed minds. I have saved families. I have helped veterans. I have

been a brother to those in need. I have helped mothers, grandmothers and

children.

So how do you retire on your own terms? I figured my first step was in

letting my friends know of my intentions so it doesn't catch them off guard.

Decrease my expenses. Live modestly. Love unconditionally. Continue to

help my fellowman. I am still pro-gun, pro-rights and pro-life - my life.

If you want to find me, I will still be online, shooting recreationally,

still be singing, playing the blues, riding my motorcycle, preaching the

gospel, smiling and praising my God.

beginning. I thank you for listening, downloading and subscribing to the

podcast. I thank those that reached out when they saw my IG or Facebook and

checked on a brother. It wasn't a lot of you but I noticed who you were.

on November 2, 2019, about a hundred gun rights activist from different organizations, channels and locations came together in unity for the US Constitution. The one point they all agreed on was the importance of the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights.

It was a major feat because it was the herding of strong personalities. I was privileged to be in the number chosen to speak that day to a crowd about ten times that number on the grounds of the US Capitol's west lawn.

There were 26 or so speakers that spoke but even more that didn't but were equally important in our constant struggle to keep America free. Craig Deluz is an awesome speaker. I got a chance to catch him before he got started here. Also was the meeting of Dave Smith, a competitive shooter with the Parkinsons' Disease that learned he can manage this struggle by continuing to shoot.

I've been involved in gun rights activism since 1991 and continue to be inspired by great people like these.
