  • Melba Tolliver, Accidental Anchorwoman - Mar 15,20112011/03/15
Melba Tolliver knows a thing or two about African-American firsts. She was the first black person ever to anchor a network news program. The year was Marchl of 1967, and the news staff at ABC network was on strike. Network executives drafted Melba as the replacement on the Marlene Sanders show News With The Womans Touch. That was just the beginning of a long list of firsts for Melba Tolliver. It was also the beginning a illustrious career in broadcast journalism. Four years after her career launch as the accidental anchorwoman, Melba was assigned to cover the White House Rose Garden Wedding of Tricia Nixon. However, when she showed up in Washington, D.C. with her hair in an Afro instead of her usual straightened style, the brass as WABC temporarily took her off the air. It was time when African Americans were redefining who they were, and Melbas hairdo was another turning point. Never one to knowingly leave a stone unturned or an opportunity on the table, thats Melba's voice you hear on Gimme Me Shelter, the Rolling Stones documentary drawing a hilarious response from Mick Jagger when she posed the question, Are you satisfied yet? Melba is writing a memoir from her home on the Delaware River, appropriately titled Accidental Anchorwoman: Choice, Chance, and Change. An honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Molloy College, Long Island, NY; a political reporting award from Lincoln University; a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Association of Black Journalists, the John B. Russwurm Award from the New York City Urban League, the Matrix Award from New York Women in Communications, and a National Endowment of the Humanities Fellowship to the University of Michigan are among her many honors. Pat O'Bryan was a “broke blues guitar player” until back in 2004, he went up to Joe Vitale’s porch, hammered on his front door, and told him “Joe, I just wanna pay my frickin’ bills.” He is now having a blast earning hundreds of thousands of dollars online. He is the author of the two definitive books on Internet Marketing: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Internet Wealth, and Your Portable Empire, How to Make Money Anywhere Doing What You Love. • Clarifying HCR with @Karoli - Mar 30,20102010/03/30
Healthcare Reform. If you are like me sorting out the good from the bad in the current Healthcare bill has been a monumental challenge. Karoli joins Wild Woman Network to help us clarify where we are now with the bill and what we should and could look for in the future. Now that health care access is about to be a reality for everyone after nearly 100 years of effort, the insurance industry has ramped up the noise machine, while many liberals are disappointed in the compromises it took to come to the final vote last week. This battle was only about one issue: pre-existing conditions. Karoli argues for why compromise was necessary, and why winning this battle paves the way for a more perfect system with either a public option or a single-payer floor as the next step. Karoli is a blogger, semi-retired retirement plan consultant and community manager for online communities. She was one of the original team members for CNN Interactive's online community through 2001, spent 8 years with WebMD in their health communities and building their health professional blog network. She currently freelances while blogging passionately about health care reform, politics, and the 'fierce urgency of now'. She blogs at odd time signatures and US Health Crisis in addition to guest posts on Crooks and Liars. She lives in Southern California with her husband, 2 children, but she's really a slave to her pug.

Who is a Wealthy Freelancer? Authors Pete Savage, Ed Gandia and Steve Slaunwhite join me to answer that question. For thousands of freelancers and solo professionals, self-employment is a constant struggle. And then, there are the others … Those thousands of solo professionals who have developed thriving businesses. They don’t think of themselves as “starving artists.” In fact, they’re living proof that you can have it all… a high income, great flexibility and a fulfilling life. It’s not a tradeoff. This is a special hour with a Q & A with you and the authors. Bring your questions to the chat room. Can't make the live call. Send your questions via Twitter @sandrasc

  • Blair Steelman, The Way of the Golfer - Feb 02,20102010/02/02
Blair Steelman weaves an inviting tale that does a magnificent job in answering the question: “what” to do. His work comes from his own powerful search: “All I knew was that I couldn’t continue to live my life feeling the way I did. I had to do something about it. The question was, “what?” "....There is one important point to remember. No writer, sage, guru or teacher can provide more insight into our lives than we can for ourselves when we begin to tap into the limitless resources of our own inner depths. Moreover, life, true, abundant, profoundly fulfilling life, does not begin until we come to this realization and take the steps to awaken to the persons we really are and transform our potential into our reality." Producer and TV interviewer, Phyllis Haynes writes: “Blair Steelman is a gifted thinker and writer. His ideas come from a life lived fully…not from a pristine mountain top.”Blair Steelman has spent a lifetime in leadership positions; first, as a pilot in the Air Force leading crews into combat in Vietnam where he flew more than 100 combat missions, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals; earning a degree in Philosophy from Ohio Dominican College and doing graduate work in Business at Ball State. Blair went on to build a successful career in Sales and Management, and has helped others achieve their dreams and goals through seminars and workshops he has developed.

  • Retta Blaney, Author on Wild Woman Network - Jul 28,20092009/07/28
Retta Blaney, author of Working on the Inside: The Spiritual Life through the Eyes of Actors is a theatre and religion writer in Manhattan. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Newsday, National Catholic Reporter, The Jewish Week, The Living Church, American Theatre, Back Stage, and other publications. Stage and screen actors form unique relationships with their audiences. Through their work, they challenge, teach, and inspire us by shedding light in all corners of life and connecting with us through our senses and emotions. Working on the Inside goes backstage into the inner lives of respected actors like Liam Neeson, Vanessa Williams, Phylicia Rashad, Edward Herrmann, Kristin Chenoweth and many others to reveal the deep spirituality each one relies on in their lives and work. The result is a book like no other that draws ten key elements of the universal spiritual life from the perspective of actors whose work it is to tap into the essence of life, tell stories, and reveal life's truths. Retta Blaney, an award-winning journalist now specializing in theatre and religion, was inspired to write this book by the spiritual wisdom actors conveyed in their interviews with her over the years. She dared to ask actors questions few ever do--How does your spirituality influence your life and work? How do you pray? What do you pray for? How do you stay centered in a career with so much uncertainty? And they answered her, readily sharing experiences of faith, being in the moment, listening, silence, prayer, self-knowledge, community, hospitality, ritual and transformation. The result is a book that takes readers into the private thoughts of some of their favorite actors for inspiring tips on how they, too, can begin working on the inside. http://www.uponthesacredstage.blogspot.com

You can listen via the Internet or by phone. The number is (347) 202-0660 to listen in. The show is also downloadable on ITunes.
MAR 24, 2009. BELOVED BEST-SELLER CELEBRATES 30 YEARS IN PRINT WITH A VERY UNUSUAL PARTY.

To celebrate the special 30th year edition of her book. WISHCRAFT , Barbara Sher decided to use Twitter as it's never been used before. At 8PM on Tuesday, Mar 24, Sher finished leading a 24-hour networking party on Twitter. Thousands of fans from all over the world joined her to help anyone and everyone achieve their dreams, find jobs, begin new careers, start their own businesses.

Barbara Sher is a NYTimes bestselling author who's been on major shows (Oprah, The Today Show, etc.) with many of her books. The first one, WISHCRAFT, which has never been out of print since it was first published in 1989, is celebrating the publication of its 30th anniversary today, Mar 24, 2009.

Nothing was for sale at the Twitter party; even WISHCRAFT wasn't mentioned during this world-wide brainstorming, just people calling in their wishes and obstacles -- some needed a job, some wanted to turn their passions into income-producing careers, some wanted to move to Australia -- the dreams were as varied as the people who sent their 140-character messages via Twitter. And they got answers.

Dreams were launched. The pace was amazing. And the use of Twitter was brand new. Sher turned it from casual greetings between friends to a huge networking machine focused on finding solutions for everyone who asked.

And what happened was astonishing. One woman said, "I can't catch my breath! I'll call you Monday!" to someone who directed her to a contact in her town. You can see some of this on Twitter by searching #ideaparty. You can find the wishes and obstacles by searching #W/O and you can find some of the solutions if you search Dream Launched!!

(And the Twitter Idea Party continues every Thursday from noon to midnight at #ideaparty.)

All this to celebrate WISHCRAFT, in which Sher introduced the world to her early version of Idea Parties -- 'brainstorming/barn-raising' and has been rewarded by sales topping a million copies in a dozen countries around the world.

You can find out everything you need to know at the special website Sher set up for this new edition and 30th anniversary celebration. It's worth looking at: www.barbarasherwishcraft.com

At the blog at www.barbarasherwishcraft.com you'll find some amazing stories sent in by WISHCRAFT readers.

You'll read a letter handed to her at a workshop from a man who hadn't had $6 to attend a performance of a symphony at Lincoln Center - and 8 years later was not only the manager of the orchestra, he'd had 3 of his original compositions performed by by it. WISHCRAFT inspired him to offer to usher at the performance when he was too broke to buy a ticket.

You'll read the letter from a woman who said she was "always too old" to become a dancer believing over and over again that she had missed her chance to study ballet, who became a ballerina at age 42 after reading WISHCRAFT.

Then there's the day Barbara held the first copy of WISHCRAFT in her hands. Dazed and overwhelmed, she carried the book with her to a bench in Central Park just to look at it, and almost was mugged by a group of boys -- until they misread the title and ran away!

A special evening mini-course. Creating Your Life Story.

David Mathison joins me April 7 @ 2 PM to discuss how creative vagabonds, thinkers and innovators can build a platform & keep more of their revenues.

He is a media consultant, speaker, author, publisher, and hi-tech entrepreneur. He is an internationally recognized media expert with more than 20 years experience in content distribution. Some of the world's largest - and smallest - publishers use his solutions to directly connect with massive audiences for maximum exposure. His legacy provides global citizens with free news, financial data, audio and video information on the web's most popular sites.

BE THE MEDIA is an extension of Mathison's award-winning work in eliminating inefficiencies in publishing, providing all participants with more egalitarian, democratic and open systems. The book is the result of a decentralized, collaborative effort by some of today's leading media activists, educators and experts. BE THE MEDIA offers solid, practical and proven techniques that show artists how to inexpensively create and widely distribute their content.
