  • Syncing bookmarks now that Xmarks is shutting down2010/09/29

Xmarks has been my tool-of-choice for backing-up and synchronizing my browser booksmarks for a couple of years now, mainly because it had plug-ins for Chrome and for Firefox - the two that I use then most. It ensured that no matter which browser I was using on any machine, all my links were the same. But it seems that they will be shutting down this service (at least their "free" service) on January 10, 2011. From their notice:
Sadly, Xmarks will be shutting down our free browser synchronization service on January 10, 2011. This page contains details on how to transition to recommended alternative services. For more detail on why we're closing our doors, please see our blog post . So what are the alternatives they recommend?

Firefox is the browser that I use the most so this solution is the most important to me. There's a few options for Firefox, but I'm going with Firefox Sync . If for no other reason than its from Mozilla.

Chrome is my second choice and I use this one mainly for accessing Google applications on the web. Initially I tried their built-in sync which is suppose to store the links within my Google account. At the time (and now I suppose) this seems like the best solution for Chrome but the sync didn't work well and I ended up with duplications often. I guess I'll be trying it out again.

I only use Internet Explorer for accessing sites internal to my corporate clients, so I have never been worried about syncing these bookmarks. With IE9 coming out, than might change however. So with no real opinion on this one I'd guess that Microsoft's own solution is probably the easiest and most seamless to use.

And then there is Safari, whose best solution is probably Apple's MobileMe , at $99/year. Granted, MobileMe does a lot more than syncing bookmarks. But that's all I need it for so its not worth then money to me.

But the big question is: what is the best tool available now to keep all of these in sync with each other?

  • Starcraft II goes 3D2010/09/21

Blizzard released the 1.1.0 patch to Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty today and among the updates is support for 3D gameplay via NVIDIA's 3D Vision system. I've never thought that I'd buy a 3D TV, and 3D movies don't do much for me. But Starcraft? Hell ya!

    And then I read what's needed .

  • Customer Service and Social Networks2010/09/18

A note to all the customer service representatives that search and scan and set alerts for their company on Twitter, Facebook, et al: don’t try to fix my problem. If I’ve posted to one of these sites, its not because I need help but rather because I’ve given up trying to get it.

I know that you think you’re only trying to help, or performing a service, and that’s swell. But the simple fact is, my dad will only ever call your support number and my wife does not give a crap about social networks. If your company cannot address the issues of “normal” customers through their normal support channels then no amount of “Hi! Let me see if I can help.” @ messages is going to make a difference.

I realize that you think its all hip and cool to be represented on Twitter. And I’m sure you spent quite a bit of money with some Social Media Expert to confirm this. But its not. Its annoying.

  • World’s Most Cramped Airline Seat to Launch Next Week | Gadget Lab2010/09/17

As you can see, part of the passenger’s weight is taken on their legs, and the legs are tucked under the seat in front. Just how close are the seats? Aviointeriors says that the seat-pitch is just 23-inches. Seat-pitch is the distance between the same point on two seats, and the smallest seat-pitch on economy-class flights is around 31-inches. Even low-cost carrier Southwest has a pitch of 32-33 inches on its planes.

  • Google Voice is now open to the public2010/06/24
Google Voice is now open to the public - no invitation needed.

  • Skype Caller ID and Google Voice2010/05/21
I'm not sure when it took effect, but you can now assign your Google Voice Caller ID to your Skype account so that your outgoing Skype calls show your Google Voice number. I tried to do this months ago, but it requires Skype to send a text message to the desired number, and Skype at that time was unable to send text messages to GV numbers.

This has been resolved. And setting it up is super-simple:

    1. go to the "Caller ID" section of your account

    2. click "Change Number" and enter your GV phone number

    3. you should receive a text message with a code (this took about 10 seconds for me)

    4. enter this code back into the Skype page

    5. wait 24 hours for the change to take effect

Now the people you call won't get confused by Skype's default caller ID.

  • Blogger Template Designer2010/03/26
Google has launched their Template Designer as part of the Blogger in Draft system (sort of their "Labs" for Blogger). Essentially it adds a bit more customization and templates to Blogger for those of us that are CSS-challenged. Read more about it here , or watch the video below.

  • "Podcast Ready" in Wikipedia2010/03/21
Okay, so I'm not mentioned, but the company I founded - Podcast Ready, Inc. - is. It's discussed in the Podcast entry with regards to the trademark, where its mentioned that of all the companies that filed for "podcast" related marks, Podcast Ready was the only to receive one.

Of course a trademark is only as good as the bank account backing it. And when someone like Apple wants to claim a "common law right to all things 'pod'" it takes a boatload of cash to prove them wrong.
