Well I've been quiet for some time, can't think of a better moment to dust off the blog...

  • "night falls" Video Premiere!!2010/10/05
Back in June, my friend cannon released "vine street". On that fine album I think my favorite song is probably "night falls", and I couldn't get it out of my head. My brain would story-board this time & continuity-themed message each time I heard it. So I created a music video for it and cannon & I are launching it today. Enjoy!BTW you can get the album "vine street" here absolutely FREE in

  • Guided By Voices2010/10/02
I discovered Guided By Voices' "Bee Thousand" in 1995. Been a fan ever since. Not long after I met Chris Cannon and he introduced me to a ton of additional GBV material, but I never saw them live. Just this past Thursday their Classic Lineup Tour kicked off right here in Dallas, TX. My friend Mark Pittman (who I also know through Cannon) had an extra ticket and he didn't have to ask twice.

  • Lucas re-releasing Star Wars in 3D in 20122010/09/28
I have a bad feeling about this

  • Nice Cans2010/09/02
Talkin' headphones today. For recording I have some Sennheiser HD280s, closed-cans which do a fantastic job. But they really aren't all that great for mixing or just listening to music. So I started looking around...I'm not a millionaire so that leaves out Grado PS1000s, Edition 8s, or Sennheiser HD800s. So it came down to the HD650s and Beyerdynamic DT880 Pros. Pictured at right is what I

  • Mac Mail & Exchange 2010 users2010/09/02
Wow, it's been forever since I posted anything remotely related to my IT job. But here you go. Issue: Microsoft retired the "WebDAV" prot from Exchange 2010. What it breaks: when you move your corporate Mac Entourage users to Exchange 2010, they can no longer access mail.Fix: Buy Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, coming out in a couple months.Workaround until the fix comes: Mac users can use OWA

  • Out Of Indiana2010/08/18
Later this month my friend Joe Gilder, who runs the awesome blog Home Studio Corner, is releasing his new solo album called "Out Of Indiana". You can get a pre-release sampler here, or go on over to Noisetrade.com where it was #1 album and is still rocking the landing page. Pretty cool considering it ain't out just yet. I enjoyed early listenings of the tracks when Joe generously allowed this

  • Outside my Window @ work - Good Guys workin'2010/07/12
Spied this TV-shoot beneath my office recently...Watched them stage a couple of stunts in between work breaks, '81 Trans-Am taking off with tire-screeching echoing through uptown. Nice diversion from the workday grind.TV show is called "The Good Guys" and it basically re-casts Dallas as LA....except this time the show openly says it's IN Dallas...which is kinda nice since they're shooting here.

  • The state of handwriting on the iPad2010/06/26
Yeah my penmanship isn't quite the best - but I started taking notes this week on the iPad and learned a few things. For example, zero iPad apps can do OCR with handwriting yet, but the one I'm using can e-mail contents to Evernote...which can then OCR your text (but you have to be an Evernote subscriber, and it's not 100% accurate -- like anything else using OCR).The guy who wrote this

  • vine street by Cannon2010/08/18
Wow. One of my best friends, Chris Cannon, just finished up a new solo album: "vine street". It sounds just crazy-good to me, a great addition to my summer jams playlist. You can get can it absolutely free from here.If you're familiar with the local dfw indie music scene, you may know Cannon as one-half of "Gentlemen Losers" (the north TX band, not the Finnish similarly-named guys who came

  • Speaking of Apple stuff...2010/06/07
Apparently today Steve Jobs is speechin' about new stuff coming from Apple. Like everybody else in the industry, I'll be reading up later today on what's coming down the pikeIf it's like last summer, and the summer before that, a new iPhone generation is surely on tap. Since Gizmodo bought a stolen one and all, it may be we know everything there is to know. Still, I have a feeling Jobs will

  • Gone Mac...2010/06/07
Used to swear I would never own one of those damn overpriced Macintoshes...Even though everyone I knew who worked in graphics or marketing used a Mac.Even when my first wife preferred the Mac.Even if half of my creative friends used it, and I always told them they were using expensive yuppie toys. I'm an IT admin & designer of networks, shouldn't I be happy with my Wintel & Linux boxes? Maybe,

  • Blog-check2010/06/02
So I haven't posted in a month, but that's for good reason. I'm writin' songs and learnin' craft and recording pops and glitches which are slowly becoming smooth like buttah...More to come!

  • Ben Gortmaker2010/04/30
This guy has a unique name and interesting story...Nashville's Ben Gortmaker recorded every-single-track on his new album at home, using only 2 microphones and Garageband. No automation or fancy plug-ins here, just Garageband and it's stock EQs (that's right, no Logic or Pro Tools etc). Note: The above statement has FAR more emphasis if you will go to Ben's site & sample a couple of the

  • Interesting....Ohm Studio2010/04/09
Interesting concept, it sounds pretty cool in theory.

  • Glenn Case2010/03/22
Discovered this Youtube daily video cast through a friend on Facebook, linking one of his performances below. Glenn Case is a Tacoma, WA-based indie singer/songwriter and he puts an acoustic cover onto Youtube almost every single day. The covers range from classic-rock to pop and everything else. After each cover Glenn talks for a minute about how he discovered the song or artist, about the

  • Second day of spring pics (aka SNOW)2010/03/21
Got about 4 inches of snow last night here in Dallas/Richardson. I think this is the 3rd time in 2010 we got significant snow, plus the one on Christmas '09.Here are a couple pics of my lawn this morning.

  • Alex Chilton 1950 - 20102010/03/22
I know it's been a month since my last post, and I try to post good news here now and then...but this sad news needs to be posted everywhere. Alex Chilton passed away last night. #1 Record is probably one of the best records I ever owned. Here's a track from that album, plus another below of Alex's best-known pop song.

  • Dallas snow 20102010/02/12
Hanging w/ Stu, the neighborhood park snowman. You just don't get snow like this in Dallas except once every 15 or 20 years.

  • Just outside my office...Woodall Rogers Park2010/02/02
Yay for new spring lunching spots. A couple years away though...

  • It aint about the gear...2010/01/29
...these guys recorded a full-length song last year on an iPhone, in 4-tracks. ...great proof that it isn't "gear" or "studio/engineer-time" that you need to make a great recording, it's just effort and time and a little creative push. Creativity works BEST when resources are limited.

  • If you're wondering why Austin is so cool...2010/01/15
...it's because they would never create a promotional video like this:It's got everything needed to suck: bad edits, a horrible mediocre jingle, and enthusiastic people having no idea they were participating in total absolute suck. Something tells me even Mark Cuban had no idea he was appearing in something that would end up being so very lame. Or worse, maybe he did.More amazing than all of

  • Haiti2010/01/14
Go here if you want to help, or here, or here. Sure, back here in the US, our Great Recession is going strong and many of our own people do need help every day...but Haiti has been in Depression for generations. Over 100,000 people probably died last night in the poorest country on this side of the globe...countless survivors will need help.

  • AA Bondy & Amy Cook @ Lola's Last Night2010/01/15
Decided to be irresponsible & stay out late on a school night and catch AA Bondy and Amy Cook. So my friend Jeff Walton, my better-half, and I all headed to Lola's for the start at 10PM. We got exactly what we expected: an awesome live show and an exhausted drive back to Big-D. It was worth it.Cook opened for Bondy and, even though I came mainly to see his show, it was a real bonus to see her

  • Life is short...2010/01/11
On my very first birthday, my mother was 43 times older than me. This year, she's only 2.2 times older than me.
