A discussion of the topical and controversial issue of Plagiarism. Plagiarism is the 'stealing' of ideas and presenting them as yours. But is it as simple as that? Who knows where this will lead?
  • Judge and (not) Jury 2005/06/28

Rowin Young of Strathclyde University forwarded this from the Forensic Lingusitic list at JISCMAIL. It refers to a US judge from Florida who, being accused of plagiarism, has turned tell-tale and pointed the finger at many others. As a federal judge, a certain degree of professional integrity is implied, so having been accused of lifting 10 pages of the work of another, and then authenticating it as his own is potentially a serious breech. This does raise again the issue of the criminal, rather than the crime. Who has done it and when is sometimes more important than what.

  • Great Minds part 2 2005/06/28

Well, I was on leave last week and did not see the THES for June 17th 2005. Sure enough, Phil Baty, acerbic champion of the plagiarism story, has published a piece on the Aberdeen/Glamorgan cross-over. I am quoted in the piece, from material sent to the JISCMAIL Plagiarism list, but only in part. A full version is available by subscribing to the list or you can read my previous blog entry . Phil didn't find the Toronto provenance for the piece, because there was no mention of this in the article. Their 175th anniversary was 2002/3 which I believe was at about the same time as Glamorgan's campaign, so this must be another example of coincidence. There were, however, some rather excellent clichés for other universities. What was rather nice was the fact that no-one lost out here. Both Glamorgan and Aberdeen gained some much needed publicity for free.
