In the middle of yet another rolling and expanding pet food recall, we will talk a lot about pet food on Animal Wise Radio today. Davyd Smith, co-founder of PeopleFud, a Colorado based dog food company, and Margaret Gates, founder of Feline-Nutrition.org. Each started down their respective paths of researching nutrition for their own pets, and each had an awakening. Many packaged pet foods are actually at the root of chronic disease.

Both Davyd and Margaret have done something with this knowledge. Margaret shares a truckload of feline articles and resources online, and Davyd and his co-founder are, also educating pet owners and producing quality foods for dogs in a human grade food plant.

Davyd will also talk about No-Kill Colorado efforts in encouraging local shelters and rescues to join up for JUST ONE DAY.

Mike and Beth cover the ongoing story of Minneapolis Animal Care and Control - and how they resist reforms and support even from their closest allies.

With evidence proving that there are several key programs required to make our way to no-kill, why do some still point to spay/neuter as the primary focus?

We will also consider, with holistic vet Dr. Richard Pitcairn, how clever marketing and best intentions often lead us, without justification, to over medicate our pets. With combo flea, tick and parasite drugs widely available and on the rise, are drug companies supporting our pets' best health or their own profits?
  • Animal Wise Radio from April 15, 20122012/04/15

Upon her owners passing, plans laid for Jimmy to go to Animal Ark went sadly awry as she was killed by Woodbury's animal impound contractor, Animal Humane Society, before her impound period expired. There is no end to the doublespeak and no end to the twists in this tale. Newly released AHS documents shed light into why they killed Jimmie and why they and representatives from the City of Woodbury have been lying about it.

Please join in this end of year celebration.

  • Nathan Winograd UNLEASHED from December 11, 20112011/12/11

We discuss the seminal court case of Medlen vs. Strickland which held that an animal control shelter that "mistakenly" killed a family's dog must pay for sentimental damages. • Nathan Winograd UNLEASHED from December 4, 20112011/12/04

We discuss the blank check some people are willing to give the large national groups arguing that because "they do so much good," we should not criticize them even when they do terrible, life-ending things too. In the case of PETA, that means seek out and kill 2,000 animals a year, in the case of HSUS, it means defend abusive shelters and defeat legislation which would have ended the cruel gas chamber, and in the case of the ASPCA, it means work to allow 25,000 animals a year to be needlessly killed.

We need all hands, hearts and voices to come on board for change!
  • Animal Wise Radio from November 13, 20112011/11/13

In recent weeks, a dizzying amount of significant animal welfare news has unfolded. Michael Mountain of Zoe Nature, will weigh in on the outing of the ASPCAs attack on no-kill advocates.

Also joining us, Atty. Marshall Tanick of Mansfield, Tanick and Cohen, will talk about resolution in the North St.... Paul feral cat colony debacle. Why did a good samaritan have to go to court? And what legal outcomes are rippling out from the court decision?

Nathan Winograd has updates and observations about no-kill news from across the country. Don't miss it!
  • Nathan Winograd UNLEASHED from November 13, 20112011/11/13

Two years ago, Ed Sayres, the ASPCA's hard-hearted, small-minded President, ordered Oreo, an abused dog, killed. A law to prevent that from ever happening again in a NY shelter was also killed by Sayres. Since that time, the number of animals killed in NY shelters who rescued groups were willing to save has exceeded 35,000. Lined up side-by-side, the dead bodies... would form a line 10 miles long. Put another way, they would fill virtually every seat at Fenway Park. The killing of Oreo and lifesaving legislation is not an aberration. And we have to stop pretending that it is. It is part of a larger attack against animal lovers that culminated this past week in the ASPCA's release of a handbook, "Tactics of the Extremist Agenda," to help shelters fight off reformers in order to continue killing.
  • Animal Wise Radio from November 6, 20112011/11/06

Her research has been used as to support eradication as the solution for free roaming cats. We'll also celebrate some great work and no-kill success with Ellen Jefferson of Austin Pets Alive. One year after its release, we'll revisit the film "Troubled Waters." Brian Devore of the Land Stewardship Project helps us look back to see what has changed since this powerful film about the impact of large scale farming on Mississippi River waters. Nathan Winograd of the No Kill Advocacy Center joins us to share some thoughts about why some organizations persist in rebranding and recycling failed programs.
  • Nathan Winograd UNLEASHED from November 6, 20112011/11/06

And recently, a listener of Animal Wise Radio responded with questions: How can we be a nation of animal lovers in the face of 8 million animals entering "shelters" every year? In the face of half of those animals being put to death? In the face of animal neglect and cruelty? We'll tackle them today on Nathan Winograd UNLEASHED.
