After astonishing the crowd at the Virgin Music Festival in Toronto last September, The Editors came back to the city to headline their own tour and do it again at The Kool Haus. This time around they dragged along two opening bands to their entourage, namely Louis XIV and Canada's own Hot Hot Heat. Suffice it to say, the openers did not provide any anticipation or create any type of energistic synergy that openers are supposed to do. Instead, Louis XIV gave a mediocre performance and Hot Hot Heat had technical difficulties, which sucked the life energy out of the house. These bands were so unimpressive that it caused some of the crowd to leave. Unfortunately for those who left, they missed another stellar performance by the headlining band.

The short and sweet of it: what the Velvet Underground Scene must have felt like. Going to see indie rock bands break out of the well-known music mold in one of the few remaining dingy rock clubs is what concert hopping is all about.

The Montreal duo of the Handsome Furs came to Toronto with a fervor few have seen in today's music scene. With nothing but a guitar and a drum machine housing all of their collected music from their debut album, "Plague Park", Dan Boeckner and wife Alexei Perry graced the stage of Toronto's dance/concert club Lee's Palace to unleash their last concert of the year in a city most Montrealers consider enemy territory. Ironically, in the words of Boeckner, Toronto gives them the warmest welcome and the most energy.

I lived the ferry ride out of Day 1 to live to tell about Day 2 of the Virgin Music Festival.

Day 2 was the day most everyone was attending due to the expected arrival of The Smashing Pumpkins. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as blissful as the day before, but at least it didn't rain and pour like the ominous clouds made it out to be. Although their was huge expectations from the Pumpkins, there was a plethora of other great bands that were to grace thes stages of the day. Today was the day for a lot of Canadian music such as Tokyo Police Club, Justin Nozuka, Stars, Metric; the possibilities were endless. So much music so little time.

The expectations were high upon the arrival of the Virgin Music Festival to Toronto. This was the second year the Festival pulled into the city and The list of bands read like a menu at a fine dining restaurant. The first day promised excellent shows from the likes of: k-os, Arctic Monkeys, The Most Serene Republic, Matt Costa, Interpol, Bjork,etc. The bar was set high and a weekend of good tunage was well looked forward to by all.
