- Merging of iPod and Desktop RSS Feeds2006/02/10
I merged the iPod and Desktop feeds today so now there is a single public ScreenCastsOnline feed in the iTMS. I tested it once I made the change and all appeared fine.
Since then I've had two reports that some of the older screencasts have downloaded again. Although it's only two people affected, that's two too many.
Since there are over 40 screencasts in the feed I've taken the decision to remove the older screencasts from the feed to prevent any spurious downloads or at least to minimise them.
All the older episodes are on the WebSite so people can get them from there. I'll make a separate one-off feed that people can use to get the older episodes or they can get the DVD if needed.
My main concern is not to inconvenience current subscribers!
If you've had double downloads - please accept my apologies and hopefully I'll have something extra for you that will take the pain away in the next few days ;-)
Stay subscribed!

A run down of three different apps to encode your video clips into iPod format.
I also include some tips on managing your clips within iTunes and announce details of a new competition coming up in the next few weeks
As of this episode I've decided to make the HiDef version (720p) of this and future screencasts available to ScreenCastsOnline contributors only. This will be done via a special RSS feed, details of which can be found on the ScreenCastsOnline forum in the contributors only section. As usual, the desktop and iPod versions will still be available for free download.
So if you want to get this and future screencasts in glorious high definition, just click on the monthly donation button in the sidebar and signup for a $2 per month subscription! This will also give you access to other premium content available now and planned for the future
If you want to see an example of a screencast in HiDef, just go to the SCO0023 - RapidWeaver part 1 episode on click on the "HiDef Version" Button at the bottom of the post to download the HiDef version of that episode for free. Note - You may want to right or cntrl click and save the file to your computer to view locally although you can stream it just by clicking the button. - SCO0023 - Rapidweaver Part 12005/11/29
This episode features Rapidweaver by Realmac Software.
Rapidweaver is a fantastic website creation tool that allows you to create and publish professionally themed websites with no programming whatsoever. This first part gives you a walkthrough of the basic functionality of Rapidweaver and future episodes will cover the more advanced features.
Update - Rapidweaver Part 2 now available
Be sure to watch this through to the end where you'll be given details of an exclusive offer for ScreenCastsOnline and MacTV viewers - 15% off the online price for Rapidweaver (offer on up to 31/01/2006). Also, by using the special ScreenCastsOnline discount code, you are also supporting ScreenCastsOnline
Not only is the content special for this screencast but I'm pleased to announce some changes to the formatting of the screencasts.
For the first time, ScreenCastsOnline screencasts will be available in three different formats:
Hi Definition 720p
This is a version in glorious HiDef at 1280 x 720 resolution and is available for download by right clicking (or CNTRL clicking) on the HiDef button below. Save the file to your computer and view in Quicktime player. This file will not be included in the regular feed due to its size. I may create a separate RSS feed for HiDef content for ScreenCastsOnline contributors.
Optimised for Desktop
This is the normal version of the episode which is included in the Desktop RSS feed (960 x 540).
Optimised for iPod
This is a separate episode that has been encoded and edited for optimal viewing on the iPod 5G and is included in the iPod RSS feed. New! An additional feature of the iPod edition is that it now has "zooms" that will display the normal desktop and then will zoom into menus or dialogue boxes so that you can actually read what is on the screen when viewing on your iPod. It's a lot more work but I think the results are worth it!

- ScreenCastsOnline - DVD Archive Vol 12005/11/23
Following on from several viewer suggestions I've created the first edition of the ScreenCastsOnline Data DVD Archive!
This is a data DVD containing all the currently available ScreenCasts in both Desktop and iPod format.
The DVD also contains a mini website that allows you to play the screencasts directly from the DVD by clicking mini icons. I'll also include some of the trial versions of the software covered by the screencasts.
Hopefully, this DVD will be a help to those SCO viewers on Dial Up but also those new viewers who want to get the complete SCO archive without having to download each show. Regular viewers may also want a copy as a permanent record of the shows.
Rather than just bang out a standard DVD-R, I'll be presenting the DVD in a keepcase with a full colour printed label and also will print a full colour SCO label on the face of the DVD so it could even make a great Xmas present for friends and relatives!
The cost of this special data DVD will be $20 (USD) and will include worldwide postage and packing.
Payment can be made by PayPal and I've included a "Buy DVD Vol 1" button in the sidebar to place your order or click on the button below:
Update - Existing ScreenCastsOnline Contributors can get the DVD at a special reduced price of $15 USD - Check out the Contributors section of the ScreenCastsOnline Forum for details.
Delivery should take approximately two weeks.

Update for iPod Users - Previous versions of the screencasts have been reformatted to play on the iPod by rescaling the resolution from 960x600 to 320x240. This has resulted in files that will play on the iPod but can be diificult to view as the whole screen is compressed into the small iPod screen.
For this edition I've done an experiment which has resulted in the iPod file being slightly larger than usual! This is because the file contains two complete copies of the screencast. The first is the standard screencast compressed to fit onto the iPod and the second is the exact same version but "zoomed" into the screen to try and follow the action.
This should make the screencast much more readable but does mean there are sections where there is a lot of screens whizzing about! This is just an experiment so excuse the jerkiness in places!
I'd be grateful for some feedback as to which version you prefer and have set up a poll on the SCO forum to allow you to vote and to add any comments. Please vote on the poll here:

- iPod Edition - Update2005/10/19
Well the new iPods are hitting the streets!
Thanks to Loren Finkelstien who was kind enough to try out the new iPod edition of ScreenCastsOnline! The bad
news is that the re-encoded versions of the ScreenCastsOnline episodes didn't work.....Doh!
It now transpires that although the episodes were encoded using Apples published specification, there is something thats not quite right. The files were all encoded in H264 at 320x240 with AAC audio all within spec. They were saved as .mov files which again was in spec.
On investigation, Loren has discovered that another Video Podcast (Rocketboom) does work as a .mov on the iPod
but that is encoded using MPEG-4!
As I don't have an new iPod to do further tests, I've got no option but to re-encode all the iPod versions using the new QT preset which unfortunately will produce larger file sizes. I'll re-encode over the next 24 hours and will need to reset the iTunes feed.
If you have already subscribed to the iPod edition feed, I would suggest unsubscribing from the iPod edition feed and
deleting the existing .mov files from your iTunes library(not the desktop edition - they are fine). Leave it for a few hours and then re-subscribe to the iPod edition in iTunes again and you'll get the re-encoded files. They will all be labeled [iPod Edition OK] at the end of each itle.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Me puts on a pot of coffee for an all nighter :-)

By popular demand an overview on how a typical Screencast is designed, recorded, edited and published. This screencast covers the basic workflow in creating an episode of ScreenCastsOnline and gives you a flavour of the various stages and tools used in the production process.
This should explain why I can't publish more than two episodes per week!

- Contributors Page Now Live!2005/10/11
I have set up a separate page to acknowledge all those people are kind enough to support ScreenCastsOnline via a voluntary contribution. The page will list those people and will also include links to their blogs or websites.
The page can be accessed by clicking on the "Contributors" button in the side bar
In view of the appalling events in Pakistan, all monthly contributions to SCO made this month will be donated to the relief efforts via one of the main charity organisations
I have decided that I will produce some exclusive content for contributors as aknowledgement of their support and generosity. This will probably take the form of one or two special shows a month. I've got some cool stuff on p2p applications and Usenet newsgroups that probably wouldn't be appropriate for distrbution via iTunes, so this would be ideal for contributors only!
Please rest assured that there will always be free content on SCO so I've no intention to moving this over to a subscription based service!
Contributions are purely voluntary!
PS - The next episode on macTV should be out tomorrow and this week it's about Spotlight. I'll post it on the SCO site on Friday.
PPS - Looks like there's a lot of support for the behind the scenes look at how a SCO episode is put together. I'll look at getting this recorded and posted in the next week.

- New Donation Buttons2005/10/05
I've been getting some fantastic feedback following the recent ScreenCasts and it looks like they really are providing a useful service for a lot of people!
In fact, they've been so well received that several people have asked if there was a way to contribute to the upkeep of the show to show their appreciation for the help that SCO has given them. Cool!
After some deliberation, I've created a couple of buttons to allow people to do just that!
The basic philosophy of SCO remains the same in that we will continue to provide free content to anyone who wants to access it. Any contributions are purely voluntary but totally appreciated.
I thought I'd adopt the Leo Laporte model (!) and set up two buttons on the ScreenCastsOnline website - Check out the side bar for the actual buttons:
This lets you contribute an ad-hoc amount any time you want via PayPal. If there's a screencast that you have found particularly useful or if you just want to send something my way then this is the best option!
This button will take you through the simple process of setting up a $2 per month contribution via PayPal. I'm currently pushing out approx 8 x 15-20 minute shows per month so that equates to 25c per show!
This would be my preferred option as it will help guide me as to how well the shows are doing. It's a bit of an experiment in quasi-micropayments.
For those people kind enough to contribute, I'll be looking at ways of providing some additional content or perhaps early access to shows. If I ever go over to a more formal subscription based service (you never know where this all might lead but there will always be free content), rest assured - all you early supporters will get special treatment!
Privacy Policy - Just as a final note
Please be assured that any personal details passed to me via PayPal (e.g. email addresses) will never be passed on to anyone else - period.
I will maintain a list of contributors and may occasionally send you emails but they will only be in connection with ScreenCastsOnline and I promise I won't send you unsolicited adverts, etc.

- Music in ScreenCasts - Decision2005/09/26
It's decided!
Thanks for all the feedback via email. The general concensus is the screencasts are better without the background music as some people do find it distracting.
So from now on, the regular screencasts will be music free (except for the intro and outro of course!)
If you have any other suggestions on improvements to the screencasts pleas email me at screencastsonline@gmail.com or leave a comment on the website.

- No Votes at Podcast Alley2005/09/20
How embarrassing!
I registered with Podcast Alley over a month ago and forgot to tell anyone about it!. Been too busy making screencasts.
Consequently, I have 0 comments, 0 monthly votes, 0 overall votes and a monthly rank of 3529 :-)
Do me a favour and make a vote for me at Podcast Alley each month. I've included a new button in the Subscribe section of the sidebar so it will only take a few seconds.
Here's a Link if you're getting this via RSS
I feel that subscriptions to SCO are starting to plateau a bit so need to have a bit of a push "getting the message out" so Podcast Alley will help.
I'll try and make a few more promos to get played on a few podcasts.
Any one else got any good ideas?

- How do I do it!2005/09/10
Thanks for all the notes of encouragement sent to me via email. It takes a lot of effort to plan, setup, record, edit and publish the screencasts so it's great to hear people are really enjoying them and finding them useful.
A recurring theme is people asking what asking what software I use to create the screencasts.
I'm gradually experimenting with different techniques of editing and encoding but the core capture software is Snapz Pro X 2.0.2 from Ambrosia software. It's a really great package. I don't think Ambrosia do a referral scheme but if you can let them know I sent you, perhaps I'll get a free upgrade to the next release!.
For basic assembling and editing I've been using QuickTime Pro but I'm experimenting with Final Cut Pro to add a bit more polish!
So once again, keep subscribing and please spread the word to friends, family and colleagues about ScreenCastsOnline. There's some really cool stuff in the pipeline!

- Hurricane Katrina2005/09/05
Following the horrendous events surrounding the devastation of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast I've hosted a Red Cross banner on the site, together with a PayPal donation button to support the FCC co-ordinating Tech aid for the Katrina disaster (see sidebar)
The FCC and FEMA is in a desperate need to reestablish communications in the disaster area. More specifically, the metropolitan area of New Orleans and it's surrounding areas. What can Wireless access internet service providers do to help? We can reestablish internal communications and provide connectivity to all disaster relief efforts by installing point to point, point to multipoint links, IP Web cams to assist the police and fire departments who can not be everywhere in such a large area, VoIP phones to provide voice communications to relief personnel in remote areas and many other types of normal everyday communications that most people take for granted.
I've removed the PayPal buttons for donations to ScreenCastsOnline out of respect to the people affected by this terrible event.
Although, New Orleans seems a long way from the UK, I've had the pleasure to visit a couple of times on business and it has always struck me as a truly unique place. The images of the Superdome and the downtown area bring back lots of good memories for me, and it's hard to grasp the plight of the poor people struggling to survive in the Convention Center where I've spent many hours.
I hope this can be resolved quickly, but I know it can't. Please help out.
- Wow! Postion 99 in the top 100 iTunes podcasts2005/09/02
Sorry but couldn't let this go without comment. From a standing start two weeks ago to position 99 in the iTunes Top 100 subscribed podcasts!!!!
I must admit, I'm speechless and a little shaken!
Thanks ever so much to all those that have subscribed and I hope you stay subscribed for the duration. I've got lots more ideas for screencasts, it's just finding the time to record and produce them!
Please let me know how I'm doing either by leaving comments of the web site or emailing me at ScreenCastsOnline@gmail.com.
On second thoughts, leave any good comments on the web site for all to see and send any bad comments to me via email :-)
I'm hoping to do some more beginner type stuff so please let your family and friends know about the site, or anyone who would appreciate a bit of coaching in some of the latest stuff to hit the mac and the web. I'll try and include some more technical stuff as well so I keep any ubergeeks happy, along with web based stuff that's cross platform for any Windows subscribers.
So anyway, thanks again for the support and messages up to now. I dare say the ranking in iTunes may drop off but it was great to get into the top 100!

New Movie Chapter Feature
A new feature introduced with this screencast is the introduction of movie chapters to allow you to jump to a specific place in the movie. The chapters are only available if you subscribe and view the movie in iTunes or copy the movie from the direct link below to your pc or mac. They won't work if you stream the movie directly from the link below but you'll still be able to view the movie without chapters.
In iTunes, play the movie in a separate window and the chapter menu will appear as shown below.
Click on the menu and keep the mouse button depressed to select the required chapter and then release the mouse button.
Another hint is to change the size of the separate move window in iTunes to best fit your display. CTRL-Click or right button click on the title bar of the separate window and you'll get a menu as below. Normal size is normally best as this is the resolution the screencast was recorded in.
