Celebrity Interview:

We're proud to welcome performing and recording innovator Todd Rundgren. The most excellent Slau (his podcast: SessionsWithSlau.com ) joins me for this interview.

Hailed in the early stage of his career as a new pop-wunderkind, supported by the certified gold solo double LP Something/Anything? in 1972, Rundgren's career has produced a diverse range of recordings as solo artist, and during the seventies and eighties with the band Utopia . He has also been extremely active as a producer and engineer on the recorded work of other musicians.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Rundgren produced big-selling albums, including Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf, We're an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, and Skylarking by XTC. In the 1980s and 1990s his interest in video and computers led to Rundgren's "Time Heals" being the eighth video played on MTV, and "Change Myself" was generated on commercially available Amiga Computers.

His best-known songs include "Hello It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations, and "Bang the Drum All Day" featured in many sports arenas, commercials, and movie trailers.

Ryan Jackson, Assistant Professor of Music/Technology at Minnesota State University Moorhead, gets his new pair of Fat Head II ribbon mics.

5-time Emmy Award-winning post mixer John Davidson returns with a great primer on understanding compression.

He's currently mixing for PBS , National Geographic HD , The Discovery Channel , and many others. He recently did the 5.1 mix for the King Tut Exhibit , which is traveling the world. John is an expert in surround sound mixing, including Pro-Logic , 5.1 and Dolby E .

He also has a vast background in live mixing working with national acts like Dave Matthews , Alison Kraus , Marty Stuart and a host of others.

Over the past several years he's served as a Chief Panel Judge on Audio Mixing/Sound Design and Music Composition for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences , as well as being a Panel Judge for the ITS Monitor Awards .

This week Mike is relaxing in Cabo and Slau is sitting in as guest host. Slau is a New York City-based singer/songwriter and producer. During his teenage years, he developed his performance skills as a multi-instrumentalist while performing with various folk ensembles and dance bands. His reputation as a versatile musician led to an early career as a session musician for television scores as well as commercial jingles and underscores.

Slau's songwriting has been recognized by Musician Magazine where he was a semi-finalist in the Best Unsigned Band Contest and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Songwriters Workshop . He's been a featured performer at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Showcase and has been a regular contributor to the New York City Songwriters Circle and The Bitter End .

In 2005, the new media world of podcasting rallied behind one of Slau's tunes entitled If Every Day Were Christmas , a song co-written with Orlando Pagan . Former MTV VJ, Adam Curry , heard the song, played it on his podcast, The Daily Source Code and came up with the idea of a We Are the World -type benefit. Over 50 artists from 9 countries took part in Podsafe for Peace , a benefit song for UNICEF produced by Slau . It remains in the Top 10 most played songs in the podcasting world and has been played on satellite and terrestrial radio including Sirius, XM, BBC, CBC and Westwood One .

Currently, Slau is working on a follow up to The Weight of Words , his 2001 debut album. The new album is scheduled for release in the spring of 2008.

It narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures.

Slau - "There’s a known problem with the Edirol R-09 that might potentially affect listeners who own the machine. I was listening to Jim Fidler’s podcast, Republic of Avalon Radio , where, during his walk with his wife, he started talking about this problem where the side of the unit starts to come loose and buckle. It seems like a minor nuisance at first but it becomes a major problem if not fixed. I experienced the same thing and was surprised to find out that a lot of people are starting to see this.

"Jim had one of the first units ever shipped and I followed suit about a week later. So, now that we’ve seen this effect, I bet more and more people will start to notice this. Thing is, our units are out of warranty but those people who see this now and bought their units a few months after us can still have it fixed under warranty. BTW, another issue that people have seen is that the back plate switches come loose very easily and just move freely without any effect. That was a problem that happened to both of us and is also a known issue. Edirol hasn’t done any recall or anything but I think they should. They’re replacing warranty units with a different polymer these days. Anyway, maybe this will help some folks. Jim Fidler talks about it in one of his recent episodes ."

Our Friend Marc Sorger:

Hello everyone, this is Big Al. This week I lost a good friend of mine in a senseless auto accident twenty miles north of Spokane, Washington. His name was Marc Sorger , He was 56.

Marc was a real renaissance man of the music business; someone that did everything well. And a true Unsung Hero. He was one the best all-around musicians / studio cats I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with. He was a vibrant and dynamic live performer as well as a gifted engineer and mixer.

He was also one of the few golden ears I've ever known. I swear he could spot a problem that was plus or minus 2 db at 18k . . . over the telephone.

As a performer (sax and vocals) he was so fun to watch. He lived and loved his music. His vocal range was stunning and he could do total justice to screaming rock and roll or a tender jazz ballad.

He had the kind of voice that made most people feel like just giving up their singing when they heard him. For some reason, it just made me want to be better. I studied him for hours and it was an education beyond monetary value.

He performed and wrote with The Dillards , The Righteous Brothers , Gino Vanelli , Michael McDonald , Dean and Carol Parks , Linda Ronstadt , Tom Wopat , Greg Topper , The Spirits Of Rhythm , Safe Sax and a host of others.

He also helped to design and build several studios, including Walter Brecker's place over in Hawaii a few years ago.

I had so many good times with Marc in the studio. We usually spent the whole session trying to recover from laughter. I remember one time we were working on some foley late at night and we were like two kids playing in their favorite sandbox together. It was pure joy and magic. That's the way it was always meant to be in the studio as far as I'm concerned.

I can't begin to fathom that we'll never work together again. I miss him so much it hurts.

My condolences to Marc's whole family, his daughters (Rachell, Natalie and Sabrina), his friends and his long-time musical partners in the group Safe Sax , John Lowry and Tera Wolfe-Brasch.

There will be an event in Marc's Honor at Ella's Supper Club in downtown Spokane on November 4th, 2007.

Here's what Robert told us about the background of this track, "I wrote, conducted, played synth, and sang this with the University of California San Diego Jazz Ensemble in the early 1980s, and the concert was recorded in stereo on a 15 IPS reel to reel. I’ve since overdubbed the vocals and added synthesizer reinforcement with Reason in Pro Tools. I’m not happy with the muddiness. I have the tape track going through a Waves denoise plugin to get rid of the hiss. Any suggestions?"

Following weeks of intense speculation by fans and the news media, it's been announced that the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin — Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones — would play a concert in London on Nov. 26. Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham, who died in 1980, will fill in for his father on drums.

The show, at the O2 arena, will be a tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, the Atlantic Records founder who died in December. The bill is also set to include Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini, a 20-year-old Scottish heartthrob who was the last act Mr. Ertegun took under his wing.

We recently featured a news item about the sad and untimely death of Brad Delp of the band Boston . Michael Masse wrote us about this and a tribute he's produced. Michael writes, "I wanted to share with you a recording I recently completed as a tribute to Brad Delp, the lead singer of Boston who passed away recently. When I heard the circumstances surrounding his death, a suicide, it broke my heart. That someone who brought millions of people so much joy could feel so sad and alone—there’s no thought more tragic to a fellow musician and fan.

"One of my favorite Boston songs has always been A Man I’ll Never Be from Don’t Look Back . That song hits home for me even more now. It expresses a feeling of inadequacy that I think we all can relate to at some point, and I expect that song gave Brad some comfort, too.

"Here’s my humble rendition—it’s sort of an acoustic arrangement. I could never do Brad's voice justice, but I wanted to record it to mark his passing. I performed all the vocals and music, and recorded and mixed it in my home project studio. The chain was a Neumann TLM49 into a Pacifica pre amp then through my RME Fireface 800 into Cubase 4 ."

One of the interesting things in the movie is where he plays the original multitrack master from the Layla session and he solos Dunae’s slide and the piano. Q: What was the first classical album to go platinum, and who was the artist?

A: Switched-On Bach by Wendy Carlos (then Walter Carlos) was the first classical album to go platinum in 1968. Her Bach transcriptions for the Moog synthesizer brought electronic sounds into the mainstream. She's been credited with starting the synth revolution. Before this album, synths were mainly perceived as educational tools and not part of mainstream music. She painstakingly performed Bach using a MOOG modular and an Ampex 8 track tape recorder.

Remember, the MOOG modular did not have any presets, was monophonic and you had to use patch chords to manually connect components to come up with a new sound. The album came out and rocked the music industry. It�s fascinating to think a Bach album started it all.

Dan recently published an article, Why Don't My Recordings Sound Pro? , and in it he concentrated mostly on the idea that the road to getting a "pro sound" had more to do with making a good working arrangement, and less about needing a $3,000.00 microphone. He also pointed out that it was important that we sometimes try to see the forest for the trees by de-emphasizing "the gear" that we all lust after. Because, in the end, the gear doesn't make the music.

This week we sat down for a conversation with Latin Grammy Award-winning engineer, mixer and producer Charles Dye , who began his engineering career in 1992. Since that time he has mixed hits for Ricky Martin , Sammy Hagar , Julio Iglesias , and Jon Bon Jovi , as well as recorded artists such as Aerosmith , Hanson , Jennifer Lopez , Shakira and Gloria Estefan , among many others.

Since then, Charles has become a bit of a pioneer in the area of mixing records on Pro Tools, evidenced by his mix of Livin' La Vida Loca , as Dan Daley said in Mix Magazine, "a milestone of technology: the first Number One record to be done completely within a hard disk system. In addition to changing the course of mainstream pop music, 'La Vida' may also turn out to be a pivot point in how records are made. "

Charles's further commitment to Pro Tools and mixing on it was demonstrated by his two-time Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated engineering and mixing of five additional songs on Ricky Martin's album, including two additional singles Shake Your Bon Bon and Private Emotion.

In 2001 he was awarded a Latin Grammy for Best Engineered Album for Thalia's Arrasando , and he worked with Pro Tools on that project as well. As a veteran Pro Tools user he has recorded, mixed and produced almost every record he's worked on in the last several years completely on the system, and though he may use an analog or digital large-format console from time to time, you'll always find his Pro Tools nearby for the sounds and techniques he's become known for.

And most importantly, he's a good friend of PSN and all of our loyal listeners.

Answer To Last Week's Trivia Question:

Q: Are You Lonesome Tonight? was a big 1960 hit for Elvis Presley. But he wasn't the first one to record it. It was first recorded all the way back in 1926. Who was the artist?

A: It was written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926 as a vaudeville recitation and first recorded by Al Jolson.

Brian Stephens over at The Music Pro Show found some alternate research that suggests the answer might have been Ned Jakobs on May 17, 1927. It was difficult to find a definitive answer for either one, so we would have accepted either answer. No one but Brian submitted a correct answer and he generously offered to pass the prize on to the next winner.

Brian also sent along a little trivia about our trivia. Elvis' version of "Lonesome" was recorded during a late night session, about 3-4 AM, at the request of Colonel Parker. His wife apparently loved the song so much that he wanted the "Big E" to do a version, assuring Elvis it would be a hit again.

A: Here's the progression and the history. In 1987 the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany began research code-named EUREKA project EU147, Digital Audio Broadcasting. In April 1989 Fraunhofer received a German patent for MP3. In 1992 Fraunhofer's audio coding algorithm was integrated into the MPEG-1 standard. On November 26, 1996 a United States patent was issued for MP3.

Q: What was the first record to sell a million copies?

A: There were a lot of really good guesses, but none that went back in time quite far enough. There may have been some confusion as noted by Tony Butterworth over at the Home Made Hit Show . His answer was Perry Como's Catch A Falling Star , which the RIAA's own web site says was the first Gold single that was...and here's the important part...."officially" certified by the RIAA, which was founded in 1952.

The original "gold record" awards were presented to artists by their own record companies to publicize the achievement of 1,000,000 sales. The first of these was awarded by RCA to Glenn Miller in February 1942, celebrating 1.2 million sales of Chattanooga Choo Choo .

The 78-rpm commercial version of the song was recorded on May 7, 1941 for RCA Victor's Bluebird label and became the first to be certified a gold disc on February 10, 1942. The transcription of this award ceremony can be heard on the first of three volumes of RCA's "Legendary Performer" compilations released by RCA in the 1970s.

Tex-Mex 'Bebop Kid' Freddy Fender has passed away at just 69 years old. His hits included Before The Next Teardrop Falls and Wasted Days and Wasted Nights , which rose to No. 1 on the country chart and top 10 on the pop chart that same year, while his songs Secret Love and You'll Lose a Good Thing also hit No. 1 on the country charts.

He won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album in 2002 for La Musica de Baldemar Huerta . He also shared in two Grammys: with the Texas Tornados , which won in 1990 for best Mexican-American performance for Soy de San Luis , and with Los Super Seven in the same category in 1998.

Freddy also appeared in the 1987 motion picture The Milagro Beanfield War ," directed by Robert Redford. In February 1999, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

A: Here's the answer straight from Tony Visconti, the man who came up with the idea.

"I set up three microphones. We only had two or three tracks left, and I needed one of these for backing vocals. I couldn’t even bounce down, and so we’d snookered ourselves.

"Therefore, even though I would have ideally loved to put each mic on a separate track – enabling us to capture the whole room when he sang loud, and just that one mic right in front of his face when he sang quietly – I put gates on mics two and three. Mic number one was in front of him with fairly heavy compression, because I knew beforehand that he was really going to shout, and it all went down to one track. This was recording by the seat of your pants, and Bowie was thrilled with the idea that I wanted to do something unique. He thrives on anything that’s different and someone else hasn’t thought of yet, and I just thought ‘Let’s do this live,’ because he’s a great singer and he could always sing it again if I made a mistake. That’s the luxury of working with him: he’s consistently good when he sings. He’s in tune, he’s passionate, and he delivers an arena-type performance every time.

"Mic number one was a valve U47, and with the other two on gates I made sure that number two, an 87 placed about 15 feet away from him, would go on at a certain level, while the third mic, another 87 that was all the way at the other end of the room, didn’t open up until he really sang loud. That reverb on his voice is therefore the room itself, none of it is artificial, and it’s his voice triggering the gates. What is really great is that the sound of the opening two verses is really intimate. It doesn’t sound like a big room yet, it sounds like somebody just singing about a foot away from your ear. The whole idea worked, and what you hear on the record is probably take three."

Billy Preston
First, on a sad note, Billy Preston is dead at the age of 60.

He began playing piano while sitting on his mother's lap at age three. He collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including The Beatles, Sam Cooke, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric Clapton, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, George Harrison, The Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones . He was the only person to receive a credit on a Beatles single, playing the electric piano on Get Back as part of the rooftop concert. Here are some other quick facts:

Billy Preston was the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 1975.
He recorded the song With You I'm Born Again with Syreeta Wright as Billy Preston and Syreeta , which reached #2 in the UK in 1979.
Miles Davis titled a song Billy Preston in his honor.

A request for help from Aaron Griffith of Death 101 Records . His friend is using Fruity Loops Studio (the latest version). Amplitube 1.0 worked fine, but he's getting all sorts of errors. He also tried it with Cakewalk Home Studio and it won't work there either. Have anyone heard of any issues with Amplitube 2.0 not working in this context? Write in and let us know!

Since that time he's mixed hits for Ricky Martin, Sammy Hagar, Julio Iglesias , and Jon Bon Jovi . He's also recorded artists such as Aerosmith, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Gloria Estefan , among many others. This is Part #2 of 4 in our special series, The 30 Days Of Dye .

Here's Charles' setting for the Waves RenComp that closely mimics the buss compressor on an SSL console:

Set to Electro mode
Character to Smooth
ARC off
Ratio = 2:1
Attack = 15
Release = approx. 250-300 (set about to 8th note)

With most of the music he's been mixing lately, 4 dB of compression at the loudest point in the song has been sounding really good.

Charles comments, "I should also say that this is in no way considered mastering compression. Compression across the stereo bus while mixing is done all the time on most of the records you own. Whether inserted at the beginning or towards the end it's been a pretty standard technique for decades done by engineers all over the globe. If you need anymore proof, I have three letters: S - S - L."
