The Pet Doctor - Episode 317 What Are The Different Life Stages Of Cats?
2021/07/27
Info (Show/Hide)
We are all familiar with the life stages of cats…kittens – frenzied bundles of fur and fun and rare medical problems, adult – sometimes playful, usually sleeps a lot and no health issues. And then we have our seniors – sleep, more sleep, eat, poop and sleep some more. Health concerns tend to erupt overnight without warning. But on closer examination, the life stages for our felines are much more complex and with a healthy dose of proactive veterinary care your cat can live a longer health filled life and you can have reduced veterinary bills.
My guest is Dr. Jessica Quimby. She is board certified in small animal internal medicine and completed a PhD studying feline chronic kidney disease (CKD). She is currently an associate professor at the Ohio State University. Her research includes improving supportive care and quality of life in cats with CKD. Dr. Quimby has received the International Renal Interest Society Award and an AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Research Award.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 316 Decoding What is Going On Between a Kitten’s Ears
2021/06/14
Info (Show/Hide)
Were you one of those folks that resisted getting a pandemic pet? Thought there was enough craziness in this world and adding a pet to the mixture was more than you could handle? But recently you have been toying with the idea of having a baby in the house? Dog…might take too much time and not sure if you have the room. Cat…you’ve had them in the past, they are pretty easy…litter box, food, water, occasional trip to the vet. Yeah, easy peasy. Maybe not.
My guest is Dr. Ellen Lindell. As a board certified veterinary behaviorist, she is a firm believer that when a pet owner understands how kittens grow physically, mentally and emotionally, you greatly increase the chance that they will thrive, behavioral issues can be minimized and the bond between human and feline will be strong and nurturing.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 315 Winter Health Myths
2020/12/23
Info (Show/Hide)
Wooohoooo…it is finally winter. Hot sticky weather is behind us. Winter sports and cozy days wrapped in layers of fuzzy warm clothing and snuggling with our pets. And finally an end to having to worry about all those pesky parasites that our veterinarians continue to nag us about…fleas, ticks, internal and external parasites. What a pain in our budgets having to give those preventives. Besides, you haven’t noticed any issues and are beginning to feel as though your vet is just trying to sell you medications you and your pet don’t really need.
My guest is Dr. Craig Prior. He is veterinarian and past president of the Companion Animal Parasite Council and currently serves on their board of directors. We will discuss some of the myths of winter health risks for your pet from inside and outside of the home.

2020/12/15
Info (Show/Hide)
GI issues are one of the most common reasons why pets are presented to veterinarians. Dogs love to eat first and think later…one of the reasons why our canine companions are prone to the heartbreak of diarrhea. Cats however are more prone to becoming constipated.
Occasional slow down of our bowels happens to all of us but chronic constipation can be life threatening. How do you know if your cat is constipated? What can you do to prevent it? How do you treat a cat that is full of it? My guest is Dr. Anthony Carr, Board Certified in Small Animal Internal Medicine and Professor of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

2020/12/02

According the Nationwide Pet Insurance claims data for 2019, the most common reason why dogs were taken to the veterinarians was for allergic dermatitis with ear infections coming in a very close second place. I reality the allergic dermatitis probably led to many of the ear issues.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 312 Inside Outside, You Decide
2020/11/25
Info (Show/Hide)
To let your cat outside or not, that is one of those vexing questions that cat owners wrestle with… the pros and cons are almost limitless. Pros: Envision your cat scampering up trees, stalking butterflies in the tall grass or lazily basking in the sun…what an idyllic life for a cat. Cons: the cat fight on your back fence that results in a deep bite wound and the subsequent deadly Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) infection it contracts, or the encounter with a speeding car as it attempts to cross the street and let’s not forget about the mauling on your own property by a free roaming dog.
Cats love to go outside but we know that there are innumerable dangers just beyond your backdoor, even in your backyard. But is it fair to keep them solely inside? Won’t they get bored, fat, destructive? What can concerned responsible cat owners do to keep their cats and the wildlife that cats are drawn to predate safe?
Dr. Kelly St. Denis is the president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners. She is certified with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in the specialty of feline practice. Dr. St. Denis is proudly one of the 6 Canadian feline specialist members of Cat Healthy Canada.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 311 A Cry for Breath… Feline Asthma
2020/11/12
Info (Show/Hide)
It wakes you up in the middle of the night. That noise…where is it coming from? Did you really even hear it? You strain to listen not wanting to get out of bed…there it is…is it a cough, a gag, your cat hacking up a hair ball? In the morning this feline sleep wrecker seems just fine, eating and purring like normal. But there it is again…the cat looks like it is trying to clear its throat? Should you worry? Is it worth a trip to the vet?
Cats can be a mystery. And like your car, you may get it to the veterinarian’s only to find that it doesn’t make the noise. My guest, Dr. Lynelle Johnson is currently a professor in the Department of Medicine & Epidemiology at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and a clinician in the Internal Medicine Service at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Dr. Johnson's research interests include clinical respiratory disease of dogs and cats and interactions of the heart-respiratory system. She is an expert in feline asthma.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 310 Diversity In Veterinary Medicine
2020/11/03
Info (Show/Hide)
Diversity in veterinary medicine has traditionally been viewed as the inclusion of more women in the profession. The first woman, graduated from McKillip Veterinary College in Chicago in 1903. Very slowly more women entered this field of medicine. 1970-89% of veterinary college enrollment was held by men. 2007, only 37 years later was dubbed ‘the year of the female veterinarian’ with 75 percent of that year’s graduates being women. 2009 was the tipping point for the profession with 55% of the licensed DVMs being female. As of 2017, 80% of all veterinary students were women, and currently 64% of the practicing veterinarians you’ll encounter will be women and 90% of the veterinary nurses are also women.
Improving inclusivity is a major focus of veterinary medicine recruitment and advancement. But the question remains as to how we got to our current status, what is being done to have the profession more closely mirror the general population and why it is important.
My guest is Dr. Tierra Price. She is part of a very elite cadre of veterinarians. Dr. Price is also is one of the 2.1% veterinarians in the United States who are African American. We are going to discuss the challenges in becoming a veterinarian when no one looks like you, how she and the profession are attempting to remedy this disparity and the organization she founded, the Black DVM Network.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 309 When Your Pet Really is a ‘Sweet Pee’…Diabetic Cats and Dogs…
2020/10/19
Info (Show/Hide)
You have likely heard of the medical condition know as diabetes. There are actually 2 forms of this condition, diabetes mellitus and insipidus. The most common type is also known as sugar diabetes. It was first documented in 1552 BC in an Egyptian papyrus. It was diagnosed by the sweet taste of the urine. Glad that we now have more scientific ways to determine if there is sugar in the pee.
According to the CDC, it is estimated that it affects more than 100 million US adults. Veterinary data has shown that 1 in every 300 dogs and 1 in 230 cats will develop diabetes during their lifetime and the prevalence over that past 10 years is increasing. The diagnosis of diabetes in not a death sentence but it is a condition that needs to be controlled and monitored or else dire consequences can ensue.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 308 There’s a Hole in the Bucket
2020/10/10
Info (Show/Hide)
We all have a bucket list. Those things you want to own, see, do, eat, drink, experience before we kick the bucket. What’s on my bucket list? There’s really isn’t anything I want to own but there are so many things I want to see and experience. High on my list is an African safari. The only trophies I want to bring home are memories and photos. But I am afraid that my window for seeing the Africa I envision…. free roaming animals, a delicately balanced eco-system, local populations who have tasted “modern society and advances” but are still practicing traditions that are centuries old.
Sadly, disease, climate change, political upheavals, crushing poverty and lack of opportunities are decimating people, animals and the environment in much of Africa. Can one individual make a difference on the African continent…yes. Can that difference is dramatically amplified if we act together? Most assuredly. My guest, Ralph Waterhouse is an expert in leading safaris to Zambia and is raising awareness of the challenges this corner of paradise is facing. I hope that you can help him in making a difference.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 307 Itchy Scratchy and Stressy
2020/10/05
Info (Show/Hide)
Times of stress I vividly remember was when I was in veterinary school and it was a particularly hard time I was having with classes. I was studying like crazy. My diet was crunchy Cheetos and Diet Coke. Sleep was a luxury I couldn't afford. And I had a horridly itchy rash everywhere. I went to the school's infirmary and was surprised at the diagnosis. My rash was due to stress. So go figure. I pass my classes, got good grades, got some sleep and the rash miraculously disappeared.
My guest today is Dr. Nora Grant, veterinary services manager for Ceva Animal Health. We're going to discuss how stress can make your pet's skin crawl, just like mine did, back in school.

2020/09/25
Info (Show/Hide)
What does an older cat do when it feels good? Sleep. And what does an older cat do when it doesn’t feel good? Sleep. Cats are masters at hiding their signs of illness. As we get older, things start wearing out in our bodies and we awaken to new aches and pains almost daily. But pet parents are often shocked to discover that their cats have an advanced disease. A very common malady is osteoarthritis. It seems to creep into a cat’s life unnoticed. We can’t stop arthritis but there are ways with which we can slow down and process and improve our feline’s quality of life.

How would you know your cat is stressed and what can you do about it?
You might think that I would interview a behaviorist to answer these questions but today I am going to speak to a board certified veterinary nutritionist, Dr. Rebecca Mullis, the Associate Manager of Scientific Affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition and adjunct faculty at Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine.

I have a very good friend who has been the pet parent for 7 Australian shepherds and 2 cats since I have known her. The care and love that she has bestowed on all of them has been touching to observe and it has always been a pleasure to assist her in keeping her kids healthy. When the time came to let each leave her side, I have watched her go through agonizing pain. Each time she has moved forward but the pace has been slower and slower and her pain has become debilitating.
Dr. Liz Fernandez is a certified hospice and palliative care practitioner. Several years ago she wrote a marvelous book, “Sacred Gifts of a Short Life, Uncovering the gifts of our Pets End of Life Journeys”. My aim as a veterinarian is to keep you, animals and the world we share healthy and thriving. The novel corona virus pandemic has brought into sharp focus the delicate balance of keeping zoonotic diseases controlled. Zoonotic diseases are those that are shared by people and animals. And one of the most common worldwide zoonotic diseases is one that you probably never heard of. ‘Stay-cations’ are likely going to be the norm for most Americans this summer. Getting outside with your dog, playing in streams and other waterways is the perfect way to cool off and get some exercise. It is also the perfect way to be exposed to a vaccine preventable, potentially fatal disease, leptospirosis. My guest is Dr. Emilio DeBess.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 299 Clearing the Purple Haze Around Medical Marijuana, CBD and Our Pets
2020/03/27
Info (Show/Hide)
Marijuana and it’s non-tripy cousin, CBD are touted to treat everything from pain, stress disorders, glaucoma, cancer, eating disorders and a plethora of other conditions. Though medical marijuana is currently legal in 23 states it is still deemed illegal by the Federal Government leading to a paucity of scientific research. The purple haze swirling around this lack of knowledge is blinding. Just discussing the use of medical marijuana and CBD is illegal in 49 states. California is only one where veterinarians can least have an open discussion with pet owners.
Yes, marijuana and CBD are natural. You can find them in everything from toothpaste and tea, ointments and cookies, candy and tinctures but that doesn’t make these products inherently safe. What other nefarious substances may be lurking in these products. Then there is the problem of trying to determine which product is best for a particular problem? How much should you give?
My guest is Dr. Robert Silver is one of the foremost authorities on the topic of medical marijuana and CBD in our pets. Dr Silver is a 1982 graduate of Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, with a Masters in Cardiopulmonary physiology also from CSU. Dr Silver helped to found, and is Chief medical Officer of RxVitamins, an exclusive veterinary nutraceutical company, for the past 25 years. Dr Silver is also the author of the peer-reviewed article in Animals.com The Endocannabinoid System of Animals. Dr Silver has authored textbook chapters on veterinary cannabis, and published his classic: Medical Marijuana and Your Pet. The Pet Doctor - Episode 297 Summer Camp for Would Be Dr. Doolittles
2020/03/12
Info (Show/Hide)
I was a pretty sickly kid. At 3 ½ years of age my appendix ruptured and the doctors didn’t figure it out for 14 days. I spent a lot of time around physicians and found medicine fascinating. But it wasn’t until I was in college that I changed my major from pre-med to pre-vet. I realized that rather than just taking care of males and females, adults and kids and variations on the theme, I could be a veterinarian. I would be able to care for a zoo full of creatures. I could be a pediatrician to gerontologist, behaviorist to surgeon and get kisses from puppies with sour milk breath…what could be better?
You might know of a tween or teen who has already made up their mind that veterinary medicine is the career path for them. Getting exposure to all the vet med can be is extremely helpful in the journey of dream to reality. But where can these youngsters get that experience?
Dr. Chris Carpenter, the founder of Vet Set Go is helping kids in 6th to 8th grade discover the myriad of opportunities that veterinary medicine encompasses. Besides books, communities and blogs, Vet Set Go is providing scholarships to 3 lucky kids so they can attend the upcoming week long Auburn Junior Veterinary Camp. 2020/03/04
Info (Show/Hide)
Daily news reports warn us of the impact that our carbon foot print is having on our planet. We are told to change how we live and what we drive. But could our pets themselves -what and who we feed them contribute to their detrimental environmental pawprint? We pamper our dogs and cats like children and are told by pet food companies that we need to feed them like wolves and bobcats. But is this the best diet for them? Could these ancestral diets be contributing to the rise in obesity in our pets and climate destruction? What can we do for our pets that is easy, safe and nutritious and possibly reverse climate change?
My guest is Dr. Ernie Ward, an internationally recognized veterinarian, author and lecturer from North Carolina with expertise in senior pets, pain management, nutrition and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. He will soon be releasing a book that is sure to be paradigm shifting for all pet parents who are concerned with providing the best possible care for their furry family members and the veterinarians who care for them.

2020/02/17
Info (Show/Hide)
Robert Koch and Louis Pasteur are two scientists whose names may sound vaguely familiar. These two scientists of the 1800 are responsible for saving millions of lives by discovering the connection of bacteria and disease. But not all bacteria are bad. In reality we need a balanced microbial population of bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa and viruses to stay alive. But of the 100 trillion microbes that can be found in and on an animal’s body, only 1% of them can be cultured in a lab. So how do we pinpoint the microbial makeup of disease? How do we eradicate the bad bugs while not disrupting the exquisitely delicate equilibrium of the remaining microbes? And oh yes, how do we not give rise to Super Bugs that defy all of the antibiotics in our arsenal? My guest is Dr. Janina Krumbeck. She is the director of Microbiome Applications at MiDog.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 291 The Shot Felt Round the World
2020/01/11
Info (Show/Hide)
Did you realize that by merely vaccinating your dog or cat you could save the lives of over 55,000 impoverished people, the majority of them being children on an annual basis? That is one person every ten minutes. These deaths come from a wholly preventable disease-canine rabies. Rabies is a viral disease that has been virtually eradicated from our domesticated pets in the United States because of a robust vaccination program but still ravages people, pets and wildlife in many areas globally.
My guest is Dr. Robert Duquette, an Associate Director of Veterinary Professional Services for Merck Animal Health. We are going to discuss how a routine rabies vaccine for your pet can be the lifesaving shot that is felt around the world.

Info (Show/Hide)
What do Overland Park, Kansas, the California cities of San Francisco, Thousand Oaks, Salinas and Oceanside, along with Laredo, Texas, Clarksville, Tennessee, Portland, Oregon Providence, Rhode Island and Jersey City, New Jersey have in common? They share the dubious honor of being named earlier this year, the top 10 cities in the United States with the highest percentage increases in positive heartworm tests in our companion pets.
This mosquito-borne disease can be deadly to cats and dogs. And it's one hundred percent preventable. But what if you don't live in one of these areas? What if your pet is totally indoors? What if you've never seen mosquitoes? Do you still have to worry? My guest today is an expert in veterinary parasitology and has had first-hand experience in the devastating effects that this disease can have on our pets. Dr. Cassan Pulaski has a masters of preventive health and is a doctor of veterinary medicine. She's a member of the Board of the Companion Animal Parasite Council, a post doctorate research and teaching associate at the University of Georgia, and director of the parasitology section of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. She knows what she's talking about. And we'll be chatting with her this week. Tune in!

If you have a pet, most likely you love it a lot. You buy the best food you can afford. You give it lots of treats….in fact if you were to admit it, it is a bit pudgy. Your pet has a toybox full of goodies. It has a plethora of clothes and collars. When you are away at work…and you are away a lot, you have a pet nanny cam so you can look in on it. You visit your vet whenever it is ill … and it hates going there. You try to play with it a couple times a week. All in all, you are a pretty good pet parent. This is all marvelous but are you truly doing all you can?
Most pet parents sincerely care but sometimes they don’t know what they don’t know and that can have detrimental effects on the pet’s quality and quantity of life. Now you can obtain reputable, reliable pet physical and mental health information on any of your devices and much of it is free!

The Pet Doctor - Episode 287 Canine Infectious Disease Complex…Not Your Grandma’s Kennel Cough
2019/10/18
Info (Show/Hide)
We often call our dogs our fur babies. More and more we are shuttling them from play days at doggie day camp or heading to the dog park where they can romp with their friends and get their ya yas out of their systems. They often are treated to time at the spa for a day of beauty and grooming more often than we afford ourselves the same luxury. But even if your dog is a home body and only goes for a spin around the block, it could be exposed to infectious diseases that can lead to nasty respiratory disease symptoms. Maybe you have heard of canine flu on the news. Is it kennel cough or this newfangled condition called canine infectious disease complex (now that name is nothing to cough at). Can you catch it from your dog? What can you do to protect your pet?
To discuss all these questions is Dr. Karen Stasiak. She is the Veterinary Medical Lead for Biologicals with Zoetis Petcare.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 284 The Gentle Farewell… Hospice Care for Pets
2019/08/02
Info (Show/Hide)
I have said goodbye to my mother and father after they were diagnosed with cancer. My parents and family were grateful for the attempts of doctors to extend their lives as long as possible because no one ever wants to say goodbye to someone they love. Sadly, their joie de vivre as a result of treatments and disease progression was severely impacted.
The cultures of veterinary medicine and human medicine diverge greatly when it comes to the matter of a gentle, dignified passing of life. How you deal with this issue with your pet is a very individual decision. My hope with this podcast is for you to know your options… and make decisions that are the most appropriate for you and your pet family member. My guest is a dear friend and colleague, Co-Founder and CEO of Lap of Love along with being a co-host of PetCareTV, Dr. Dani McVety.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 282 The Circle of Life
2019/06/25
Info (Show/Hide)
The Lion King said it best...'it's the circle of life and it moves us all'. We are all interconnected. What happens to a population of bats in Asia can affect the health of people in the Mid West. Medical research that focuses on keeping bees buzzing can insure that you and I can continue to enjoy a handful of nutritious almonds along with our morning glass of orange juice. The death of deer in Maine can be the harbinger of a rise in tick borne diseases in the fluffy toy poodles the suburbs of Tennessee and their owners. With the continuum of health between people, animals and our planet, it would seem as though research dollars would be flowing to organizations and agencies who are investigating zoonotic diseases...those conditions that affect people and animals. You would think so but the sad reality is that the dollars are few and far between.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 280 Chronic Kidney Disease
2019/04/04
Info (Show/Hide)
It didn’t seem significant at the time. You thought it was kinda cute. Your cats would perch on the toilet to get a drink of water. You thought your dog was just being a pain and playing you for a chump by getting you up in the middle of the night to be let out…really, you just wanted to prowl the yard to torment the cat next door? But then your pet just wasn’t looking good. It started to lose weight and condition…maybe some vomiting or diarrhea. But the diagnosis came back kidney failure…what caused it? Was it the food? Can you cure it? How can you prevent it in your other pet?

Is there no way to convince a cat to use one of those cute little scratching posts? You love your cat but really…. your belongings are NOT for their sole pleasure…or are they?

The Pet Doctor - Episode 278 Are Cats Really Evil or Just Psycho?
2019/02/04
Info (Show/Hide)
I must admit that the YouTube videos of cats versus dogs, cats taunting other cats and even tormenting their humans can make me laugh. But it is no laughing matter if it is YOUR cat who is biting you, stalking you, ambushing you when you come around the corner or is blatantly aggressive towards your guests. You’ve rationalized this unsavory behavior to the fact that is is a rescue and must have abused or for being feral, being a Calico, being a long haired….fill in the blank.
Are felines just unbalanced and inherently untrustworthy? Or are we setting them and us for failure because we don’t understand the feline mind? They really aren’t just little dogs.
To help us unravel the ball of yarn that is a cat’s unique psyche is my guest board certified veterinary behaviorist and author, Dr. E’Lise Christensen. When she is not lecturing in the U.S and internationally, you can find her practicing at Behavior Vets of Colorado at Animal Care Center of Castle Pines.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 277 The ‘C’ Word…Are You Hearing It More Often from Your Veterinarian
2019/01/10
Info (Show/Hide)
It seems as though it is happening more often. A pet parent comes to me with their furry kid in tow for a well pet exam. Their pet is feeling great. Eating well, great skin and coat, no coughing, sneezing, vomiting or diarrhea. It may be on the physical exam or routine lab work that I discover that the pet has cancer. It is one of the hardest conversations I can have. They know I must be wrong…how could their healthy pet have a potentially life-threatening disease? I have the impression that I am having this dialog much more often than when I started practice. Is cancer really occurring more often in pets? If it is more common, what may be the cause and is there anything we can do to decrease the chances that your pet will be affected?
My guest is a Dr. Brennan McKenzie, a veterinarian and practitioner of ‘Evidence Based Medicine.’ We will tackle all of these questions and more.

One of the reasons we have pets in our lives is for their companionship. The bond with canines has strengthened over the thousands of years that they have cohabitated with us…from the fringes of our human encampments to now sharing our beds.
But with this bonding some issues have arisen. Call them what you may, my little shadow, super loyal dogs, Velcro dogs…these are pets that may be suffering with separation anxiety. What can you do to prevent it from happening and if your dog is suffering from separation anxiety panic attacks when you are not around, what can be done to relieve the angst?

The Pet Doctor - Episode 274 Neurology Facts and Fiction
2018/10/22
Info (Show/Hide)
The inner workings of our pets’ bodies, like its nervous system, can appear perplexing and frightening when it doesn’t work properly. I like to demystify the body by thinking of it as a collection of commonplace items. The nervous system is like the body’s internal computer…a combination of chemical and communication systems. Information about what is happening inside and outside of the body is detected, the information is transmitted to the main processor-the brain- via phone and electric lines, our nerves. Our ability to survive and thrive depends on these messages being sent in a well-ordered and consistent pattern. These processes can be disrupted by breaks in the lines – injuries, hacked by diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, abnormal chemical reactions or tumors. It is possible that the wiring may never have been properly configured in the first place…congenital or inherited defects.
My guest is an expert in unraveling diseases affecting a pet’s neurological system…repairing the damage when possible or controlling the signs when it is not. Dr. Ali Gorgi is a board-certified veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon who owns Bright Care Veterinary Hospital in Orange County California.

It gave me a much better appreciation for the discomfort our dogs experience when being bitten by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas.

Info (Show/Hide)
Got a pet that itches, bites, scratches, chews, licks or just putz with itself all the time? You swear that it doesn’t have fleas. You have tried lotions, potions, and shampoos. Your veterinarian just gives you pills and pokes your pet with injections of who knows what and the skin issues persist. The answer must be in the diet. At least that is what all the pet parents at the dog park and pet store sales folks are telling you. So does your pet have a food allergy? Is grain and gluten free the answer? Or should you feed organic, holistic, or maybe raw?

Pet owners, be aware all of these rules and regulations refer to people and not pets. You may be wondering why your veterinarian hasn’t discussing this topic with you.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 263 Better Health Through Poobiotics
2018/03/28
Info (Show/Hide)
Your dog or cat having tummy troubles? Poobiotics may be the answer. And no that wasn’t a slip of the tongue, I meant poobiotic and not probiotics. With the intestinal tract being the largest immune system in the body, keeping your dog and cats gut healthy is one of the best ways to keep your pet’s body in top shape. Through a process known as fecal transplantation, poop from a healthy pet is given to one with GI malfunction, helping to reestablish a robust and viat intestinal micro biome.
Dr. Holly Ganz is a microbial ecologist and co-founder/CEO of AnimalBiome, a company that is mapping the DNA of the bacteria in our pet’s gut and producer of the little poop pill for pets.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 261 Genetically Modified Pets
2018/02/01

You may be diametrically opposed to genetically modified food. You would never buy a product that has had its DNA tampered with. You’re concerned that this reportedly bigger, better, larger, hardier food could affect your health in the long term. But do you realize that your pet’s DNA has been modified and many of the diseases we see in our cats and dogs is due to these alterations?
To discuss the top genetic diseases that affect our feline and canine companions is my guest Dr. Jerold Bell, a Clinical Associate Professor of Genetics at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and practices at Freshwater Veterinary Hospital in Enfield, CT.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 258 What We Need for a ‘Bat-ter’ Life
2017/11/30
Info (Show/Hide)
Through the ages, the way we view bats has been tainted by stories like Dracula and Batman. Champions of good or evil blood sucking Transylvanian royalty, in reality, bats serve an essential role in our ecosystem and they need our help. This show, the Pet Doctor, is about pets but I am not advocating that you keep these amazing creatures as companions. My hope is to dispel some of the myths about bats and to better understand their behaviors, biology, and our interdependence. This way we can hopefully both survive the changes that are going on around us.
If you have the chance to visit Monteverde, in the cloud forest of Costa Rica a trip to the research center, the Bat Jungle is a must. I was fortunate to visit this unique attraction and meet today’s guest , biologist and bat expert Vino De Backer.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 257 Crying Out for Help
2017/10/26
Info (Show/Hide)
There is a major epidemic in the United States…people addicted to pain control medications. It can start out innocently enough but then spiral out of control, often with dire consequences. Sadly, I see too many pets with an issue at the other end of the spectrum…in pain but the suffering is not appreciated by their caregivers. Providing your pet with the best quality of life depends on you recognizing when your pet is in pain, understanding the pathways that lead to pain, knowing how to find a veterinarian who is capable of treating your pet and recognizing which treatments are safe and worth pursuing.
Who better to chat with today than Dr. Michael Petty, author of Dr. Petty's Pain Relief for Dogs: The Complete Medical and Integrative Guide to Treating Pain (Countryman Press, February 2016). He is a veterinarian and certified veterinary pain management expert and acupuncturist. He owns Arbor Pointe Veterinary Hospital and the Animal Pain Center in Canton, Michigan.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 256 When to be Rattled if Your Pet is Bitten by a Snake
2017/09/26
Info (Show/Hide)
If you don’t like snakes, you had better move to Alaska, Hawaii or Maine, otherwise no matter where you live in the United States, you are sharing geography with at least one of the 20 venomous snakes that call the U.S. home. You and your pet may encounter one when out for a walk or playing in your backyard. They can even slither into your home unnoticed.
Imagine the scene…suddenly your pet is crying in pain or favoring a body part. Is it because of an insect bite, broken limb or snake bite? What do you do? Can you just ‘wait and see’ or do you need to see your veterinarian and how quickly do you need to get there? Your knowledge and the steps you take can make the difference between discomfort and death.
My guest is Dr. Karl Jandrey. He has seen his share of snake bites as a critical care specialist at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine where he also serves as the Associate Dean for Student Programs.

2017/07/14

I won’t pretend to understand what a dog or cat feels when it goes to the veterinarian or groomer but for some pets visions of space aliens conducting medical experiments and water boarding might be close. The Pet Doctor - Episode 240 Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials
2016/10/27
Info (Show/Hide)
Breakthroughs in veterinary medicine has saved lives and improved countless others. We almost take it for granted that when you or your pet becomes ill, that there will be a safe and effective medication or treatment. But how did these breakthroughs come to be? Were the studies conducted on lab mice or dogs kept in research kennels? Why can’t researchers do all the studies with computers and not use living animals? How were safety and effectiveness measured and what about bias in the response to a treatment? Is it fair to an ailing animal to give them a placebo rather than potentially lifesaving medicine?
My guest is Dr. Eric Wisner, DVM, director for the UC Davis Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials. We will discuss ways your pet can help advance the health of pets afflicted with various conditions as well as assist people with similar maladies.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 239 Ingredients for an Optimal Life
2016/10/13

In the past few decades, dog and cats have moved from the backyard to the bedroom. We celebrate their birthdays, have nanny cams so we can check on them when we are away, include them on our holiday cards and spend more time trying to figuring out what to feed them than we spend on our own dining choices.
If you are like most pet parents, a trip to the pet store can be overwhelming when you gape at the rows upon rows of pet food choices….premium, organic, grain free, free range, holistic, raw, natural…what does it really mean? Should cook your own food? Who do you turn to for credible information…the kid at the pet store, Dr. Google?
So step away from that bag of food, put down that can of pet food and relax for the next ½ hour with your favorite dog or cat by your side for a pet food primer by Dr. Oscar Chavez, Chief Medical Officer at Just Food For Dogs.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 236 Feline Fountain of Youth
2016/08/08
Info (Show/Hide)
Cats are living longer than ever. Why? More of them living indoors, their owners are teaming with veterinarians to address health needs in a more proactive manner along with advances in medical research.
With their increased life span comes aging. Getting old isn’t a disease it is a process and it happens right in front of your eyes, day by day. It seems like yesterday that your cat was a kitten. Now your veterinarian is talking about senior issues. Pet parents try to slow the process by myriad techniques. It is not uncommon for an owner to rave about a new supplement or food that has turned their geriatric feline into a kitten during their cat’s wellness visit. Rather than being ecstatic about their discovery, I am often wary that their cats may be afflicted with a common hormonal condition, hyperthyroidism.
Dr. Hazel Carney, describes herself as “one of the oldest living cat-only doctors left in captivity”. She is also the Chair of the American Association of Feline Practitioners Guidelines Committee.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 234 The Bear Necessities of Protecting Giant Panda
2016/07/12
Info (Show/Hide)
Ever wonder why the giant panda is black and white? As legend goes, long ago when pandas lived n the mountains of Tibet, they were snow white. The bears befriended a group of female shepherdesses who often played with their cubs while they tended their flocks. When a leopard attempted to attack one of the cubs, the women sacrificed themselves, sparing the young bear. The pandas mourned the shepherdesses by following the local custom of wearing black ashes on their arms. In their grief, they cried and rubbed their eyes with ash coated paws, covered their ears to block the sound of their sorrow and hugged each other leaving them with the black and white pattern we see to this day.
Giant pandas are native to China and are considered a national symbol of peace and harmony. Sadly, it is estimated that there may be only 1000 of these bears in the world. When I recently toured China, I was fortunate to visit the Chendu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. My guest today is Dr. Sarah Bexell, the chief director of the Department of Conservation at the Chengdu Research Base. Her focus is keeping mankind from having to wear black ashes on their arms for these marvelous creatures.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 232 Badda Bing, Badda Boom... Noises That Drive Dogs Crazy and What You Can Do
2016/06/20
Info (Show/Hide)
Crash, boom, bang... all noises that may send your dog running for cover under your bed. A dog’s hearing is quite different from ours. They can hear sounds 4 times farther away than we can, hear higher pitches sounds that are undetectable to the human ear and their extremely moveable ears can help them hone in on the origin of the auditory reverberations. We need to move our entire head to better echo locate. Loud noises such as thunder and fireworks can be very scary for your canine companion. A frightened dog can cause itself great bodily harm trying to escape the sonic terrors and great angst for their owners.
Trying to make your dog less noise phobic has typically involved sound desensitization or heavily sedating your dog. Now… there is a breakthrough medication that won’t make the sound any less obnoxious but can allow your dog to better deal with the auditory insult.
Dr. Sharon Campbell is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and one of the technical veterinarians for Zoetis Animal Health. We will be discussing noise aversion and a new medication available to treat it.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 231 Breaking Down Pet Stereotypes and Behaviors
2016/05/25
Info (Show/Hide)
Profiling is the act of predicting behaviors based on a person’s ethnicity, gender or color. The cognizant you would never consider jumping to such irrational conclusions. But it sneaks into our lives on an unconscious level. We do this with not only with people but also with animals. All snakes are scary and dangerous. Pit bulls and Rottweilers are aggressive and shouldn’t be allowed around children. Golden retrievers are hands down the best breed for a family and all calico cats, though they may look cuddly, are actually untrustworthy and one whisker away from coming unglued. Sounds pretty ridiculous when said out loud doesn’t it?
Breaking stereotypes of animal behavior and understanding their actions has been a passion for my guest, veterinarian, Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society. His voice may sound familiar; he co-hosted The Animal House, a nationally distributed weekly program on public radio that explored the latest in animal science, pet health and behavior, and wildlife conservation. He is fluent in cat and dog speak having written three books published by National Geographic, the first called “Everything Dogs,” and two books on animal behavior called “How to Speak Dog” and “How to Speak Cat” with a fourth due out in November 2017 on animal medicine, care and behavior.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 230 The Lost China Tape
2016/05/12
Info (Show/Hide)
Hello!. This is Dr. Bernadine Cruz. I have a confession; I love to travel but tend to misplace my belongings along the way. In October of 2015, I had the opportunity to tour China. I saw marvelous sites of antiquity and treasure. What I enjoyed the most was meeting the people and being a veterinarian, seeing how they interacted with their animals. During my visit, I was fortunate to gain insights into the Chinese human-animal bond by interviewing Ms. Lily Li, the director of Companion Animal Business, Zoetis China. I also had the frustration of misplacing the device I use when I conducted our conversation and had no backup of our meeting. Grrrh. Well happy dance time, I found the device and the lost interview of Shanghai. Ms Li and audience, please accept my apologies for the tardiness of getting this interview on the net. I think you will agree however it was worth the wait. Xièxiè (thank you!)

The Pet Doctor - Episode 229 Touching the Sky
2016/05/02
Info (Show/Hide)
Falconry... what does this word bring to mind? You may envision the European nobility riding through the countryside with a majestic hawk on their outstretched leather enveloped hand. Using hawks and falcons for hunting dates back to ancient times. Few people still hunt with birds but falconry enables these spectacular creatures to enjoy a symbiotic relationship with man. They also serve an important role as sentinels to the health of our planet.
I had the pleasure of visiting with two licensed falconers in San Diego California, at Sky Falconry, where I was privileged to fly a trained bird and for a little while touch the sky through the wings of a Harris hawk.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 228 Passages
2016/04/06
Info (Show/Hide)
The devotion that pets show their human guardians is often called unconditional love. As pet guardians, we share our lives with creatures that sadly have shorter life spans than ours and at times we must demonstrate the ultimate gift of love-allowing our pets to pass. This decision is fraught with angst. How do you know it’s time? Do you permit your pet to transition naturally or do you enable the process? Is it best done at home or at your veterinarian’s office? How do you tell your children? Are you overreacting by feeling so devastated by their loss and are your friends correct when they say "get over it, just go out and get another pet... it was only an animal.'
Dr. Liz Fernandez addresses these questions and more in her book, Sacred Gifts of a Short Life. Each pet is different; each decision regarding their transition is unique. There is no right or wrong answer, only the one that is meaningful for you. Dr. Liz and her remarkable book will help you no matter if you are facing the passage of a pet, a human loved one or your own mortality.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 227 Tweens and Teens Get Set for Veterinary School
2016/02/17
Info (Show/Hide)
At least once a week I have a client tell me that they wanted to become a veterinarian when they were young, but never pursued the career. They just didn’t think they had what it took.
There are so many tweens and teens who are starting to wrestle with the question ‘what do you want to do when you grow up?’ Many may entertain the idea of becoming a doctor of veterinary medicine but they also have doubts about what does it take? Could I handle the sights, sounds and smells of being around animals? What options are available if I like science but want to do more than tend to the traditional dogs, cats, horses and birds? How do I go about get hands on experience?
Dr. Chris Carpenter is the founder and director of an amazing program called ‘Vet Set Go’ that incorporates his degrees in veterinary medicine and his membership in the National Science Teachers Association. It is unique and a great way for tweens and teens to explore all the veterinary medicine can be.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 225 Love Never Strays
2016/01/21
Info (Show/Hide)
Have you ever walked through an animal shelter? It teams with hope... dogs and cats hopeful that you will take them home and love them. Heartbreak because last year an estimated 3 million dogs and cats across the United States found themselves alone, afraid and abandoned in such facilities. Animal shelter have greatly improved in the services they offer these animals but sadly, the majority of these wonderful loving pets will never find a forever home. They are destroyed because no one adopts them. There are just too many of them.
A few months ago, my local veterinary association took part in a ‘Doctors Without Borders’-type pet wellness event sponsored by a spectacular organization founded by my guest, Teri Austin. This woman’s passion for helping some of the least served pets in the Los Angeles area will hopefully inspire you to help her foundation or who knows, you may want to use this model to tackle the same issues in your home town.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 222 Dedicated Passion
2015/11/17
Info (Show/Hide)
According to Webster’s dictionary, passion has several definitions. The more common is ‘a powerful or compelling emotion or feeling such as love or hate’. One less used but sums up a veterinarian’s passion for his or her chosen field is ‘the state of being affected by something external, especially something alien to one’s nature or one’s customary behavior. It has to be passion, why else would a sane human being place themselves in harm’s way from hooves, claws, teeth, beaks, inordinately long days, communicable diseases that can kill, field work and research that can take you away from your family for months at a time and all for benefit of others who rarely say thank you? Why? Because veterinary medicine is one of the most fabulous vocations one could ever be a part of.
My guest is Dr. Joe Kinnarney. He is the 2015-2016 president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. We are going to chat about your passion for your pets and the role veterinarians play insuring the health of people, animals and the world.

2015/06/05
Info (Show/Hide)
It is estimated that Americans bite dogs at the rate of over 7 billion times between Memorial day and Labor Day with the highest concentration being in the month of July. Those statistics may seem alarming and have been compiled by a very reputable organization, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Every year, Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs each and not all of those are eaten at your local Costco.
Though dogs have been deemed to be one of our dearest companions, it has been estimated that dogs will bite man, and woman and too often children 4.5 million times a year. Are they all bad dogs? Were they are mistreated as pup? What do we do to aggravate the situation? My guest is Dr. Jose Arce. The Pet Doctor - Episode 211 Predicting Contagions: Science Fiction or Science Fact
2015/05/11
Info (Show/Hide)
I’m not much for scary movies so when I went to see the 2011 film Contagion starring Gwyneth Paltrow, I didn’t expect to be as terrified as I was. A simple dinner in a far away land lead to a worldwide disease outbreak that makes the 2014 Ebola outbreak look like a mild flu season. It would be comforting to think that it was just a movie, it could never happen in the real life. Sadly, viral diseases that affect our pets, canine influenza, our dinner, Avian Influenza, and our lives, SARS and MERS are too commonly featured on the nightly news.
How can you stop something that is smaller than a bacteria and antibiotics are helpless against? My guest, Dr. Jonna Mazet, Director of the One Health Institute at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine will tell us how veterinarians have partnered with doctors, health workers and hunters to protect the health of all of us.

They have been used for their speed, strength, have been beasts of burden and are hands down fabulous athletes. Caring for them requires a knowledgeable owner teaming with a dedicated veterinarian like my guest Dr. Claudia Sonder, Director of the Center for Equine Health at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 208 Great New Ways to Protect-Watch-Communicate with Your Pets
2015/04/03
Info (Show/Hide)
We treat them like our kids... day care, psychics, designer clothing, all sorts of gizmos, gadgets and toys to keep them happy but are keeping them safe? What are they doing when we aren’t with them? Are they getting into trouble in the house or just miss us? And can we keep them safe from predators even when we are by their sides?
My two guests have developed two amazing products that will help us communicate with our pets and keep them out of the jaws of danger.

The Pet Doctor - Episode 207 Do Veterinarians Have You and Animal Health at Heart?
2015/03/16
Info (Show/Hide)
You recently went to your neighborhood big box store and they were touting the fact that you could purchase your pet’s medications at drastically discounted prices. So why is your veterinarian charging so much for the same item? Are they really concerned about keeping your pet healthy or are they just in it for the money? And why are they always recommending that once or twice a year you bring your pet in for a wellness examination? It looks just fine. And teeth cleaning... give me a break! You have owned pets for years and never had a prophy- animals in the wild... they never get their teeth cleaned!
My guest is Dr. Ted Cohn. He is the current president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. In the next 30 minutes we are going to discuss the cost of caring. We will also investigate how veterinarians attend to the health of animals, people and the environment along with the specialization that has occurred in veterinary medicine over the past several decades.
