DJ Fizz - Electro Funkology
Electro 5.5 Side A now on Mixcrate..
2014/10/25
Info (Show/Hide)
As the title says the Electro 5.5 mix can be found on mixcrate here;
http://www.mixcrate.com/thedjfizz/electro-55-side-a-working-8932036
Listen, like, and comment if you're feeling it, your support is appreciated!
Oh, and the mix isn't available to download (on any site) purely for the
reason that I want to see the plays etc.. I'm gauging interest in this
stuff with a view to doing more of these (or at least finishing Side B), so if that's something you
would like to see (or hear), then be sure to make it known and spread the word! I'm not a mind reader you know! ;)
On a related note, it's been a while since I've really looked at all the options for uploading mixes and it's interesting to see the many options for hosting/streaming; Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Beatport, Youtube and Mixcrate, I'm sure there's more.. I'm still figuring out which one is most effective, although by default I would imagine youtube would be with popular channels hitting millions of views (but not electro related... darn it!), but there is also the issue of draconian DMCA, which I think shouldn't really affect a mix, but even so, a while back I tried to upload the Electro 5.5 mix to Soundcloud and it was refused due to the Beat Street track at the beginning setting off the auto copyright algorithm or whatever it is called, so I didn't even bother with youtube being that it seems they close your account..
Anyway, so far with the mix on Beatport, Mixcrate & Mixcloud, Beatport is the platform that has gotten the most listens by far. Although it's too early to say about Mixcrate as it's just gone up, but looking at that site, it seems that there are some who, I don't want to use the word 'spam', but seem to upload about five or so mixes at a time, thereby pushing all the new mixes into the mixmush, I mean..
A couple of updates..

Info (Show/Hide)
I thought I would post to announce that I've added search functionality to the blog for the playlists. This means that if you remember a couple of tracks being played on a certain show but the thought of trawling through the show posts puts you off, which to be honest has done for me too - there's quite a few, then the handy search will allow you to narrow it down quite substantially.
Also, the Electro 5.5 mix can be found on mixcloud , here:

A Blast from the Past..
2014/10/04
Info (Show/Hide)
Hello again from The DJ Fizz and A Blast from the Past....
Not promising regular updates just yet, but I thought I would share this with everyone who may still be subscribed to new posts or check back here once in a while:
http://mixes.beatport.com/mix/electro-5-5-working-concept/194711
This is side A of a fan/community or to coin a retro-gaming term, homebrew project that was to sort of create an alternate timeline, or put another way, an in-between release in the legendary Street Sounds Electro series, so Electro 5.5 would obviously sit in the time between Electro 5 and Electro 6.
The concept was to be expanded to encompass Electro 1 through till Electro 15 at least although of course Hip Hop was entering into the sample based Golden Era by this time which in many ways could be said to have led to a natural end to the series.
The mix was done circa 2005 which was not too long before Morgan Khan re-established his Street Sounds label with all that followed there. Initial contact was made regarding securing licensing as it was to be legal but it never really went further than that. The full concept was to release it on vinyl, tape & cd, with the possibility of collector's packs etc.. if it looked like there would be a demand for it. A couple of extra Crucials would have been considered too, more in a Crucial 3 megamix style though with 10-12 tracks per side, with a possible best of the entire series mix. Lots of possibilities.
The tracklisting is:
1) Grandmaster Melle Mel - Beat Street
2) Master OC & Krazy Eddie - Masters of the Scratch
3) Man Parrish & Freeze Force Crew - Boogie Down (Bronx)
4) Boogie Boys - Breakdancer
5) Unknown DJ & DJ 3D - Beatronic
It was all laid down via turntables into Tracktion multitrack style, and still wasn't completely final as I wasn't totally happy with the Breakdancer/Beatronic mix, but overall I was quite pleased, and I hope it provides enjoyment for those that listen, it's been a mix that I've gone back to quite often and I hope it succeeds in capturing a portion of the spirit of the series for you as it does for me, that was the intention so if it does I'm happy. It's not really mastered or anything, just some rough levels and eq going on.
Side 2 was never finished barring working out a track order and recording some test mixes, which I still have so it would be possible to still make it some day..
The mixes and track selection were to be true to the period, and also the cuts too, so no triple orbit spearmint crabcake flare fests :), so any cuts were to be solid 80s style (emphasis on style) at most 'up to' the technical standard of the best of the day, which would be Grandmixer D.St. IMHO. The artwork was more meant to capture the feel of the overall series and try to hook each of the three distinct (before the graffitti) design styles of the series.
Big respect to Mastermind; Herbie, Max & Dave et al who turned this series into something legendary with their creative and aspirational mixes that really created something classic, and that still hold up to this day as masterclasses in the art of mixing. And of course to Morgan Khan who made it happen.
Feedback/comments welcome: @thedjfizz

04.14.09 Update
A quick post to mention that I've done a bit of tidying up and all the active links now should point to actual downloads. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, please continue to report dead links to me and I will fix them. I probably will be uploading some earlier shows too as I start to ramp things up a couple of notches.
All the best,
DJ Fizz

And the silence was broken.....
What's up people, it's been long past due for an update. Well, the last thing I said on the most recent show I did back at the end of December 07, and time has literally flown by since then, is that there were some things that I was working on and I hadn't lost interest in the show. This was, and still is all true, but things sometimes just don't work out how you expect them to. I won't go into a long spiele about what has been going on in the background, but a summary is at least no doubt required.
Nothing terrible has happened (much) since then, just things got a bit crazy and priorities had to be laid out and I think it was in the best interest for the show for it to have been put on temporary haitus, my only regret is not making any announcement and leaving a few wondering exactly wtf went on.
Well, we put a deposit down on a new home in November, construction started in March with the new house completed end of June or early July, however the contract stated we had to have sold our house by April. By early in the new year it became apparant that this was going to be an intense period, moreso than I had anticipated, you may have heard how bad the mortgage market is (and yeah, it's typical that this would also be the time we decide to move, but sometimes the needs of a growing family have to take precedence), so I just never had a good opportunity to do a new show and by the end of March all my records were boxed up and put in storage after the house sold (thank God!), we then lived in a temporary place for the three months between houses, the plan was to unpack all my records and continue, which turned out hopelessly optimistic considering the effort taken to pack them up and move them in the first place, three months didn't seem so long to wait after doing that! We moved in, in July, and it's taken a lot longer to build my studio due to renovations required and it's only been in the last week that I've actually got my turntables set back up and my records unpacked.
So, what with everything up in the air, I didn't want to make any promises I couldn't keep, I know how much it sucks to be told "soon, soon, soon" and nothing happen bar coming up with endless excuses, but I can announce now that Electro Funkology will be back sometime in the near future now that I'm up and running again although I can't give an exact date, but it should be 'soon'. ;)
I sincerely apologise for the silence and I hope ya'll can come and rejoin me to pick up from where we left off. Much respect to those who contacted me to see what was up, sorry for being so flakey in responding in a timely manner and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of the suggestion that one of my listeners made, to remaster and post up older shows, before I put my archives in storage, which would have filled the gap rather nicely.
Peace,
Fizz

Stop press: Please note that I'm reuploading this show, I'm currently using Seagull FTP as my client and I've never known a program to act like this, it has truncated some shows in the past but this time it's excelled itself by appending the upload to a previously canceled one, how it did it with the files being named differently only God knows! I'm glad I checked the actual audio, I check to make sure the link is valid of course.. but anyway, my apologies for this, the new file should be up within 45 mins to an hour, and I'll be checking it out again.. Meanwhile, if anyone knows of another free FTP prog for the PC, please let me know, I'm fed up with Seagull FTP!

DJ Fizz checking in, one two..
I should have posted in advance but sometimes I leave it till the last minute just in case I can get a show done, but work has been, well, work, which has stopped me from being able to do last week's show, but everything should be back to normal this week coming up. Looking back I can see that 07 has been the least consistent year so far, which is something I want to rectify, what with the upheaval of being a (newish) dad, and other things, it's been challenging is all I'll say! But never fear, things are progressing and plans are afoot. ;)
The best way to keep up to date is to subscribe of course, this helps by letting you know when the next show is available rather than you checking in, there are many programs that cater for podcasting, a good site is http://www.podcatchermatrix.org/ or alternatively you can use Apple's i-Tunes, for Mac & PC which is definitely worth a look, that mainly goes to PC users as Mac users get it installed with the OS. A good place to start to subscribe is http://www.electrofunkology.org/podcast , you can choose your options from there.
I just want to put a shout out to a few people, John @ oldschoolhiphop.com , the Radio Crew @ www.westcoastpioneers.com , the Electrolab Crew , Cozmo D , all the podcast carriers who help get the show out to people, especially www.podlounge.com , also big up my man lb_ip, TG1980 & jimmysmithson.
I might have some exciting news regarding AD2007 for all the UK and non-travel-shy European heads for next week from the main man Speedyjay, so don't forget to subscribe to Electro Funkology! :)
Oh, and lastly, I have played other people's mixes on my show from time to time, it's not something I feature too regularly, but if you have done a mix that fits the electro funkology format, shoot me an email at electrofunkologyATyahoo.com, and while we're on the subject of email, I will be migrating to a new email address, something like djfizz(AT) electrofunkology.org once I get that all configured correctly, just a heads up.

Post Vacation Blues....
Sorry for the silence, things a bit hectic since I got back from vacation, catching up with stuff and such, I think driving 3,500 miles caught up with me once I got back! I've pulled something in my chest which is quite painful too so I'm waiting to feel a bit better before the next show, although I'm thinking I should have one for Monday, being that I found a bunch of cool records while in San Francisco...
Apologies to all.

Classic Electro Funkology Pt 2!
This one I dug out is from 11.08.03, and was the first show I did after getting back from the UK to see the ill-fated UK Fresh 03 event, I shuffled a planned trip back there to see family to coincide with it and the whole episode was pretty crazy, what with ticket holders being phoned and being asked if they wanted to upgrade to VIP tickets and such.. The legendary Sahara Nights gig took place the night before and was supposed to be the warm up, but that turned into the main event and it was an excellent night, getting to meet a bunch of EE crew, and thanks to Beagle I got to play back to back after I just showed up with some tunes! Morgan Kahn still has my ticket money, if he lets me mix a 'proper' classic Streetsounds Electro I might forget about it ;)
Anyway, enough of the waffle and onto the show....

Oh, and btw, I'm on vacation so no playlist till I get back ok? :)

Podcast only......
There has been question of what this means and I think it's right to expand on this, I done it in Q&A, or FAQ style, this might help, if there are any more questions then feel free to either email me or post a comment response, I will keep it pertaining to the podcast rather than divulge other specifics, I can elaborate on those in a private manner if those who want to know, and who know me, want to contact me.
I'll start out with David Farrell's initial question posted recently and carry on from there, I'll try to keep the responses as brief as possible.. anyone who knows me will know that I tend to waffle on... :)
Hey, so how does your statement of "Electro Funkology will be a podcast only show" affect your appearances on Global Funk Radio, or does it?
Unfortunately, due to irrevocable management differences I've had to cease my affiliation with globalfunkradio.com and new episodes of my show will no longer be carried by them.
So, how does that affect Electro Funkology?
Well, in reality it doesn't affect Electro Funkology hardly at all, the show will still be recorded live in the same format, the only difference is that I won't be connecting to globalfunkradio.com's server when recording the show. Nothing else changes, in fact it should give me more freedom to keep it going weekly due to the fact that I won't have to skip shows if something comes up on a Saturday afternoon, which is something that is happening more frequently now that I have my son to think about. The only other last thing is that I need to make new jingles..
But what about the audience aspect?
This is a tricky question, but is probably best approached by first saying that the amount of people tuning in via the podcast for the last, er, 12 months since launching it have quite substantially eclipsed that of those who tuned in live to the show on the station, so in effect, y'all are my audience. Netradio is fickle and over the last while it's become increasingly apparant that we're entering an on-demand paradigm when it comes to content and other media buzzwords..., in other words people are opting to pick up their entertainment, whatever format, in their time and are less inclined to hang around and catch something live if they don't have to, this is especially true of online content, unless promoted in a much more focused manner.
OK, but what about those who tuned in live?
It is that which I most regret about the decision to leave as this is where the effect would be most felt, I can only thank everyone who tuned in regularly or irregularly to the show and/or turned up in the chat room, I've certainly had some great times and I hope they have too. Maybe in the future....
Is that it for Electro Funkology and radio then?
Absolutely not, Electro Funkology always was it's own independent entity, and a new home on another station, exclusive or syndicated, could very well be a possibility, there are many avenues open and that's been the most daunting part in a way. For now it will continue as a podcast and I think it could quite happily carry on being such but I'm always open to offers, if anyone has any proposals to put forward I would be happy to consider them. Email me or message on myspace
I'll add any more questions as they are asked which are not answered here.

A new phase....
Sorry for the silence over the last couple of weeks, things have been going on in the background that has affected my ability to do last week's show, electro funkology is a free show for everyone to download but obviously Daddy has to put food on the table so there are times when work has to take priority, the last two weeks have been such a time, probably the worst time to happen being that I've tried twice, unsuccessfully, to host an anniversary show. I think the time for that has passed now unfortunately...
So next week will be returning to normal, no big hoo-har, but we have a winner of the competition whom I will announce, apologies to all entrants who've been waiting to hear if they won or not, but I will tell you the prize that will sent out, and that is:
Sealed copies of;
Roxanne Shante - I'm Fly Shante
Almighty El-Cee - We Have Risen/School's Out
Man Parrish - Hey There Homeboys
Donald Dee Bowden - At The Party
and a new copy of the recently released
Omega II/Debonaire & Exzakt - Sonic Boom (original) / Ignition (Remixes)
Not a bad prize I'm sure you will all agree and definitely worth entering the competition for. :) Maybe the sound of people kicking themselves for not entering might be heard too. ;) Well, don't forget there will always be next year and quite possibly a couple of competitions in the future also!
The last bit of news I have is that Electro Funkology will be a podcast only show from now on. Till next time, put the boogie in ya body :)
