His main interests in the UFO subject are in the documented history the phenomenon has spawned and the people who investigate it. Lear has lived most of his life in New York City, where he made his living as a union stagehand and was involved in other aspects of theater as a playwright, producer, director and Shakespearean actor.

An animator and storyteller, is best known for Fred Crisman: Cave of the Space Nazis, a short film inspired by fan letters sent to Amazing Stories in the 1940s, during the height of the Shaver Mystery. He has interviewed the family of controversial UFO figure Fred Crisman and collaborated with Pacific Northwest historians to adapt Crisman and Shaver’s extraordinary lives into an upcoming tongue-in-cheek serialized audio drama. Crisman's life had many curious aspects. He was a key figure in the 1947 Maury Island UFO Sighting, where alleged fragments fell from a UFO. Or maybe they were just conventional pieces of metal. The story was the main focus of a book published in 1952, "The Coming of the Saucers," authored by former Amazing Stories editor Ray Palmer, and the "original" flying saucer witness, Kenneth Arnold. He has been fascinated all his life with cryptozoology, and in particular, Bigfoot, because of his work in films and with real apes. The most famous single piece of filmed material purported to be a Bigfoot is the Patterson-Gimlin film taken in 1967, and in the last 40 years, there has been an ongoing and still unresolved debate about whether the female figure seen in the film is a real primate of unknown species, or an ordinary human being wearing a fur suit. William put his research into a 2014 book called "When Roger Met Patty ," which details his analysis of the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film, addressing the question of hoax or fraud from the perspective of a professional makeup and creature effects designer, as well as the perspective of a vintage filmmaker. He started as a movie makeup artist when he was 20, and quickly gravitated toward the "creature" side of the field, doing prosthetics, masks, and makeup effects. William perfected doing film makeup and creatures were exacting in their nature, the kind of skills necessary for very realistic figures. He chose to expand his artistic range by applying the ultra-realistic techniques of film prosthetic work to the scientific discipline of reconstructing prehistoric creatures from fossil records, as well as exploring a new form of wildlife art, whereby living creatures were recreated with the highest museum taxidermy quality appearance, but without having to rely upon the skin, hide, fur or other remains of a dead animal to make the figure.

Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present a return visit from Dean Bertram, who has a Ph.D in history from the University of Sydney, Australia. His doctoral dissertation was titled “Flying Saucer Culture: An Historical Survey of American UFO Belief.” During this episode, he'll talk about his upcoming documentary, "The Man Who Invented Flying Saucers," about Raymond A. Palmer, notorious for introducing the legendary Shaver Mystery to the readers of Amazing Stories, the sci-fi magazine he edited. Bertram will reveal how the flying saucers were first discussed in that magazine, and expanded upon in Fate magazine, a pulp magazine Palmer co-founded and edited. The dark history of the UFO field, beginning with Men In Black, was chronicled by Palmer and the "original" flying saucer witness, Kenneth Arnold, in their book, "The Coming of Saucers." Bertram is also a filmmaker and film festival programmer. Over 75 years after the modern UFO era began, Bertram, an Australian expatriate and UFO historian, found himself living in central Wisconsin: In a neighboring county to the one Palmer called home, and just a short, back-road, commute to the rural property where Palmer ran his UFO publishing company. In the 1960s and 1970s, Gene visited the homes of Palmer and Shaver, and interviewed both.

So he was a staff translator and reviewer in the Office of Language Services at the U.S. State Department in Washington, DC, for 28 years. In 1988, he learned of an amazing poltergeist events that occurred in southern Poland. The incredible ghostly phenomena was centered around a teenage girl named Joasia Gajewski and eventually become national news in Poland. What makes the Gajewski case groundbreaking is that it continued for some seven years with such consistent energy that scientists were able to study it. The original version of book chronicling the cases,”The Elusive Force,” was written in Polish. He was always interested in offbeat things and in 1975 there was a rash of UFO sightings in Manitoba that he began investigating. So he reports that: "I went out with friends and one day I started writing up what I had heard from some of the people that had seen things. I had the article published and soon I was getting requests for more articles and more comments and to give lectures, and pretty soon I was the great UFO expert." Two of his books, published by Dundurn, "Abductions and Aliens" and "The Canadian UFO Report," were national bestsellers.

Gene and very special guest cohost Don Ecker observed the May 6, 2018 passing of prolific author Brad Steiger, at the age of 82. They were joined by two author/researchers who knew Steiger well: Jerome Clark and Kevin D. Randle. Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present a return appearance from Charles Lear, author of “Crashed Saucers and Malevolent Aliens: The Emergence of the Popular Modern UFO Mythos in the Late 20th Century.” The book focuses on those responsible for — or guilty of — creating and perpetuating key events involving flying saucer lore, such as the Aztec, NM and Roswell, NM crashes, the MJ-12 documents, disinformation agents, and so on and so forth. Lear also identifies one person, actually an old friend of Gene's, who is, in part, responsible for three of those legends or myths. Lear has been writing about UFOs for several years and still finds the subject, and the stories of the people involved, fascinating. Besides his interest in all things Fortean, his pursuits include paleontology, geology, hiking, bad movies, and music. He has been a theatre person for most of his life. As a performer, he sticks to Shakespeare, and he makes his living as an I.A.T.S.E. Local One welder/carpenter in the construction shop of the Metropolitan Opera. His first saucer book was “The Flying Saucer Investigators."

Now with better audio and fewer ads: On the evening of October 11, 1973, co-workers 42-year-old Charles Hickson and 19-year-old Calvin Parker told the Jackson County, Mississippi Sheriff's office they were fishing off a pier on the west bank of the Pascagoula River in Mississippi when they heard a whirring/whizzing sound, and saw two flashing blue lights and an oval shaped object 30–40 feet across and 8–10 feet high. Parker and Hickson claimed that they were "conscious but paralyzed" while three "creatures" took them aboard the object and subjected them to an examination before releasing them. Gene and Randall presented Calvin Parker to discuss this experience and another, 20 years later, as told in his book, "Pascagoula — The Closest Encounter: My Story." After fighting a long illness, Parker died on August 24, 2023 at the age of 68.

He also talks about the sad histories of some of the stars that never quite realized their full potential, and others, such as George Reeves (“Adventures of Superman”), whose lives ended tragically. Brian’s love of films began in childhood with his first Super 8mm projector given to him by his grandmother who also bought him his first film, a four-minute excerpt of a W.C. Fields comedy. Currently calling Morgantown, West Virginia home, Brian is fortunate to live in proximity of a number of still-operating drive-in theaters in the southwestern Pennsylvania area and loves taking his convertible to the drive-in during the warm summer months.
