...learn about Ambulance Ltd...
On Ambulance Ltd.'s debut album, one can find a number of stylistic influences from the Beatles and the Stones to Spiritualized, Elliot Smith and the Smiths. And that’s the point. “Our niche is not sticking to any particular niche,? says Benji Lysaght, guitarist. The four members of the New York group refuse to be stuck in any sub-genre of rock. “We don’t want to confine ourselves,? says Marcus Congleton, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter.
To that end, the group -- Congleton, Lysaght, Darren Beckett (drums) and Matt Dublin (bass and backing vocals) -- draws its inspiration from decades of rock: Motown, ‘60s psychedelic pop and blues, ‘70s rock, ‘80s Britpop/new wave and ‘90s shoegazing. “We don’t kick much ass volume wise,? admits Marcus. “Conceptually, poetically, we kick ass. Atmospherically, we kick ass.
The guys learned a lot from the '70s, and they're not just talking the Ramones and other punk rockers or the glam rock of David Bowie, but another side of the decade, the side the New York rock scene doesn't usually cop to: The blue eye-soul Hall and Oates, the pure pop of Seals and Crofts, the jazz-rock of Steely Dan and the classic rock of Fleetwood Mac.
"A lot of our stuff has '70s undertones to it, not so much the punk side, but the indulgent side that punk was rebelling against," says Marcus. "I already did my punk time in high school."
The members' musical backgrounds are diverse -- half the band has toyed in jazz -- and they found their ways to New York from as far away as Ireland and the West Cost.

In today's hip-hop world, cluttered with the same gat toting, money
throwing, pseudo tough guy personas, it's never easy to stand out from
the pack. Enter AWOL One, best known for his work with seminal Los
Angeles underground group The Shape Shifters. Known for his trademark,
raspy, off cadence flow, AWOL has always been one of those MCs who can
take a rhyme anywhere, over any beat. In the process, hes established
himself as a well respected subterranean rapper who can rock mics and
shows with the best of them; he's performed alongside the likes of
Common, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Afrika Bambata, Jurassic 5 and
countless others.
AWOL's new solo album, featuring KRS-One and production from the likes
of Grouch, DJ Rhettmatic and Pigeon John, and slated for release on
Cornerstone R.A.S., is a perfect example of the creative genius that
has earned him his rep. Replete with soulful, synthesized, neck
snapping beats and AWOL's vivid parables, clever rhyme schemes and
sometimes sing-song delivery, this is, in his own words "the best work
I've ever done." Of course, AWOL has been putting it down in such
fashion since his days coming up in Los Angeles' San Gabriel Valley
during the late eighties, the formative years for West Coast hip-hop.
Indeed, AWOL grew up going to the legendary Good Life's Project Blowed
open mic sessions in Los Angeles and started hanging out with the likes
of Mass Men, Aceyalone, Rob 1 and storied Cali graf crews CBS and LSD.
With such companions, it was no surprise the aspiring hip-hop junkie
fell into b-boying-tagging, djing and eventually writing rhymes.
During his early 20's, AWOL did all sorts of odd jobs to keep his
passion for hip-hop alive and raise his baby daughter in the process.
Soon, through his deft turntable skills, AWOL was afforded djing gigs
for various low ride tours and found himself heading toward where he
wanted to be. It was rapping and performing behind the mic that
ultimately interested him most.

THE STORY OF MR. ANONYMOUS
by Jeep
HOW DID THIS ALBUM COME TOGETHER
When i first started compiling music for the album, i had a concept in my mind of making the "ultimate chill vibe" cd with acoustic guitars and dancehall rhythms. i really wanted to make an international flavored party cd for people to relax and rock to by the pool, on a road trip, on a boat, etc. being a lifelong fan of reggae and dancehall music, i was hearing the voices and melodies of my favorite jamaican artists in the songs i was writing. on my last cd "cool & easy", i worked on a couple tracks with Michael Rose from Black uhuru. we had talked about working together again, so i called him up and things took off from there.
WHO IS MR. ANONYMOUS
The name mr. anonymous represents the collaborative spirit of the album, and is kind of a pseudo name for me as an artist and producer. although i wrote and performed most all of the music, i sang on about half of the material. it seemed like anonymity to a certain extent was the best way to present and feature all of the artists on the cd, kind of like a collage as opposed to a single artist cd.
HOW DID YOU HOOK UP WITH ALL OF THE ARTISTS
It all really started with Michael Rose. he got me in contact with Cutty Ranks who put me in touch with Barrington Levy and so on. the whole process was very random. for example, i had just finished recording a track with Cutty (in kingston), and we were talking about drummers. i mentioned Sly Dunbar, so he called him on his cell phone and handed the phone over to me as we were driving in the car. we talked and Sly said he would do the track if he liked it. he ended up bringing Sky Juice (the original percussionist for Black Uhuru) along for his session. earlier that same day, i was hanging out at Cutty's house and his prot©g© from Spanishtown, Dr. Innocent , came over to work on lyrics. he had heard the "Mr. Anonymous" track that Cutty had already finished, and wanted to do something on it as well. some of the artists i met for the first time hanging out in the studio. Turbulence was hanging out in the yard of the studio right at the time i had finished recording Sly and another dj named Danny English. my engineer Fatta saw him on the monitor, and we called him in to check out the track. he liked the groove and dj'd the track right then. for Bounty Killer, i left a copy of a track at the front desk of my hotel for his manager to pick up. she said he would do the track if he liked it....later that night, she called me and said Bounty wanted to do the track, and i ended up going over to Shaggy's studio to record with him. Dave Wakeling had done some shows with my band on our last tour, and we had discussed working on a song or project together. i sent him the track and so on.
HOW WERE THE SONGS CONSTRUCTED
Most every tune started as an acoustic guitar riff, and most of the songs with guest artists were written with their voicing in mind. for example, the song "SWING" was written with the Barrington Levy trademark "shidley woy" in my head. every time i played that song to myself, i couldn't get that sound out of my head. another example is the melody and phrasing for the song "GOOD VIBE". i had Michael Rose and Dave Wakeling singing both of those parts in my head before i even set the guitar down. other songs were composed on my groovebox. these songs were the more dancehall/hiphop vibe, and the dj's i picked were for their rhythmic delivery and tonal quality. with Cutty Ranks and Bounty Killer, i just sat and listened!!!
WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE TO WORK WITH
It's hard to pick a favorite because all of these guys blew me away. i would have to say the "experience" of hanging with Cutty Ranks probably sticks out the most. it was my first trip to kingston, and he let me stay at his place. he took me to his old neighborhood where he grew up and introduced me to the family that took him in as a kid. he turned me on to all of his local food spots and bars, and i basically tagged along on all his errands like the barbershop, carwash, local herbal doctor, domino game, etc. Cutty is intensely musical and constantly writing and reciting lyrics. he's extremely smart and has a lot to say. he stands right in your face tapping your chest while he raps, always projecting a message. i'd wake up every morning with a track blasting out of his stereo and he'd be singing lyrics into his dictaphone. one afternoon, Dr. Innocent came over and all three of us sat out in Cutty's backyard on cinder blocks smoking spliffs and writing lyrics. i just listened and took it all in. Cutty is a straight up respectable guy, and i wouldn't trade that experience for anything!!!
FINAL THOUGHTS
"Mr. Anonymous" has been the most fulfilling musical project of my life. the sounds and vibes on the album are kind of like an audible diary of the entire experience. i have truly been blessed to work with such amazing talent. there is so much spontaneity and life in every one of the performances. i really feel like the album truly captures the best of the best!!!

The Black Angels debut album has arrived! "'Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out'... bluesy pools of garage-scum shame mongering." - Spin Magazine
These are fighting times, people. We are surrounded by grit, spit, and bloody war, but in the distance moving forward is The Black Angels. They've returned unscathed from their first tour of duty with Seattle-based Light In The Attic Records , still armed with their self-proclaimed "Native American Drone 'N' Roll" and set to release their debut long player. Passover speaks of real-life horrors, death, and destruction with doses of love, sex, and healing. Don't lose track, these are caring times as well.
Formed in 2004 and hailing from the mescaline-infused outskirts of Austin, Texas, this gang of musical misfits has been on the road non-stop since their birth, performing at such renowned venues as Sin-e, Middle East, and Spaceland. In early 2006, the band's self-titled debut EP was dubbed highly recommended in Spin Magazine while receiving heavy radio airplay on such influential stations as KEXP and BBC Radio 1 by Zane Lowe. As of Jan 2006, the EP stands tall at #28 on the CMJ 200, a rare feat for a four-song introductory EP. This year will see live-action on all fronts including SXSW, North America, U.K., Europe, and Australia.
Growing in spades since their EP, Passover showcases a band on the make. Spiraling upwards to the skies with the enemy straight on their trail, "The Sniper At The Gates Of Heaven" sees The Black Angels reaching high and stretching out with trance-inducing guitar lines from Christian Bland, Nate Ryan's filthy medical dumpster bass, and the grizzly preacher vox of lead shaman Alex Maas. "Black Grease" is a bluesy monster full of swagger propelled by the primitive beat of drummer Stephanie Bailey and the mourning drone of organist Jennifer Raines.
10-songs deep, Passover has come again. Reflecting and questioning the intergenerational psychosis of American social life that surrounds us, The Black Angels put forth their answers in song. It's a "Call To Arms" for those ready to join the good fight, a rock 'n' roll salvation during the times we need it the most. As Maas bellows on "Young Man Dead," "Fire for the hills, pick up speed, and let's go..."

Goblin Cock is the new band from the ultra prolific genius that we all know and love, Rob Crow. He is a member of Pinback , Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, Optiganally Yours, and several others.
With Goblin Cock, Rob unleashes his inner Heavy Metal spirit, a ghost that has haunted his music since the beginning of his musical career. This is Metal the way that Ozzy and his cohorts envisioned it: murky, sinister, and dense. One look at the album cover and you'll get the idea.
However, the great thing about the band's debut, Bagged and Boarded, is that it still incorporates all the things that make Rob's music so intriguing. The great melodic sensibilities, the clever lyrics, and the compositional intricacies are all here on display. Only this time, the amps are turned up and the riffs just keep on coming.

...ever mysterious and amazingly talented guitarist/theme park manager Buckethead has opened the doors to his famed Bucketheadland once again, and this time, he has asked his friends to help him provide thrills and chills to his guests. Produced by Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Enter The Chicken , the latest and greatest musical attraction by Buckethead & Friends is set to take riders aboard beginning October 25. As the arcane story goes, Bucketheadland was opened back in 1989 as a refuge for himself and the chickens that had raised him in a coup from an early age. To keep the chickens entertained, Buckethead learned to play the guitar while growing up, but as the mystifying story unfolds, a string of harrowing experiences and mistreatment from the farmers on-site drove the masked axeman to burn down the coup and flee with his feathered friends to a new sanctuary. That safe haven, Bucketheadland grew into a world where both dreams and nightmares intertwined into a creative force that drove the guitarist to channel that energy into some of the most unique and innovative music to ever be created. Over the past 16 years, Buckethead has not only managed his theme park, but has also had time to exercise his love of guitar playing and music by traveling all over the world playing in front of audiences and has recorded over 13 records. Most of his discography is as a solo artist, but he has also contributed in bands like Guns N Roses, the Deli Creeps, Praxis, Giant Robot, El Stew and Cobra Strike . Throughout 2004, Buckethead was writing and recording the musical tracks that would comprise the titles for Enter The Chicken with engineer and programmer Dan Monti. In early summer of 2004, when he felt that he had a solid stable of innovative songs, Buckethead approached Tankian with the tracks and asked if he would be interested in releasing them through his own Serjical Strike Records. The singer and label owner not only agreed to release the record, but also offered to produce it. What makes Enter The Chicken unique among all other Buckethead albums is the contribution of different singers throughout the body of work. Both producer and guitarist recruited some of today brightest musical talents to lend their voice including Saul Williams, Efrem Schulz (Death By Stereo), Maura Davis (Denali, Bella Lea), Azam Ali (Vas, Niyaz), Bad Acid Trip, Maximum Bob (Deli Creeps), Gigi, Shana Halligan and Ani Maldjian. Even Tankian himself lends his vocals on the album. When all was said and done, a total of 11 different vocalists specializing in musical styles ranging from opera, metal, rap, indie rock, grindcore, world and everything in between found their way onto Enter The Chicken . This variety of intonation is complimented by Buckthead "array of genre bending guitar playing and songwriting that infuses his trademark frenetic picking and robotic riffage with hypnotic and vividly rich atmospheric elements creating a balance and link between beauty and the beast. Tracks like Botnus featuring Efrem Schulz and Funbus featuring Bad Acid Trip storm out of the gates with hellish fury letting up for only a few bars to allow the listener a quick breath, while the exquisitely ethereal track Coma featuring Azam Ali languidly arises within the album sequence with sophisticated elegance and grace. These distinguishing characteristics are present throughout the album, making Enter The Chicken an 11-track musical odyssey that is filled with sonic twists, turns and loops that provide listeners with a unique musical voyage that Tankian refers to as "the most diverse rock record this year."
