The Deadpod
Dead Show/podcast for 6/6/25
2025/06/06
Info (Show/Hide)
This week the Deadpod goes back to a crazy show that happened back on June 21, 1971, which was only the band's second performance in Europe.
Apparently they were invited to a outdoor festival in France by a rich fashion designer, who paid for the their transport, equipment and entourage to travel to Europe to play at this free festival. Well they were put in up some kind of nice Chateau, and the festival was rained out with a huge downpour. They sat around for a day or two and decided to break out the instruments and play at the grounds of the Chateau for the locals and those who traveled with them. The result is what we have here.. apparently the Chateau had quite a nice wine cellar which was liberated for the event and the audience spent a good deal of the time throwing each other into the pool..
I'm not at all sure that there were 'sets' in this show - this is how deadlists.com broke it down so I went with that - we'll hear the remainder next week..

This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982.
A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. While it is a Saturday show, we get a 'U.S. Blues' encore !

This week we venture back to a favorite venue, the Greek Theater at the University of California at Berkeley for the middle show of a three night run in the spring of 1982. Astute listeners will remember that I played the first night of this run just about a year ago, and this show is at least equally worth hearing..
The band treats us to a 'Jack Straw' opener, which then goes into a nice long 'Sugaree' with plenty of fireworks from Garcia. 'Cassidy' follows, then a funky 'Tennessee Jed' into a 'New New Minglewood Blues'. As always, the 'Cumberland Blues' that follows is a rocker, but the 'Lazy Lighting>Supplication' combo is no slouch! The set closes with a smokin' hot 'Deal'.

This week's Deadpod takes us to Hanover New Hampshire, where the band put on a fine show back on May 5, 1978.
On a fine recording we get a nice rendition of the first set, with some excellent versions of 'Candyman', 'They Love Each Other' and 'Dire Wolf'. The band revs it up as always for 'Passenger', and the closing 'Lazy Lightning>Supplication' duo is outstanding as well.
We'll hear set 2 next week..

This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982.
This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, and they rock out with 'Around and Around'; into a killer 'One More Saturday Night'. You might notice there are no stops between these second set songs on this night. The encore, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' has some great Garcia vocals..

This week on the Deadpod a fine show from the spring of 1982, one often overlooked due to the notoriety of the next night's performance.
This show, from April 17, 1982 in Hartford Connecticut features quite a nice first set, with fine versions of Bird Song and Jack-A-Roe (which was still relatively new at the time). I also would call your attention to the arrangement of El Paso, which is played at a much slower tempo than the usual polka arrangement, and benefits from that difference, I think. Also an interesting set closer here with 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter'.
The first two songs in this set are from an audience source, the rest come from a soundboard.

What a classic set list we have on this week's Deadpod. While this show took place back in 1991, none of the songs debuted earlier than 1972. Better yet, they are all played with joy and authority reminiscent of earlier periods in the band's history.
The tight opening China>Rider portends a great second set, and we are not disappointed for following this we have a fine 'Looks Like Rain' highlighted by some Healy echo on Bobby's vocals, then Garcia leads the ensemble into a long and dreamy 'Dark Star. The Star goes seamlessly into an interesting drums and space but then returns before leading into a continuation of 'Playin' In the Band' from the previous evening. Jerry then brings out 'Black Peter' in the ballad spot and delivers a soulful rendition. The set closing 'Lovelight' brings the crowd one last chance to shake their bones. Jerry returns for a great encore choice: 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue'.

An outstanding performance awaits on this week's Deadpod as we usher in the month of April with a memorable set from April Fools' Day, 1991 at Greensboro, North Carolina.
The band roars into a fantastic version of 'Jack Straw' and I for one, love the presence of Hornsby here and throughout the set. They dovetail into a nice version of 'Peggy-O' and Jerry is in fine form here. Bobby takes over for a rockin' version of 'It's All Over Now'; again Hornsby's contributions on the keyboard adds great effect. Jerry follows with a soulful 'Candyman' and Phil brings out 'Just LIke Tom Thumb's Blues' for the first time since Brent passed. They mesh wonderfully to bring us a fine version of 'Picasso Moon', then close the set with a magnificent 'Bird Song'

This week we're happy to present the second set from the band's performance back on March 22, 1973 at Utica New York.
The set starts with a rockin' 'Big River' and then the early 'Wave That Flag' and 'Me & My Uncle' before getting down to business with a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. The heart of the set follows with long jazzy versions of 'Truckin', 'The Other One' and 'Eyes of the World'. 'China Doll' always offers a sweet soulful splashdown as they end the set with the 'Sugar Magnolia'
There were apparently 2 encores, but we only have one on tape, 'One More Saturday Night', nevertheless there is a heaping measure of prime Grateful Dead here, and I hope you enjoy..

At the risk of featuring too many sets from this period I decided to bring you this long, wonderful first set from March 22, 1973. While most of these songs don't feature stratospheric jams, they are quite well played in my opinion, and this set does include a truly beautiful 'Bird Song' and a great ending with 'China->Rider- >Playin' In the Band'
There are two sources used, the majority is provided by a Betty Cantor board, probably one that was in a group that suffered water damage and mold - the missing reel was probably thrown away.. The missing segment here, starting with 'China Cat' is from a Dick Latvala cassette.
The fire marshall was apparently giving the band a hard time and threatening to shut the show down, which accounts for some of the warnings about keeping the aisle clear..

A roaring Scarlet>Fire leads off this week's Deadpod from the second set of the band's performance at the Rainbow Theater in London England on March 20, 1981.
They keep up the momentum throughout, going into a nice Sailor>Saint, then slowing things down with a beautiful He's Gone.. the transition to Drums is worthy of note, as is the transition, led by Phil Lesh, into a rousing Truckin' that leads off the post-drums segment. Wharf Rat is heartfelt and emotional, but they lead us back into some serious rockin' with Around and Around and Johnny B. Goode, not to mention a nice U.S. Blues encore.

This week's Deadpod takes us across the pond to London, where the band kicked off their Spring European tour of 1981 on March 20 at the Rainbow Theater.
They come out smoking on 'Feel Like A Stranger' and you know they were looking forward to this.. 'Friend of the Devil' which follows is played leisurely, they are in no hurry to get through this evening. 'C.C. Rider' follows with a bit of the blues.. This tape sounds wonderful, and all these tunes have a great treatment.. I'm a sucker for a great 'Loser' and this one doesn't disappoint, nor does 'Candyman'.. the set closing 'Deal' is incendiary..

This week on the Deadpod we have the pleasure of listening to the second set from the band's performance on February 17, 1973 in St. Paul Minnesota..
This set begins with a nicely jammed out 'Truckin' followed by 'Row Jimmy' and appropriately, 'Big River'.. Donna follows with a 'You Ain't Woman Enough' but that leads us into the heart of this set, an exquisitely crafted trifecta of 'Here Comes Sunshine' into 'China Cat Sunflower' and 'I Know You Rider'.. you definitely need this one.. the rest of the set is more straight ahead rocking Dead, culminating in a 'Saturday Night' closer and a 'Casey Jones' encore.. watch for Weir's screeching in the 'Not Fade Away' reprise.. :)

This week's Deadpod takes us back to the early days of 1973, this one was played in St. Paul Minnesota. This was when they were figuring out the wall of sound, and the first part of set 1 suffers from several sound issues as they try to dial in the mix, most notably in a bad start with a 'Promised Land' that suffers greatly. Don't let that scare you off from the rest of this long set. There is plenty of outstanding renditions here, especially from 'Loose Lucy' on culminating in an excellent 'Playin In the Band' to close the set. A surprise is to hear 'He's Gone' in the second slot here..

Happy Valentine's Everyone!
This week on the Deadpod we conclude the band's performance from February 19, 1982 in San Diego CA.
Again, this comes from an audience tape so while the fidelity isn't quite up to soundboard levels, it does give you a great sense of being there..
The pre-drums portion of the set is well played, with the highlight being a sweet Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance. The killer portion of this set comes as Drums ends, the band goes into a great Other One -- Phil really seems to be enjoying this one as he leads the charge throughout.. A sweet Stella Blue follows then an unusual ending as instead of Around and Around we get Man Smart, Woman Smarter into Johnny B. Goode not as the encore but as the set closer. The US Blues encore is a snappy ending to the enening..

This week's Deadpod again features an audience recording - this time of the performance on February 19, 1982 in San Diego California.
This, the third performance of 1982 finds the boys finding their groove, with a hot opening 'Bertha', a great 'Dire Wolf' and of course 'Althea'. While the vocals are sometimes a little far back on this audience recording, you can't say the same for Garcia's guitar -it is outfront and I really enjoyed hearing him on this tape - I hope you enjoy it as well!

This week's Deadpod features a great audience recording of a fabulous show by the late Jerry Moore..this is from January 20, 1979 at Shea's Theater in Buffalo New York.
I think this is a great first set... all of these are performed so very well. I especially love the tone of Garcia's work on 'Sugaree' and 'It's All Over Now'.. at times the vocals are a little low in the mix, but in the words of Mickey Hart - turn it up! :) The rest of this set is nothing to sneeze at either, especially the smoking hot 'Jack Straw' to close it out..
One note .. apparently the show started some 2 hours late ;)

This week's Deadpod features the second set from January 18, 1979 at Providence Rhode Island.
This is a rather unique second set as there is no drums/space segment here, unique since the band started introducing them as a matter of course back in the spring of 1978. It would be the last show without one for a long time. It's a solid show, in my opinion, the highlight being a raucous 'Trucking' that even includes Phil singing, and a solid 'Other One'.

This is a nice first set, energetic, especially for the time period (in a month Keith Godchaux would be leaving), and features some nice versions. I am especially fond of the 'Cassidy' here but there are several excellent tunes in this first set.

On this first Friday of 2025, we continue with the conclusion of the Grateful Dead's New Year's Eve concert from December 31, 1971 at Winterland in San Francisco.
A long, fun if somewhat sloppy at times show, the enjoyment the band was having is evident throughout.. After a Bill Graham intro they go into Truckin' then Billy really goes off as they go into a Other One jam, then quite interestingly enough into Me & My Uncle before going back into The Other One.. Some other highlights here include the first ever version of Big River, and the last Pigpen version of 'The Same Thing' which the band would not bring back for 20 years... There is some great high energy jamming in the 2nd half of the set, which apparently went on until 3:45 AM.

Happy New Year!
... but this NYE set by the Dead should put you in the mood to say goodbye to 2024 and to ring in a brand new 2025...
This show occurred at an important turning point for the Dead, as they moved forward with many 'new' tunes and with Keith and Donna as members of the band (Donna makes her vocal debut here on 'One More Saturday Night').
The sound on this FM broadcast is generally very good and the band is tight. The boys play here with a great youthful enthusiasm.. They open with 'Dancin' In the Streets' which they wouldn't play again until June of 76.. This is a long and fun first set, clocking in at over 90 minutes.. Pig has some great moments here - Mr. Charlie, Chinatown Shuffle and Next Time You See Me are great..
All in all a great first set, we'll hear set 2 next week..

Here's a bit of a Christmas present from the Deadpod - a great second set from December 12, 1973 at the Omni in Atlanta.
This features a fine combination of classic tunes and some unusual combos (see Mississipi Half-Step into Me & Bobby McGee, as well as Wharf Rat> Me & My Uncle>Eyes).
All the songs here are first rate - the China >Rider is wonderful as is the GSET.. then we get a complete Weather Report Suite..Eyes of the World into Morning Dew is one for the ages..
Then, after this massive set, I've included the soundcheck for this show, which has some really fun versions and even some Holiday sounds!

This week's Deadpod takes us down south to Atlanta Georgia, where the Dead played the first of 36 shows at the Omni back on December 12, 1973. This long and very tasty first set features many of the classics, all played quite well. It features only the second time that 'Peggy-O' was played, great sound throughout, and a very long and spacey 'Playin' In the Band' to end this first set.
Next week we'll play both set 2 and the soundchecks which are amazing in themselves..

We welcome December this week by returning to the second set of the band's performance at the Golden Hall in San Diego on November 24, 1979.
This set has an upbeat beginning with 'Alabama Getaway' going into a classic 'Greatest Story Every Told' - listen for Phil in that wild transition.
'Ship of Fools' follows, with Jerry giving us a find rendition complete with some extended soloing where it doesn't usually occur. 'Terrapin Station' follows, leading into a long and interesting 'Playin In the Band '.
Drums goes into a short Space, then we're treated to 'Sailor>Saint', followed by a fine 'Wharf Rat'. The boys then rock it up with a good 'Sugar Magnolia' and the obligatory 'One More Saturday Night' encore.

Happy Thanksgiving
As is the custom here on the Deadpod, this Thanksgiving we feature an acoustic set and I think we are especially fortunate this year as this set is one of the very best such sets from 1970.
From September 20, 1970 this set from the Fillmore East features both David Grisman and David Nelson on mandolin for much of the set, including a very unusual 'Big Railroad Blues' and an acoustic 'Truckin'. Jerry is in particular fine voice throughout, especially on 'To Lay Me Down'.
If you are a fan of acoustic Dead this is a set to savor .. I hope you enjoy..

This week's Deadpod takes us back to the Fall tour of 1979 - this time at San Diego for the Saturday night show that took place on November 24.
This first set opens with a rare and refreshing 'China Cat>I Know You Rider'. Love hearing this as an opener and I think it sets a nice atmosphere for the show. Cowboy songs come next then a really nice 'Peggy-O' and 'Cassidy' which are both highlights of this set.
A youthful sounding Brent gives us a nice 'Easy To Love You' which goes into a longer 'Althea'. They close things with 'Passenger'.

Here's a fun second set from November 1985 for this week's Deadpod.
'Touch of Grey' into 'Samson' starts things off with some nice Jerry solos in Samson... The 'High Time' that follows makes up for the flubbed ending on Samson with some excellent Jerry vocals. 'Let It Grow' is probably the highlight of the pre-drums segment however, with some excellent improvisational jamming. That spirit is carried through on the Drums and Space. 'Gimme Some Lovin' coming out of space is fun and leads into a sweet 'Stella Blue'. The remainder features some sharp rockin' and concludes with a fun 'In the Midnight Hour' encore.

This week we have one of the finest shows from the Fall tour of 1985. This comes to us from Rochester New York on November 7, 1985.
The opening 'Dancing In the Street' is strong and cohesive - we can tell we are in for a special night. The 'Dire Wolf' presents Jerry in fine voice. While Bobby is a bit cheesy on 'CC Rider' the 'Loser' that follows is excellent. The country 'Mama Tried'>'Mexicalli Blues' is a great lead in to a rockin' 'Cumberland Blues'. While 'Beat it On Down the Line' is also tight and well-played, the set closing 'Deal' is a tad fast, but still always a nice set closer..

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at the Charlotte Coliseum in
Charlotte, NC on October 10, 1989.
A good example, I think, of why this was a high water mark in the band's performance history, this second set showcases their ability to improvise both in spots intended and unintended.
The latter I think, is shown in the opening 'Blow Away', which despite some forgotten lyrics and miscues turns into a fine opening number. The jamming in the 'Help>Slip>Frank', especially out of Franklins' and into a fine drums, is an example of some more expected, but nevertheless, successful creativity.
Lastly I have to point out how good 'Not Fade Away is here.. far from being mailed in...

This week I thought it appropriate to listen to a fine show from the great state of North Carolina, I could only wish that I could help the folks there who have been ravaged by the terrible storms..
This is a well played show from the fall of '89.. a nice Foolish Heart starts things, and frankly I enjoyed every song in this first set. The highlight might be 'Bird Song' where Jerry uses a number of ineresting MIDI effects...
The Johnny B Goode encore is also a nice touch..

This week the Deadpod travels to January of 1980 for an unusual benefit show that the Dead appeared at for Cambodian refugees in Oakland, along with Jefferson Starship, the Beach Boys and Carlos Santana and John Cippolina.
This is a tight and well played set throughout. The opening 'Jack Straw' into 'Franklin's Tower' is crisp and edgy. 'Minglewood' is a standout as well. I really enjoy all of these, but the 'Playin' is probably the highlight, although the Santana solo in 'Not Fade Away' is a treat as well; its interesting to hear these three great guitarists playing together..

A fine second set awaits you on this week's Deadpod as we explore the second set from the band's performance at the Cumberland Coutny civic Center in Portland Maine on September 17, 1982.
This is a matrix recording - but the first two songs are a mix of several audience sources as the soundboard for those doesn't seem to exist.. 'Touch of Grey' and 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' are played uptempo and crisply..Their followed by a beautiful rendition of 'High Time'; Jerry's emotive vocals just hint at how expressive this set will be.
'Estimated' follows, then a delicate 'Eyes of the World'. Following drums and space Weir teases a Spanish Jam but they eventual let Phil take the helm and lead them into the powerful 'Other One' intro.. the crowd loves it and when they finish and go into 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' there is a fair amount of sing along..
The highlight of the set in my opinion is the tremendous version of 'Morning Dew' that follows.. Jerry is at his most expressive here.. words won't do it justice.
A fine 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set and a 'US Blues' encore caps the evening...

Hey Now! This week the Deadpod takes us to Portland Maine, for a show that took place at the Cumberland County Civic Center on September 17, 1982.
This 12 song first set is a concise reading of many of their standards. Brent and Phil are upfront in the mix and overall I find these quite enjoyable. There is a false start in 'Me & My Uncle' which is quite unusual, and we have 'Dupree's' 2 weeks in a row- I'm sure that's a Deadpod record ;)

This week's Deadpod features the second 'Field Trip' at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds in Veneta Oregon on August 28,1982.
While not as famous, or as monumental, as the first Field Trip immortalized in the 'Sunshine Daydream' movie, this show has plenty of stellar moments and is certainly worthy of a listen.
While the first set is not as packed with jaw-dropping moments as parts of set 2, there are plenty of interesting moments here. Brent and Jerry are both in fine form throughout. You can certainly tell when the boys get it all together here at the end of the set, with a wonderful 'China>Rider'.Just as in the first field trip, this combo gets everyone shakin' their bones and the band seems to hit the X factor here.

This week's second set from the August 6, 1971 at the Hollywood Paladium is a classic.
It opens with 'St. Stephan' - they'd only play this one five more times before 1976.. a nice 'Truckin' goes into drums, then they roar into 'The Other One' and segue flawlessly into 'Me & My Uncle' - the first time they tried this and it worked perfectly.. they then go back into the 'Other One' but if you listen you can hear a WRS prelude tease before they do... Things mellow a bit with 'Deal' but the rest of the set is just as intense with 'Sugar Magnolia' then a great 'Morning Dew' and Pigpen lets it loose with a 23 minute plus 'Lovelight'..

As we come to the end of the Days Between, and reflect on what Jerry gave us I thought it appropriate to present a classic show from when the band was young and ferocious. This comes to us from August 6, 1971 at the Hollywood Palladium. Long considered a classic, I'm sure you'll agree if you haven't yet been fortunate enough to hear this performance.
This first set contains no clunkers.. I think each of these songs is a top-notch rendition, but for sure I have to point out 'Mr. Charlie' and 'Cumberland Blues'.. but the highlight here is clearly the great version of 'Hard to Handle'.. Pigpen is at his finest ...

Clearly the 'Dark Star' we open with is the highlight of this set, if not the show. It traverses the heavens for over half and hour and features some excellent improvisational displays (see the Dark Star map below). It leads into a lovely and soulful 'Comes A Time'. 'Sugar Mag' follows to get things rockin' again, and that leads into a 'Brown Eyed Women' which is unfortunately cut on the tape. Another Jerry ballad - 'Stella Blue' follows and then the band revs it up for a fine 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road>Not Fade Away' conclusion to this epic set.
'One More Saturday Night' is the encore, although this one was played on Wednesday :)

This week's Deadpod features a massive show from the summer of 1972. This show is so big that I'm splitting it into three Deadpods - this week we will hear most of set 1..
This features some fine renditions of some of their standards - highlights include a great Sugaree, a mid--set China>Rider and a raucous Tennesee Jed.

This week we have the second set from the band's performance at Alpine Valley on July 7, 1984.
This is a strong set throughout, with the band really coming together I think to deliver some great versions of these songs.
'Samson and Delilah' opens with the drummers providing the familiar beat.. Jerry follows with 'Cold Rain and Snow' - always appropriate for a July show. They then seg into 'Playin' In the Band', while not overly long, this version does feature some interesting Brent effects and seqs interestingly into 'China Doll'. Jerry hits this one just right and then they move into a very good Drums segment. They come out of drums surprisingly into 'Terrapin Station' as you think you hear some 'Other One' notes being played.. but the Terrapin is told well and goes into Bobby doing 'Throwing Stones' with a few different lyrics. 'Not Fade Away' follows, but is short, as Phil insists they move into 'Lovelight'! the first since NYE 82.. Bobby does a fine version here, and they close with a return to 'Not Fade Away'. A 'Brokedown Palace' encore prepares the faithful for that long trek up the hill...

This week we travel to one of the beloved summer venues - Alpine Valley - for a show that took place back on July 7, 1984, a Saturday night.
The first set starts with 'Hell In A Bucket', then moves into a fine 'Dire Wolf' Jerry really belts it out here, and its fun to listen to. 'New New Minglewood Blues' follows with Bobby telling us its 'T for Alpine Valley' .. 'Dupree's Diamond Blues follows - a bit slower, but still one that brings a smile. 'My Brother Esau' shares Bobby's anti-war message. 'Brown Eyed Women' may be the highlight of the set with some strong work by Jerry here. 'Looks like Rain' goes into 'Might as Well' to close the set, and Jerry sounds like his voice needs a break..

This week's conclusion of the band's performance down at Eugene on June 24,1990 displays several sides of the band which highlight their agility and craft at putting together a setlist.
From the opening sequence which I'd describe as light and bouncy - 'Foolish Heart' into 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' they move into 'Standing on the Moon' and 'Box of Rain'. They follow with a typically animated Bob Weir on 'Estimated' into 'He's Gone' - all before Drums and Space. He's Gone doesn't end with the mellow a cappella fade out they often employed, instead they move into drums and space and build into a great post-drums 'Other One'>Wharf Rat>Sugar Magnolia conclusion to a great show.
The 'Brokedown Palace' encore caps off a fine Sunday show...

It sure feels like summertime here, and one of my favorite summer time tours was back in 1990.. this week we go back to Eugene for a fine show that took place on June 24, 1990 at Autzen Stadium at the University of Oregon.
The first set starts with a fine Help>Slip>Frank - Jerry has some great leads here.. Masterpiece follows and Bob does the vocals just right. Loose Lucy made its reappearance in the Spring of 90, and Jerry breaks it out here for the sixth time since 1974.
Brent shines 'Just A Little Light'.. a personal favorite of mine. Picasso Moon and Candyman follow and the set closes with an excellent 'Let It Grow'...

Here is the second set from the band's performance at the Boston Music Hall on June 10, 1976.
Samson always seemed like a favorite to break out in Boston, and revs things up for a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank' here. Nice harmonies here, and the Slipknot features some upfront work by Keith. Bobby does a fine 'Let It Grow', then we have a mid-set 'Friend of the Devil' - a bit more spacey than usual, but that leads into the highlight of the set, a 'Playin' In The Band' which leads into an excellent 'Space jam'. That eventually goes into 'Dancin' In The Streets' and the band closes out the set with a rocking 'U.S. Blues'.

A fine show from the comeback year of 1976 graces this week's Deadpod. This is from June 10, 1976 at the Boston Music Hall in Boston. The thirteen song first set should provide plenty of chances to reflect on how fortunate we hare to have this music after all these years..
In general this set, as most from this time period, shows the band concentrating on tight arrangements with powerful singing, perhaps at the expense of more free-flowing jamming. Some of the highlights here include a great 'Music Never Stopped', a short but sweet 'Sugaree', and of course a lovely 'Mission In the Rain', a song that did not last long in the Dead's rotation, but of course did more so in Jerry's solo work.
I'd be remiss to not point out the lovely harmony on 'Looks Like Rain' with Bobby and Donna, as well as Keith's up front piano throughout. The closing 'Might As Well' is notable for Phil's unique bass..

This week the Deadpod returns to Milwaukee for the second set of the band's performance from May 30, 1980.
A fine Scarlet>Fire opens this set, including some excellent jamming in the transition (by the way check out this week's Deadcast for an excellent discussion of 'Scarlet Begonias' here: https://www.dead.net/deadcast )
A seemingly short 'Playing In the Band' follows, but there is some excellent improvisation going on in the transition to a sweet drum segment that follows.
'Not Fade Away' flows into the 'Black Peter' and then into an excellent 'Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad'. Bobby ends the set with a nice 'Good Lovin' but the boys really get worked up on the 'Alabama Getaway' encore.. not to be missed..

I think we have a good one to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend - this comes to us from May 30, 1980 at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
The first set starts with a fine 'Jack Straw' - the first minute forty is supplied by an audience tape but hold on because the rest is a fine soundboard. The transition jams from Jack Straw to Franklin's Tower are off the chart.. Jerry is in fine form here.. as evidenced by the hot Uncle and Big River that follow...
They include a 'Passenger' here, without Donna of course, but still smokin'... then Brent does an early 'Easy to Love You'. They bring down the house with a set closing 'Music Never Stopped'.

This week on the Deadpod we continue with the second set from the band's performance at the Greet Theater in Berkeley California on May 21, 1982.
The set kicks off with a tight 'Playing In the Band' highlighted by contributions from Brent that are just exactly perfect. An uptempo 'Uncle John's Band' follows, the jam leading out into drums has a nice interplay between Phil and Jerry that is quite cool. Drums has some intense moments.. they go into a nice ensemble version of 'The Wheel'. A Playin reprise follows, leading into a soulful 'Black Peter'. 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set, and they return with Jerry singing a great version of 'Don't Ease' as a uptempo encore.

This week we go to the wonderful Greek Theater in Berkeley California for the band's performance on May 21, 1982. I think this was one of the better years in terms of the band's history and this is not only a fine recording but a well-played set that I'm sure you'll enjoy.
The first set starts with a 'Bertha>Greatest Story' combo, one that was fairly new at the time. Jerry slows it down with a 'Friend of the Devil' but the 'Uncle'>'Big River' that follows benefits greatly from his nimble guitar. A nice 'Bird Song' flows into Bobby's 'CC Rider', then we have an excellent 'Althea', not only is Jerry in fine voice, but his delivery is just exactly perfect. Bob delivers a nice 'Looks like Rain' and they close with a boppin' 'Might as Well'.

This second set is well-executed, tight yet containing several delightful spacey interludes. The opening 'Playin In the Band', while short, is quite interesting and gives way to an excellent 'Crazy Fingers'. That leads into 'Uncle John's Band', afterwards the band goes into a rather extended Drums and Space, whcih are quite high powered and interesting.
Post-Drums highlights include a powerful 'Going Down the Road' and an excellent 'Dear Mr. Fantasy> Hey Jude reprise'. Jerry's ballad slot gives us a sweet 'Stella Blue' and they close the set with a nice 'Lovelight'. A 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' encore ends the festivities.

Some of the highlights of the first set include a very nice Sugaree (Jerry's voice is a bit frail at times but he carries it off the entire show). 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' is always welcome in my book. Jerry does an excellent version of 'So Many Roads' and the 'Bird Song' after 'Eternity' is a sweet way to wind up the first set.

We roll into April, and the prelude to the big Solar Eclipse, we get to hear a wonderful second set from the Grateful Dead's performance on Sunday, March 30, 1980 in Passaic New Jersey.
While the setlist might look anything but innovative, the playing on these great classic tunes is anything but pedestrian. The entire pre-drums is full of some wonderful ensemble moments punctuated with some great Garcia solos. In particular, I'm fond of this 'Fire on the Mountain' and 'Eyes of the World' bu Weir's vocals on 'Estimated' are something else as well.
Post-drums, the 'Black Peter' is quite soulful and the encore, 'U.S. Blues' was highlighted by an appearance on stage of John Belushi sticking a cartwheel on stage and grabbing a mic for a 'wave that flag' with the band... fun!

Brent is fairly new to the band, and finding his way on some of these tunes.. they open with a relatively new 'Alabama Getaway' which goes into 'Promised Land' for a rockin' start to the evening. 'Cassidy' which follows 'Peggy-O' is a bit rushed, but the 'Loser' that follows is quite good. Brent debuts his 'Far From Me' which still needs some work but shows promise. Another highlight is the 'New Minglewood Blues' where Brent's Hammond B3 sounds especially good. The rest of the set is quite good as well - the 'Althea' is well done and Bobby adds alot of energy to the 'Sailor>Saint' combo to close the set.

In honor of the upcoming St. Patrick's Day I decided to bring you a St. Patrick's day Dead concert - this one is from March 17, 1988 at Oakland California.
The first set, which we will hear this week, features a nice opening 'Hell In A Bucket' into a fine 'Sugaree'. Another highlight is the first 'Memphis Blues' without Bob Dylan. 'Row Jimmy' and a nice 'Let It Grow' finishes the first set. I'll bring you the second set next week..

Here is the second set from the band's performance on March 3, 1981 at the beautiful Music Hall in Cleveland Ohio.
They open with 'China Cat', while Garcia flubs the first verse, he makes up for it with a fine transition into Rider. A rockin 'Samson and Delilah' follows and then a long 'He's Gone'. The Drums section is particularly potent here, leading not into a long Space but instead into a 'Sailor>Saint' combo. The 'Black Peter' that follows is very soulful indeed. They close the set with 'Good Lovin' then return for a 'Casey Jones' encore.

I think this week's Deadpod brings March in both as a lion and a lamb = this first set from Cleveland on March 3, 1981 has some great rockin' tunes and some sweet ballads to please the most discerning Deadhead.
Don't be put off by the start of 'Feel Like a Stranger' - the audience patch only lasts for a short bit - the rest of this tape is a fine sounding soundboard in which you can hear the interplay between the members most clearly. A sweet 'Peggy O' follows then a fine 'Me & My Uncle' into 'Big River' highlighted by some nice Garcia work. That continues in the 'Bird Song' that follows.. and leads into 'Looks Like Rain' -this one builds to a nice crescendo. The rockin' returns with a great 'Big Railroad Blues' - nice work here by Brent. A long 'Little Red Rooster' follows.. Brent adds some nice B3 work here. The set closing 'Deal' ramps things back up properly..

A wonderful set of classic Grateful Dead awaits your listening pleasure on this week's Deadpod as we visit the second set from their performance on February 15, 1973 in Madison Wisconsin.
The opening 'Here Comes Sunshine' foretells a special night as the band warms up with some fine renditions of several favorites leading into the real treat - a special 'Dark Star'. This version features some extra-special Phil Lesh contributions which foretell a lovely 'Eyes of the World'. The band paints a beautiful portrait here which then turns into a sweet soulful 'China Doll'.
Things ramp up from there with versions of 'Promised Land' and 'Sugaree' before a set closing 'Sugar Magnolia. They return for double encore, of which we only have on this tape the fine 'Uncle John's Band'.

This week the Deadpod goes back 51 years to February 15, 1973 when the Grateful Dead played a massive show in Madison Wisconsin. this first set clocks in at about 100 minute... it starts with a song they debuted about a week earlier 'Loose Lucy'. They are still warming up when they then 'Beat It On Down The Line'. Several favorites follow, but things really get rolling with a fine, up tempo 'Row Jimmy'. The highlights of the set follow, with a wonderful 'China Cat >I Know You Rider' and a jamming 'Playing In The Band'. Bobby really steps it up in the last third of this first set..

An unusual second set setlist and an unusual guest highlight this week's Deadpod from February 12, 1989 in Los Angeles.
Following an opening 'Iko, Iko', Bob breaks out 'Monkey and the Engineer' for the final time, although it sounds a bit different than in the past due to Bob's different timing of the verses. 'Alabama Getaway' follows, another unusual second set choice, then again, 'Dire Wolf', if with a bit of a ragged chorus.A nice version of 'Cassidy' follows, then 'Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again' - with Dylan adding some vocals when Bobby 'forgets' in the middle of the song..
An interesting 'Other One' follows post-drums, with a Kodo drummer adding some intensity, but it is a bit shorter than usual.. 'Stella Blue' follows and flows into a set closing 'Foolish Heart'. A nice double encore follows, with Dylan taking the vocals for 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door'..

This week's Deadpod features a historic performance - it occurred on the night the band was 'busted down in New Orleans' - January 30, 1970 at The Warehouse in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Also historic as it was the last show that Tom Constantin played in the Dead.. but aside from that this is a fine show and I think you'll enjoy hearing this very good tape..
The tape is missing part of the opening Casey Jones, nevertheless good vibes here and on the following 'Me & My Uncle'.. 'Black Peter' is wonderful.. I also think the 'High Time in this set is absolutely perfect. 'Cumberland Blues' is hot.. hotter than you think that song should be ;) and is there a better song to pull out here than 'Easy Wind'? The 'Cryptical Envelopment>Other One>Cryptical' is hard driving Dead! They do a sweet transition into 'Cosmic Charlie' - sadly this one is cut as well... .

Here is the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena on January 25, 1993.
They start with a nice uptempo 'China Cat Sunflower->I Know Your Rider', which gets things off to a very good start. Sadly that tempo is halted with the following 'Way To Go Home'. They then go into another new tune at the time 'Corrina' which however has the virtue of providing an interesting transition into a 'Playin' In the Band' reprise (they had played Playin' the night before).
Drums and Space are quite good, as was standard in latter day Dead, and lead quite interestingly into a powerful 'All Along the Watchtower'. Jerry brings out August West the 'Wharf Rat' and they then finish the set with a jazzy 'Around and Around'.
Phil does an excellent 'Box of Rain' encore.

This week's Deadpod features a nice later day show from January 25, 1993 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.
This one opens with a fine 'Shakedown Street' - always a good omen, and I think the rest of the set is quite nicely played as well. 'The Same Thing' makes an appearance, as does a relatively rare 'Loose Lucy'. One of the highlights has to be a wonderful version of 'Maggie's Farm' - I always enjoyed the band's harmonies on this one. They close this rather short first set (common for this time period) with a nice 'Music Never Stopped'.

This week's Deadpod returns for the second set of the band's performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena on December 27th, 1989.
Clarence Clemmons makes a surprise appearance on the opening Iko, Iko and adds a great touch here as the band gets the crowd wound up for what is a fine second set. A spacey 'Playin' In the Band' follows - with some extraterrestrial exploration before going into a lovely 'Crazy Fingers'. 'Uncle John's Band' caps off the pre-drums set. The post-drums is highlighted by a truly wonderful 'Morning Dew'.. there was an issue with Jerry's sound at the end but that really doesn't detract from what is a great version.
The boys then surprise the crowd with a double encore -'Johnny B. Goode' and 'Black Muddy River'..

This first set has some great rocking going on, as is evident from the opening 'Cold Rain and Snow' and 'Greatest Story Ever Told'. Brent supplies 'Never Trust a Woman' aka 'Good Time Blues'. then we have a fine 'Althea' before a rockin' 'Uncle>Big River'.
The crowd gets it's wish as Phil then sings 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues'. A fine 'Bird Song' follows before a tight 'Promised Land' closes set 1.

This week's Deadpod features the conclusion of the band's performance at McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado on December 14, 1990.
This is a fine, professional performance... starts out with a relatively new song, 'Victim or the Crime', then flows into an uptempo 'Foolish Heart', then 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter'..
The He's Gone that follows flows nicely into a particularly interesting Drums and Space.. then into a reprise of the opening night's 'Dark Star'. The boys flow into a rousing version of 'I Need a Miracle' - assisted by the crowd.. 'Wharf Rat' follows before the set closing 'Turn On Your Lovelight'..
A beautiful 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' closes the set and the run...

From what I think is the last strongest year of the Grateful Dead, this week's Deadpod comes to us from Denver Colorado on December 14, 1990. This was the last show of a three show run at the old McNichols Arena there, and is a fine culmination of what was a very strong run (you can go back in the Deadpod archives to hear the previous two shows).
There is no Bruce Hornsby this evening, and Vince stands out throughout - most of the time in a good way I think. The opening Shakedown is quite nice - long and bouncy.. 'Picasso Moon' - a song withe some of the perhaps silliest lyrics ever - is better here than earlier in the year. The 'Peggy-O' that follows is quite sweet and I actually think the 'Little Red Rooster' here is one of their better versions of this one.
The highlight in this set has to be the fine soulful 'To Lay Me Down' - not played often, but done with great emotion here. The transition into a great version of 'Let It Grow' leaves the audience excited for what is to come in set 2..

This week we conclude our presentation of the band's performance at the Warfield in San Francisco back on September 26,1980.
This third set starts with Scarlet>Fire and while it is a worthwhile listen the real fire breaks out on the 'Estimated Prophet' that follows.. some great Garcia/Weir interplay and the entire band is cooking here. The 'Eyes of the World' that follows is a bit fast for my taste, but certainly has some sparkling runs. Drums/Space leads out into a fine 'Not Fade Away' - plenty of Brent adds lots of power here. They lead out quietly into 'Black Peter'... Sugar Mag ends the set and there is a fine 'Brokedown' encore, which Jerry restarts, probably due to his voice being a bit rough by now.. :)
A thoroughly enjoyable set, hope you enjoy it as well..

Because I didn't want to orphan the rest of this show, and because it is a fine recording and a good show, I'm going to bring you the rest of the performance we started last week from the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on September 26,1980.
This is a fine electric set, with many classic numbers, if not a huge amount of jamming. The opening 'Feel Like a Stranger' features some interesting Brent additions. All of these songs are well played, if a bit safely - I think this was being recorded for what would become 'Dead Set' although none of these were included.
Highlights for me here are the closing Tennesee Jed>Sailor>Saint, although there are no dogs here.

As always here on the Deadpod, I'm publishing this holiday edition on Thanksgiving day for you to enjoy sometime during your festivities, if you like. As is also the tradition on the Deadpod, this is an acoustic show, and I've managed to find a really beautiful acoustic set for this year, coming to us from September 26, 1980 at the Warfield in San Francisco.
This one starts with the first 'To Lay Me Down' since 10/19/74, and the first 'On the Road Again' since 12/1/66!
These versions are really wonderful, including the very first acoustic 'Cassidy' and a soulful 'China Doll' into 'Ripple'.

This week the Deadpod travels to the East Coast for a show that took place around 2 months after last week's show.
This is the early show from the Fillmore East in NYC on January 2, 1970. This is quite a nice tape, don't let the few seconds at the beginning fool you.
The 'Mason's Children' opener is a good representation of this somewhat odd song. 'Black Peter' is quite extended, much more than usual for this song. 'Hard to Handle' is explosive as usual. The boys really hit their stride here with the 'Cryptical Envelopment>Drums>Other One'. I quite enjoy the 'Cosmic Charlie' that follows but that's a tune I thought they never played often enough :)
I hope you enjoy it..

This week's Deadpod contains part two of the band's performance at the Fillmore in San Francisco on November 7, 1969.
Hyper-energetic, this one contains loads of frantic jamming and amazing soaring guitar work by Garcia and Lesh. After a fairly short China>Rider, they go into a deep exploration with 'Dark Star' which goes into an unusual 'Uncle John's Jam', then back out with Lesh leading the charge into 'The Other One'. The highlight, for me, is the wonderful closing number, Pigpen in all his glory on a great 'Lovelight' rap.

For this week's Deadpod we go back to 1969 for a show at the Fillmore in San Francisco that took place on November 7, 1969.
I'm going to play this music in two parts, although it is unclear whether there were really one set or two.. part one opens with a powerful 'Morning Dew' - Jerry really brings it at the end of this one!
Pigpen follows with a classic 'Hard To Handle' - so great to listen to the Pig bring it on this one! 'Casey Jones' follows then a couple of Bobby's ditty's 'Mama Tried' and 'Me & My Uncle' - they all sound great on this early soundboard! There follows some general hilarity with someone in the audience playing the 'Star Spangled Banner' on a flute and several short tunings.. following a nice 'Cold Rain and Snow' we are treated to dual harmonies from Garcia and Pigpen on 'Next Time You See Me'. They slow it down a bit on a soulful 'High Time' before we close this first part with some classic Pigpen on 'Good Lovin'.

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta Georgia on October 29, 1985.
They come out strong with a fine version of 'Mississippi Half-Step' into 'Franklin's Tower' - lots of energy and interplay here, and the first Franklin's not out of Slipknot since '83. . This then goes into a very good 'Sailor>Saint' .. one of the last five times they would ever play this combo, ever. A lovely 'Crazy Fingers' follows, although Jer gets lost in the lyrics, its a lovely transition into Drums..
'The Wheel' comes out of Space in a swirl of sound, and Phil is bombing on 'The Other One' that follows.. after 'Wharf Rat' they close the set with 'Johnny B. Goode' which hadn't had this slot since December 81..

This week's Deadpod takes us to the Fabulous Fox theater in Atlana Georgia for the boy's performance on October 29, 1985.
We have an energetic first set, out of the gate with a fine 'Feel Like a Stranger', the 'Friend of the Devil' that follows is very good, Jerry is in excellent voice for this period, much better than many nights during '85. I love how Brent sounds here, personally. I quite enjoyed all of these renditions, and while this is a short first set (some say caused by technical difficulties) it is still a nice set to enjoy on a crisp Autumn afternoon.. I hope you enjoy it.

The second night of the 'From Egypt with Love' run at Winterland, this set features some very strong Drums and Space, highlighted by a guest appearance from Lee Oskar, giving it a decided Egyptian feel. While Jerry flubs the lyrics to 'Terrapin Station' a fine 'Samson and Delilah' more than makes up for it. The show also has a rare set-ending 'Truckin' which is first rate.

This week on the Deadpod I've decided to feature the second night from the historic 'From Egypt With Love' run at the Winterland in October of 1978.
While the opening 'Sugaree' is patched for about the first minute, don't let that dissuade you this one- the sound is crystal clear throughout afterwards, and the band is listening to each other and the result is a dynamic, lovely evening of music.
Donna Jean in particular provides some lovely backing vocals on "Looks Like Rain' and 'Music Never Stopped'. Jerry is on point here with several delicious solos as well.

This week we continue with the second set from the first night of the band's historic 9 night run at Madison Square Garden in September 1990.
This set sparkles with some excellent Garcia leads throughout, starting with the Scarlet, but Jerry soars in the transition to Fire and in the solos there. The set includes not only a nice jammed out 'Truckin' but a sweet 'Terrapin Station' all before drums.. Phil brings home 'The Other One' nicely, and the Wharf Rat is righteous..

This week I've decided to feature the first show of the historic 9-show run at Madison Square Garden in New York City on September 14, 1990. This was without Bruce Hornsby, who didn't make his appearance with the band until the following night; nevertheless this is a fine show, with the band displaying lots of energy and enthusiasm as they return to the Garden for this nice long run of shows.
Each of these selections are quite well played. The opening 'Stranger' displays how well they are listening to each other. I'm quite partial to the 'New Minglewood Blues' a tune that I usually categorize as a throw-away, which is really rockin' here. 'Ranble on Rose' features some interesting Jerry midi work with a trumpet solo. I love how this soundboard recording allows us to hear the enthusiastic fan response, for example on 'Black Throated Wind'..

A massive second set of classic Grateful Dead for your listening pleasure this week on the Deadpod. We present the second set from September 9, 1972 at the Hollywood Palladium.
There is a whole lot of beautiful music here, starting with a fine China>Rider with a great transition. The 'Friend of the Devil' is nicely done, and its nice to hear the faster original tempo. I also welcome hearing the fine contribution here and thorughout from Keith whose keyboards meld so well.
The first of many melting moments happens in the fine 'He's Gone' into 'Truckin' transition. while there is a cut here this is an wonderful version. What is completely off the hook though is 'The Other One'. This is about a 34 minute excursion into the far reaches of space, with Lesh and Garcia leading the way to previously unknown plateaus. I think you'll love this.. and it goes into a very sweet 'Stella Blue'.
Be sure and check out the announcements after the 'Stars and Stripes Forever' for a good laugh...

The Fall of 1972 was an interesting transitional period for the Grateful Dead. They began to explore longer shows with more exploratory jamming. This week's Deadpod, from September 9th of that year, showcases some of these changes. In this week's first set, we have plenty of classic songs, as well as some intense jamming. Some of the highlights for me include the sweet 'Sugaree', 'Bird Song' and Keith's transitions in 'Black Throated Wind'. Of course I have to mention the almost 19 minute long 'Playin In the Band' - long a vehicle for exploration during this period. As you'll see next week, it was not alone in this show.

We continue this week with the second set form the band's performance at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View CA. on August 25, 1993.
This is a fine setlist - highlighted by some outstanding work by Garcia especially during the transitions between songs. A Scarlet>Fire opens things up and Jerry gives us some remarkable work during the transition and in the opening solo of Fire. 'Estimated Prophet' begins a nice long stretch of music highlighted by a 'Terrapin Station' and a sweet jam out of Terrapin into Drums and Space.
'All Along the Watchtower' grows out of Space and the post-drums highlight for me is 'Attics of My Life', although there is a bit of static here and there..
A fun 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds', is the encore this night sending folks home with a smile.

I've had some requests for later day concerts, so here is a good one that is only 30 years old ;)
This was the first night of a three day run at Shoreline, and the band sounds as though they are happy to be there and playing well together! This is a fine recording as well, with only a few minor glitches. The first set has plenty of energy throughout, and while it is marred, in my opinion only with the inclusion of 'Easy Answers' the fabulous 'So Many Roads' more than makes up for it. They close with a smoking 'Promised Land' as well.

We continue this week with the concluding set from the band's performance on July 25, 1974 in Chicago, Illinois.
Things start out with a standalone 'Scarlet Begonias', including some very nice guitar work from Jerry, then they go into a really rockin' 'Big River. A sweet Roses follows with Jerry in good voice. Following 'Jack Straw' they go into one of the few '74 Dark Stars - this one quite cosmic - that goes deep into space land. Towards the end you can hear the 'Slipknot' theme, before they break into a sweet 'Stella Blue'.
A rockin' 'Johnny B. Goode' comes out of Stella, which leads into 'Uncle John's Band'. While not really a jamming song, this one has some very nice riffs and leads into 'US Blues'. While the show took place on Thursday, they close the set with 'One More Saturday Night'.
'Ship of Fools' is an unusual encore choice, but ends a very interesting evening of music.

Another great show from the summer of 1974 is up on the Deadpod this week, this one from July 25 in Chicago. This first set features 13 (!) songs - and sadly the opening 'Me & My Uncle' doesn't exist in listenable format! This set is typical tight, jazzy Dead of the period. A torrential rain accompanied the opening 'Box of Rain' on this second set of the band's performance in Washington DC on July 12, 1990. While the rain doesn't dampen spirits, they do go into a 'Victim or the Crime'. Luckily they follow that with the meat of this second set, a great 'Foolish Heart' into 'Dark Star' and Drums and Space into 'All Along the Watchtower'. In one of his last great performances we are treated to a wonderful 'Dear Mr. Fantasy'>'Hey Jude' combination, and then a rocking 'Touch of Grey' to close the set. The boys return with a fine version of 'The Weight' to send everyone home feeling fine.

My understanding is that it was raining hard most of this show but that did not stop the band, and Phil in particular, from smoking up the place with a great show. A nice 'Good Times' opens things up, but the band really gets going on a strong 'Bertha'. Brett shines as always on a great 'Just A Little Light' my favorite of his songs. Hard to believe its been 33 years since we lost him :(
Other highlights include a fine 'Stagger Lee' and a great 'Cassidy' - listen to the interplay here between Garcia and Lesh. Jerry really shines on 'Tennesse Jed' and the band puts together a fine 'Music Never Stopped' to head into the break..

This week's Deadpod came from a request from Tyler, a friend of the pod, who wanted to hear this classic summer stadium show from 1989. This is from Giants Stadium on July 9, 1989. The band is fired up and ready to satisfy what I'm sure was a loud and raucous crowd, opening with the classic 'Shakedown Street' and then an uptempo 'Jack Straw'. Things slow down a bit with 'West L.A. Fadeaway' then take a darker turn with the relatively new 'Victim or the Crime'. 'Brown-Eyed Women' and 'Queen Jane' straighten things back up, and they close this first set with a sweet 'Bird Song'.

This is a fine set the tone set by a fine opening 'Fire on the Mountain'. The 'Estimated' into 'Eyes of the World' is perhaps the highlight of the set with some particularly fine phrasing throughout. I've heard others say that one of the things they'd miss the most if they do stop touring is hearing 'Drums and Space' live... Again, an unusual opener, with a jazzy 'Playin' going into an intense 'Space Jam' - this one featuring the 'Happiness is Drumming' themes that later developed into 'Fire on the Mountain'. 'The Wheel' follows, with its own spacy elements, including some great Phil riffs, before going back into the 'Playin' reprise. The 'Samson' is strong, and the 'Eyes' pretty speedy for this period. This week we return to Deer Creek for the second set of the band's performance on June 9, 1991.
This second set opens with a scorching Scarlet>Fire.. the boys put it together here, with Jerry adding some nice flute-like touches and Hornsby pulling out the squeezebox during Fire.. one of the best of the year for sure. 'Truckin' follows, with an excellent closing jam into 'New Speedway Boogie' which had recently come out of retirement. Out of Space there is an excellent 'I Need A Miracle' which goes into a wonderful 'Standing on the Moon'. Jerry is wailing on the closing 'I'd rather be with you! ' and is obviously enjoying himself. The band puts it together for a rousing 'Sugar Magnolia' to close the set. 'The Weight' slows things down as they say good bye to Indiana for another year...

Summer is here, and it's time for a classic Summer show, this one from the Summer tour of 1991, a very good tour in my opinion.
This week I decided to share the first set of the show from June 7, 1991 at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana, a favorite stop on the latter day tour trail.
This set starts with a fine 'Half-Step', Jerry has a wonderful closing jam on this one. The Rooster that follows shows Vince doing some sampling on the Hammond organ. 'Stagger Lee', while far from my favorite Dead tune, is done with justice here. They really smoke 'Maggie's Farm', and I'm always appreciative of a good 'Loser' You'll hear Hornsby throughout this performance as some have complained he is too aggressive here, while I am still appreciative of what he brought to the sound.

For your Memorial Day weekend we have the second set of the band's performance on May 25, 1974 at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
After a rocking 'Promised Land' opener, and 'Ship of Fools' we are treated to a wonderful 'Big River' - Keith's piano work here is outstanding. The meat of this set however comes in the wonderful 'Truckin' that really showcases why this was a vehicle for some most excellent deep space explorations. Phil rattles some bones here, especially in the transition to 'Let It Grow'. Jerry has some great solos here in the 'Let It Grow' which slides perfectly into 'Wharf Rat'. An almost perfect 'Sugar Magnolia' follows, then leads into the 'GDTRFB' and, the obligatory, 'One More Saturday Night'.

We're stepping it up this week.. yes! believe it or not, this week's Deadpod is probably even hotter than last week's show from 1973! This one comes from May 25, 1974 at Santa Barbra California. A beautiful afternoon show that must have seemed to go on forever...
The first set starts with a U.S. Blues.. a great way to start a show and start this 13 song first set! The entire set is smoking hot, and it has a pedigree - as it comes from Dick Latvala's cassette, so the sound is great.
Some of the highlights include a wonderful 'Jack Straw', a stand alone 'Scarlet', Weir 'takes a bottle, cracks him in the jaw' on 'Me & My Uncle', but the true highlight of the set and probably the show is the mind-bending 'China Cat>I Know Your Rider' , in particular the great jamming in the transition - not to be missed. Billy K is on it..

This week we continue listening to the second set of the band's performance at Memorial Auditorium in Uttica New York on March 21, 1973.
As was the case last week, we have a very long set this week, around an hour and 43 minutes. This set features more jamming of course, including a jazzy 'Dark Star' marked with some fine drum rolls by Mr. Kreutzmann, a lovely 'Eyes of the World' and several classic songs from the period including 'Me & Bobby McGee'.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! As we roll into the first weekend in May, I wanted to bring out the customary tribute to the Kentucky Derby with a fine 'The Race Is On'. This show does that as well as pays homage to the new, fat, 'Here Comes Sunshine' release from Grateful Dead Productions (Here Comes Sunshine from Dead.net ). This show does both, although it takes place in early spring of 1973, rather than in May.
This is a huge show - the first set alone has 17 songs that take over one hour and forty minutes of prime Dead. There are too many highlights to mention. As most of you know I love the sound of the band during this period. I invite you to pay attention to Bill's work here - it really sparkles!
Of course there is 'The Race Is On', and a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. But I enjoy Donna on 'You Ain't Woman Enough', and just when you think that they must need a break after a fine 'China>Rider' they roll into a 15 minute 'Playin' In The Band' to close the set..

This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from the band's performance on April 15, 1988 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois.
The band is tight throughout on this night, starting from the opening Bucket, which goes into a very nice 'Crazy Fingers'. Garcia gives a lovely solo here, and it sets the mood for a reflective 'Looks Like Rain' which follows and on which Weir provides a lovely rendition. 'Terrapin Station' follows, and the boys rev this one up as that train pulls into the station! Drums and Space follows (probably with a bit of a cut somewhere here), followed by a slinkly 'Other One'. Bobby follows that with 'I Need a Miracle' which seems a bit out of place but Brent follows with the 'Dear Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude' combo which was performed quite often during this period. The 'Lovelight' that follows is a perfect counter coming out of that.
Jerry gives the crowd a wonderful encore with 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' to close the evening.

We are going to stick with the late 80's this week as we feature a show from the Rosemont Horizon on April 15, 1988.
I believe this is the only Scarlet>Fire opener the boys ever played, which immediately makes the radar go up that we're in for a good show. I don't think this one disappoints. Weir slows things a bit with a 'Walkin' Blues' but Jerry follows with the always favorite 'Candyman'. Brent then goes into an unusual bluesy 'Louie, Louie' which flows really nicely into the uptempo 'Cumberland Blues'
Weir sings the Dylan 'Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again' which goes into a nice uptempo 'Deal' to close the set.

Hey Now, this week we'll play the second set from the band's performance on April 7, 1987 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.
'Box of Rain' is the opener here, a rather unusual choice. A short 'I Need a Miracle' follows into 'Bertha'. 'Ship of Fools' slows things down, but they then go into another crowd favorite, 'Man Smart, Women Smarter' before going into a fairly lengthy drums and Space.
Out of Space, they bridge into 'Gimme Some Lovin' which then segues nicely into a fine 'Morning Dew'. A nice 'Throwing Stones' > 'Not Fade Away' combo closes the set but the band returns for a pleasing rendition of 'The Mighty Quinn'.

36 years ago the Grateful Dead played this week's show at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ, and also on the radio. This week's first set has some fine rocking although perhaps not alot of jamming. The boys start with 'Touch of Grey' played perhaps a touch too fast, but this goes into a nice 'Minglewood' with a strong Phil bass line, then Jerry sings a great 'Friend of the Devil'. There are seven beats to start the 'Beat It On Down the Line'. There is a nice keyboard solo in' Big River', and the 'West L.A. Fadeaway' is tight and funky. There is a double start in 'Hell In A Bucket' which starts for about a minute before Weir stops the band and wants to start over. Garcia gives some feedback before they eventually restart and play the song successfully...
