How does the sports card market crash impact what's going to happen?
Show #236 Vegas Dave vs Gary Vee - Will The Trading Card Market Crash??
2021/02/18
Info (Show/Hide)
Vegas Dave - the guy who bought the Mike Trout Superfractor for $400K and sold it a few years later for millions is saying the trading card market will collapse by 2024. In the same breath, he says he's holding David Carr trading cards for the next 2-5 years as well. He goes after Gary Vee - likely for views/attention (which I think is a good idea) in a video on YouTube found here: https://youtu.be/GBc5pZvsGaA We play clips of his take on the trading card market and I give you my thoughts on his opinions. Finally I give you a quick update on the status of the show going forward.
Show #235 10 Topics + Farewell For Now
2020/06/10
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show I talk about the NBA returning soon! The NFL draft and how I think this years RC class will compare to last years. We discuss how 2020 Topps Baseball product & cards have been on FIRE - despite the likelihood of no MLB season. I talk about selling on COMC, Amazon and eBay. GaryVee has taken a break from cards - is it because he's getting a divorce? Collectors seem angry - despite record card prices, I think it's because many are being priced out of their favorite hobby. The National was rescheduled - New Jersey in the winter might be worse than in the summer! Finally, I will likely not be posting many podcasts in the near future, I will tell you why.

We each give brief Amazon updates, since it’s paying most of the bills at the moment. We discuss the 2020 and 2021 National Sports Collectors Convention. There was discussion about buying Microsoft shares or 1986/87 Fleer basketball boxes - and why collectors have the wrong idea about which is a better ‘investment’.

2020/03/08
Info (Show/Hide)
On today’s show we discuss some of the new sets that have gone live including 2020 Topps Heritage and Optic Basketball. If you feel these sets are overpriced or out of your budget, I give you some tips on how to acquire the cards. Sports Cards are RED HOT!! Like stocks, homes or anything for that matter - it’s probably a good idea to be a SELLER in that type of market. I’ve seen some recent social media postings where people are confronting PACK SEARCHERS at Target/Wal-Mart. I tell you why that’s a REALLY BAD IDEA. The NFL draft is coming - I give you my prediction on what type of class it might be. Finally our main topic is GaryVee promotes the hobby on a daily basis - and is often criticized for it. I run down collectors WHO WANT HIM STOPPED and tell you what I think. As always, today’s podcast is sponsored by NO ONE! Enjoy!

Show #230 Setting A Hobby Budget + More
2020/02/16
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show I talk about setting a hobby budget - mainly because I saw a tweet last week that really made it evident people aren't doing this. Basically a guy said he could have bought a Jordan Auto and LeBron RC for how much he spent on breaks - instead he had base he didn't even want. So I walk you through the 3 steps to make sure this doesn't happen to you! Even if you've been collecting a long time, this episode is for you - but especially if you've just gotten back into the hobby or are starting for the 1st time. I then talk briefly about the Class Action Lawsuit against PSA/PWCC and more. Baseball season is coming soon. I give an update on my store and Amazon sales in 2020.

2019/10/04
Info (Show/Hide)
On today’s podcast, a company blow-hard threatens to sue Sports Card Radio AGAIN! Hint: He's threatened to sue me before!
NFL Rookies blow ass ... sort of. Lots of QB’s going down for the count Eli, Big Ben, Cam, Luck, Darnold, brees, Trubisky are all hurt or basically retired.
Did DA Card World scam me out of $600 of Topps Series 2 Jumbo Boxes??
I took a trip to Southern Hobby in Reno, I briefly tell you why I did so and how it was “cheaper” than having the items shipped.
I take a look at some top MLB players base Bowman Chrome rookie card prices. It’s going to give me a good idea what I can pay for up & coming players, and which one’s are already pricing in greatness.
Ronald Acuna $25
Pete Alonso $19 2006 BD
Judge $16 2013 BDPP
Carlos Correa 2013 $1
Mookie Betts 2014 $4
Juan Soto 2017 $5

Sell items that are replenish-able
Search for items out of stock
Expand to Canada
Apply for Seller Fulfilled Prime
Here is what we discuss about the Card Trimming
Greed will keep cycle rolling
PSA basically points finger at PWCC
High end cards is a small market
Show #221 More @Garyvee + Zion + Side Hustle vs Income
2019/05/17
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show we discuss a blog Garyvee posed to his website . We discuss the NBA Draft Lottery, that has Zion going to a team he won't likely have the opportunity to "go off" like Luka Doncic & other rookies have done. Nearly 100 more "trimmed slabs " have been uncovered since the last show ... stay tuned, more to come. I give you an Amazon update, what I have sold over the last 3 months - while NOT working on making sales. The numbers might surprise you. Finally, we want to make 2019 your best year ever. Just be sure to recognize the difference between a side hustle and a primary income source. Knowing the difference between the two can setup 2020, 2021 & beyond for you financially.

Show #215 What Does The Guarantee On The Back Of Cards Mean?
2018/08/20
Info (Show/Hide)
All the major card makers have some sort of “Guarantee” on the back of autograph & memorabilia trading cards. For example on the back of one Tyler Eifert autograph/jersey card I have it states: “The enclosed event-worn material and autograph are guaranteed by Panini America Inc” However, upon searching the internet for this guarantee, I could only find reference to Panini Authentic items (which are typically memorabilia like basketball, shoes, etc - not trading cards). Don’t most companies put their “guarantees” in writing? Just search the internet for companies you know that guarantee something - and you’ll find a place on the their website which describes the circumstances the guarantee applies to. If Panini puts the autograph sticker on upside-down - does the guarantee apply? If Dak Prescott (allegedly) has cards stolen from him that are then auto-penned and sold online - does the “guarantee” apply then? Is the guarantee for the authenticity of the autograph - or for the quality - or both? How am I supposed to know when Panini (and likely other companies) don't state this on a website? We discuss this topic and more.
Show #214 @SportsCardNews From The 2018 NSCC
2018/08/02

There's a line out the door, VIP tickets are sold out - but dealers, employees and those working the show are hot under the collar. Ryan describes some heated moments at the Topps Booth - and the Blowout Sports Cards booth. Problem for them, there's a long list of hobby "insiders" who have fallen on hard times directing heat at Sports Card Radio. We discuss trashing on Mike Smeth from Cardboardconnection, Mark Sapir at Topps, Josh Cade (Uber Driver), Breakers, and more.

Finally we discuss having balance in your collecting life - so you don't all-out quit and leave the hobby forever.
Show #212 Ohtani John + Trout Values + NBA
2018/06/13
Info (Show/Hide)
There are a few sports card podcasts that have either re-booted or just started. One is the Mojobreak podcast, the other is About The Cards. On today’s show we discuss what will happen to 2018 Topps Baseball products now that it appears Ohtani is likely out for the season. I play a clip from a previous show that predicted the future. Mike Trout is one of the best baseball players of all time - what will happen to his card values over time? Which cards will be the most collectible even after he plays? We then briefly discuss the NBA draft & offseason.
Show #211 NFL Draft Recap + Ohtani Hype + NBA Prospects + More
2018/04/27
Info (Show/Hide)
The Sports Card Show Podcast returns from a few months off, I explain what I’ve been up to. (8:30 Time Mark) The 1st round of the 2018 NFL Draft happened the night I recorded this podcast, so I talk about the 5 QB’s that were selected. (35:40 Time Mark) Angles’ Pitcher/Hitter Shohei Ohtani is playing like a mega-star and his baseball cards are on fire - with gasoline poured on top. I’ve seen MANY hot prospects in my days ranging from Will Clark, Ken Griffey Jr, Ichiro, Albert Pujols, Derek Jeter, Mike Trout …. ect - Ohtani’s cards are reaching levels we’ve never seen before. I talk about the people that could stand to make a lot of money this season in the baseball card market - and I don’t think it will be the people who are trying to pull his cards. (48:12 Time Mark) I talk about how I’m going to prospect some NBA cards over the summer since most people will be on Ohtani and other stuff. (57:57 Time Mark) I talk about Brian Gray (Leaf Trading Cards) un-blocking me on Twitter. Finally I talk about how I don’t invest 100% of my assets in the stock market recently and why.

Show #209 New Years Resolutions + Conferences + $2.35M Transcendent + More
2017/12/24
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's podcast we discuss the 3 sports card "manufacture" conferences that will be happening during the first two months of the year. Upper Deck, Topps and Beckett will be holding these conferences - which one should you go to if any? Topps recently released 2017 Topps Transcendent Baseball, a product with a $27,000 price tag. Given there are 87 boxes made - that means Topps is asking the card community to fork over $2.35M during a time when we are buying gifts for others (or yourself like me haha). I think a product like this can be a regular release, however Topps' timing could be improved. During our annual New Year's Resolutions segment, I hand out advice for Panini, Topps, and Upper Deck for 2018. Finally on our Make America Great Again segment, I discuss my process to finding good stocks, I give you some podcasts I listen to and we discuss how you can make the new tax bill work for you.
Show #208 High End Player Worn + Leaf Goofs Again + COMC + ECON101
2017/11/30
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show we discuss a few topics as we approach the holiday gift giving season. First we discuss the Player Worn vrs Game Worn. While this is a discussion we've had before, "high end" expensive products are seeing far more player worn material cards than ever before. Is this a good direction for the hobby to go down? How does this impact new collectors? What can the card companies do to explain this better to new collectors?
Next we discuss Brian Gray from Leaf Trading Card's appearance on Beckett Radio. Gray said some things that contradict his claim that he can authenticate an athlete's signature from a distant photo on eBay. Gray's request to appear on the Sports Card Show Podcast was ignored, and he's actually fortunate we did so - because we would have pressed him on his ridiculous statements, unlike the other podcast hosts that come & go in this hobby.
Next we talk about COMC and some of the small changes they've made. We discuss how there appears to be no slowdown in site traffic/sales - which we said wouldn't slow down after some minor fee increases. We are anticipating more robust fee changes sometime in 2018 and I speculate how you can take advantage of those changes.
Our Make America Great Again segment is really an ECON101 lesson. It's painfully obvious the vast majority of the country has very little idea about Economics, which is more of a stain on the educational system - which will teach you finger painting & basket weaving - before how to actually analyze the economy. I talk about some of the myths about the economy and who you should listen to if you want advice. Being financially stable is a goal of almost anyone I meet - unfortunately most of you don't listen to the right sources on how to achieve this, which is why you won't be successful unless you change your mindset - or get help.
Show #207 Prizm Crash + 2018 NFL Draft + Staying Positive
2017/11/17
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's podcast we touch on a wide variety topics around the sports card world and in the world of politics.
First we discuss all the new card sets being released on a daily basis during the last half of the year. It's honestly got to be really hard to manage your cash flow - no matter if you are a dealer or a collector with this many releases coming out. I honestly think it would be wise to specialize in a particular niche - and look to expand into markets that require less cash-flow management like the new card market requires.
I purpose that there be some kind of Group Break Trade Association. Pretty much every industry has one, from Fantasy Sports, to the NRA - like minded people can come together often for the common good. I think group breakers could join forces and create standardize rules & possibly make it a better experience for the consumers who buy into breaks.
I give a quick update on my Amazon, eBay and COMC account sales. Honestly I'm saving most of this discussion for my new podcast at PowerSellingRadio.com - so check it out if you haven't already. I should have another podcast posted later this month.
2017/18 Panini Prizm first off the line NBA baseball box sales literally made Panini's website crash because there was so much demand. While I think the demand was a good sign for Panini - and the basketball card market in general, I saw a lot of negative reaction on Twitter & the Blowoutcard Forums of people who were rightfully frustrated with the buying experience. I share my idea for Panini next time they think they could have this kind of demand - and how it could lead to more sales & less frustration from collectors.
Sports Card Radio hired a full time employee. He's doing a great job - if you've noticed 3-4 new articles are being posted each day. That should continue for the foreseeable future.
2018 Football should be really good. I fully anticipate Josh Rosen from UCLA being the #1 QB on the board, followed by Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, and Sam Darnold. I see a scenario where all 4 QB's could be selected in the top 10 picks - and possibly in the top 5 if there aren't any other impact players on the board (I honestly am not sure). It should lead to very strong sales of 2018 NFL football cards because I could see each QB being valued at over $100 each for autographs.
Lastly, our Make America Great Again segment, I talk about how you can follow the negative news on Trump .... or decide that you are going to make the most of the things you can. His tax reform bill (if passed) could honestly make you wealthy if you listen to the right people. Remember - 95% of Barack Obama's income gains benefited the 1% . You really think Donald Trump will be any different?? That means you can benefit if you know how to think/act like the 1%. If you only read/digest the negative news, I'm willing to bet you will see those negative things happen to you. Only you decide your outcome, not Donald Trump.
Show #206 Beckett & Leaf Spread #FakeNews About NBA Superstar
2017/10/13
Info (Show/Hide)
On today’s show we have a very special guest - Ryan from @SportsCardNews. When he comes on the show outside his annual appearance during the National Sports Collectors Convention … you know something BIG has happened. Something so stupid and preposterous, that we have to bring him on the show to discuss it.
Recently NBA superstar and rapper Damian Lillard was on Twitter proclaiming an autograph a seller was offering was indeed fake. Lillard commented on the social media platform twitter via his account with over 1 million followers that the autograph in question was fake TWICE. It’s rare to have an athlete respond to fans, let alone about an autograph being real or fake. Lillard did this TWICE in one day regarding the same item.
Then Beckett Authentication Services (BAS) and Leaf Trading cards had the audacity to claim Lillard was wrong about his own signature. Beckett even asked Lillard via the social media platform to take A THIRD LOOK at the item! The following day, both Beckett AND Leaf spread the #FakeNews that Lillard had deleted the two tweets where he claimed the autos were fake. In fact Lillard DID NOT delete the tweets - it was the seller of the (fake) autograph (Joel Alpert) who deleted his tweet with a link to the item!
On today’s show - consider this a declaration of war against this ignorant and arrogant card manufactures and “authenticators” that think they know a signature better than the man himself. This podcast serves as the initial shot across the bow against their LIES & DECEPTION! We are SICK AND TIRED of these companies thinking they can spread false claims across this hobby, and we feel this does the hobby harm.
Get ready for an explicit laced show where we BLAST Beckett, Leaf, Joel Alpert and more.
Show #205 Panini's First + Topps Better + Amazon & COMC Update
2017/08/30
Info (Show/Hide)
Initially I thought this would be a shorter show, ended up being about the same length as usual. Talk about Panini's "First Off The Line" offering. Topps Baseball has been on FIRE! Almost all releases are out of stock at distributors - showing strong demand across the board. I hit $10,000+ in Amazon sales in only my 2nd full month selling. Why I think September will be flat or lower. My COMC account I started in June 2015 with $100 has 40% cash. The white jewish media had you all up in arms about 'white on white' crime .... but what about all the black on black crime? I started a new podcast about online marketing & selling products online - check it out at www.powersellingradio.com
Show #204 @SportsCardNews From The 2017 NSCC
2017/07/30
Info (Show/Hide)
The annual tradition continues! On today’s show we talk to Ryan @SportsCardNews about the 2017 National Sports Collectors Convention being held in Chicago, IL. The show is JAMED packed this year and it seems like sports cards is really in a good place with collectors around the country. You’d think breakers, dealers, and shops would be rolling in the money because of all the customers pouring through the doors - but many are facing challenges of scaling up their business beyond where it’s been the last few years. One company that has a scalable business model is COMC - and it seems like they are still expanding at a rate that isn’t experienced by many in this industry. We discuss some of the stuff going on their and how we are bullish on that websites future. We discuss the Dak Prescott auto-pen situation, and have reliable sources confirming where the auto-pen actually came from. Hint: you might want to take a closer look at your Tony Romo & Troy Aikman “autographs”. We discuss how group breakers seem stuck in the slow lane - and how we predicted that business model has a ceiling that is nearly impossible to break through. We each give an update on Amazon FBA sales. Hint: they are explosive. I tell you what I’m going to buy with my Amazon FBA profits in a few months. Hint: not a piece of cardboard with a man’s photo on it. We take multiple victory laps about calls we’ve made about the stock market, Aaron Judge being good, different sports card business models failing, Panini’s “VIP” party featuring paper plates & napkins. etc. Overall, the hobby seems to be experiencing the effects of a healthy economy & job market, but few dealers (outside the vintage only guys & COMC) really seem to be cashing in big time. One thing is for sure - we’ll be seeing you all again next year so enjoy this annual tradition.
Show #203 Auto-Panini Dak Prescott Scandal + Amazon FBA Updates
2017/07/11
Info (Show/Hide)
This week we discuss the Dak Prescott "Auto Pen" scandal involving Panini America. We discuss the language in contracts signed by other Panini signers - and why it places all responsiblity on Panini. We discuss why Dak Prescott might have done this, and why it might not make sense to have used an auto-pen. Beckett Grading certainly comes out smelling like roses, as they essentially turned away business for the sake of authenticating. Later on in the show I give you an Amazon FBA update - including the first few hours of Amazon Prime Day. If this is any preview of how the holidays will go, it's going to be an explosive Christmas season for me selling on Amazon. I discuss my trip to Las Vegas, blocking Panini butt kissers on Twitter, and more.
Show #202 Time To Move Back Home With Mom - COMC Raised Fees
2017/06/29
Info (Show/Hide)
Today's show highlights COMC's recent fee changes. Some fees went up, some actually went down. It demonstraits a shift in the market COMC is trying to go after. The company has a massive moat around their 'low-end' card business - it's unlikely any challenger will emerge to take that business away from them. So in order to capture the market COMC has less of (higher-end cards) the company has adjusted fees to encourage/discourage certain cards from being sent in. We discuss if the alternatives are better, or if paying the extra 20% to list a card is worth it. We discuss why liberal politicians in Washington state might be to blame. I discuss why anyone with any investment savvy would salivate over COMC's business model - but scoff at UD/Topps/Panini/Leaf's business. I give an Amazon FBA update. I update my $100 COMC card sales. I try to encourage all these guys living at home with mom to get some new skills and earn more money. I'm doubtful many are capable of pulling that off - but I tried.

Anyone looking to expand their online money making empire should listen up since there’s lots of good info in this podcast.

Blowout cards was hacked and their reaction was typical. Panini left patrons of the Industry Summit hanging with no black boxes. Show #195 Cardboardconnection.com "CEO" Mike Smeth Scandal
2016/08/09
Info (Show/Hide)
@SportsCardNews and Colin make a RARE back2back appearance on the Sports Card Show Podcast. You know something HUGE must have happened for us to interrupt our summer for more sports card talk.[caption id="attachment_6357" align="alignnone" width="300"] Mike Smeth Owner Of Cardboardconnection.com[/caption]This time it comes from website cardboardconnection.com. The owner/self proclaimed "CEO" of the website is Michael Smeth, aka Mike Smeth. Apparently for a few years he's been stalking victims online, including Panini's own Tracy Hackler! ----> READ FULL EXPLOSIVE DETAILS
Show #194 @SportsCardNews From The NSCC (Explicit)
2016/08/05
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show we break down the collector demographic that made the trek all the way out to Atlantic City to attend the show. We talk about COMC's upcoming plans after Ryan spoke with Tim on the show floor. We discuss the Topps meeting held with collectors. Group breakers are discussed. High rolling in vegas and to Pearl Jam concerts. The owner of Cardboard Connection offered us gas money 2 years ago - now is too broke to attend the event. His booth sits empty while former employees work for competeting companies. Needless to say a full victory lap is in order when a clown like this GOES BROKE. LOL
Show #193 UDs NBA Bid + COMC's About To Dominate + BreakerCulture.com
2016/07/19
Info (Show/Hide)
Breaker Culture Website provides reviews & rankings of group breakers.
Upper Deck makes a bid on the NBA license. I discuss how the landscape could change with 2 licensees ... or possibly Upper Deck getting a small piece of an NBA license.
SportsCardRadio.com gets daily hits on its website for people looking for 2016 Topps Football. Obviously the news that Panini has the exclusive NFL trading card license for the next (presumably) 10 years hasn't trickled down to all collectors yet. My guess is very few people who casually buy cards know about this yet.
Listener shows 1 day flip on COMC/ebay . Bought the card for $1 on COMC - then sold it later in the day on eBay (via COMC) for $8. And now has to do nothing else but figure out how to spend the money. Let other collectors complain/worry about COMC's customer service while you scoop the money bags that are laying on the ground.
Money Flowing to COMC from eBay sales will have a big impact on the hobby - as long as 20% cashout fee stays in place. In order to get top dollar in the future - you will need to sell into COMC's ecosystem. Almost all eBay sales money flows into PayPal accounts - which can easily be transferred, spent & withdrawn to use for many other things than cards. COMC account balances are different because the money can only be spent on cards, blowout or cash with a 20% penalty. This will leave COMC sellers in a very lucrative position when all this eBay money (that used to go to PayPal) is now sitting in COMC accounts where the #1 cashout option is to buy more cards. Anyone not selling into this ecosystem won't get top dollar unless it's a premium/hot card - which are rare these days.
Show #192 8 Years + NBA Summer League + Upper Deck + COMC
2016/07/14
Info (Show/Hide)
8 Years have gone by since the 1st Sports Card Show podcast. Glad to still be around the hobby and thanks to everyone that has tuned in over the years.
Upper Deck's Digital/Physical Card Set
- It's called Upper Deck Fusion and it only costs $0.79 per pack.
- Trade cheaper Fusion for S1/S2 young guns??
Ben Simmons Signs Exclusive with Upper Deck
- In a cock-block move Upper Deck signs the #1 overall pick to an exclusive deal. If the Lakers' Brandon Ingram and other players don't emerge, Panini's NBA products could really suffer slow year 1 sales.
2016 National Sports Collectors Convention
First COMC eBay sales
- Sales data seemed to be imported into your seller dashboard over in a 1 hour(ish) window.
- Sold 3 cards so far. One card I wasn't the lowest price on the site, which is one advantage of the cross-listing feature is that sellers like me might not have to adjust to the lowest price.
Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors
NBA Summer League has been going in Orlando & Las Vegas. This is a really good time to get a look at NBA prospects that you can target to purchase during the 16/17 NBA Season. Last season I really like Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers - and he had a really nice rookie season.
Held for the Pelicans can pull his own shot.
Brandon Ingram reminds me of a young Kevin Durant body-wise & footwork. His defense ability is better than Durant's.
Zubac of the Lakers is a young center with very good footwork. Expect fans to bid his cards up in year one.
Jared Goff's mom is buying his cards off eBay. Here's the thread on blowout about it.
Show #191 8 Random Topics
2016/06/24
Today we go round the world in about 50 minuets. We talk about the events in Orlando. BREXIT. Lightly discuss the NBA draft. The opening of the NFL season. We discuss Panini Instant. I discuss scaling down your collection. And redemption substitutions. We'll be back next month full strength but wanted to sneak a show in here.
Show #190 Check Out My Cards On eBay
2016/06/09
Last week COMC announced it will begin cross listing items on eBay. That should likely make COMC the largest seller of trading cards on eBay once they fully ramp up. A new fee structure and other changes should occur - but selling your cards essentially across three channels (COMC, Amazon, eBay) is pretty cool. We discuss this and other broader ecommerce topics.
Show #189 Selling Direct Era Is Here + NFL Draft + More
2016/05/01
Info (Show/Hide)
Back in August 2013 on Show #136 I suggest how companies need to start selling direct to the consumer more. Recently Topps announced it was pulling the pre-orders for 2016 Topps Finest Baseball and I believe this is only the beginning. ToppsNOW and other aspects of Topps distribution will be directly to the consumer. I discuss the NFL draft. We discuss some of the listings/cards you can buy & resell.
Show #188 Panini Buyout Explained + Tax Issues + NFL Prospecting
2016/03/07
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show I explain the Panini Group Buyout rumors that are swirling in Italy. Don't be fooled, this will effect the American business - and many feel it already has. The deal hinges on the company getting a bank to extend them a whopping $170 million line of credit. A listener e-mailed in with tax questions. There's a really good thread about it here . Finally I run down the QB/WR/RB's I like and don't like leading up to the NFL draft.
Show #187 Get Your Shill On + Panini Raising The Price + Industry Summit
2016/02/23
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show we touch on the Mastro Auctions shill bidding case & how you should avoid these scam houses for the time being. Panini raised prices to dealers 1.5%. What are some vintage players worth buying not named Mantle, Ruth or Mays? What is a true Rookie Card? Or more specifically - what rookie cards would I collect if I was looking to buy my favorite baseball player/prospect. Finally we touch a bit on the 2016 Industry Summit which this year is being held in beautiful Hawaii.
Show #186 Listener Questions On COMC + Vintage Cards + Investing Ideas + More
2016/02/10
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's 1hr+ show we go through a wide range of topics. First I give you an update on my COMC portfolio that I started with $100 dollars about 6 months ago. I discuss the SRP pricing on COMC thanks to a listener question. Other listener question topics include: Where to get investing ideas and buying selling vintage cards. Touch briefly on the auction house shill bidding scandal, more on that to come in a future show.
Show #185 COMC Delivers Life To Upper Deck, ePack Concept
2016/01/29
Info (Show/Hide)
Upper Deck looked like the garage sale was in full effect with a $15,000 set that is mostly manufactured patches. However, they bounced back - in what might be the 21st century style garage sale with a web application that allows you to open packs of card digitally - and then redeem certain ones physically via COMC. The funny thing was, I've discussed similar ideas with Tim from COMC as far back as 2013 ... so it was cool actually seeing one of his concepts actually come to light.
2015 Donruss Signatures football is another terrible Panini football product. It's going to be a brutal year from a re-sellers standpoint this season, I can imagine many people are going to be forced out of business - or simply will just move on to more profitable ventures,
Show #184 Upper Deck's $15k Garage Sale & More
2016/01/23
Info (Show/Hide)
The sun is shining here in California, but apparently most of the east coast is covered in snow so we've got a small show here for everyone that needs some entertainment for the day. Arizona Diamondback pitcher & baseball card collector Brad Ziegler was accused of shill bidding auctions on ebay. A California lawmaker wants to essentially add an extra layer of cost to legitimate autograph dealers ... a move that only hurts the guys doing it right. Upper Deck released a $15,000 set where one of the main hits is a sport bike that was used by Michael Jordan Motorsports ... and not actually by the man himself. Upper Deck tried selling the 2008 bike back in 2012 without any success. Sure feels like a garage sale going on at Upper Deck.
Show #183 Group Breaking Industry Audit & Suggestions
2016/01/09
Info (Show/Hide)
After trading in my DFS twitter timeline for my @SportsCardRadio timeline, I still saw some chatter about how group breaking is going to take the hobby to new heights. Something I've been hearing for several years now. I decided to take a look at the websites of well known, and lesser know breakers I could find the other day - and saw an industry that is far from thriving. In fact, I believe the health of group breaking as a business model might not be as healthy as much maligned LCS (local card shops). There was also a lack of testimonials, pictures of the breakers themselves, and the websites of most breakers show a business model that is not spitting off much free cash for re-investment into the business. On today's show, I give some suggestions and a state of the industry, which isn't moving nearly as fast & many believe it is.
Show #182 New Year Of The Same Old

Got some interesting topics from listeners to talk about on today's show. We discuss grading & flipping cards. I touch on a little bit more COMC advice. Also give some tips if you have a large collection (or amount of cards) you are trying to sell. Got some people mad on Twitter after posting a picture of a jam-packed card store. Show #170 Topps Doing Group Breaks + Fake Diamonds + More
2014/12/28
Info (Show/Hide)
Been away for about a month so there's a mix of news that we cover on today's show. 2014 Topps Chrome Football taught anyone that didn't know already that Topps makes products 'to order' ... so if everyone orders it - the product ends up being a dud. Looks like Topps is doing group breaks now ... just like I predicted they would years ago. Topps Dynasty Baseball contained a Don Mattingly card with an Angels patch in it. The diamonds in Panini Flawless cards might not be real. COMC now has auctions. Plus I give out some sleeper NBA talent and some advice on selling your cards.
2014 Panini Flawless Football Scam (Explicit)
2014/11/21
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show I blast off more on the 2014 Panini Flawless cards that Panini's CEO Mark Warsop originally called "mistakenly labeled." We now know more cards are effected and it's clear Panini didn't mislabel all these cards. Instead of taking ownership of it, they've tired to pass this off as a "mistake" or a vendor issue - BUT IN FACT IT'S PANINI LYING TO YOUR FACE. They knowingly made these cards, knowingly put game used on them. Someone needs to get fired and Panini will need to EARN MY TRUST BACK. I'm not going to just ass-slap them just because they make cards and neither should you.
Show #168 Flaws In Flawless? Panini News & Business ... Again
2014/11/18
Info (Show/Hide)

Second is a thread about the business end of cards and I give you my thoughts on both. Panini is releasing a Donruss Baseball factory set, and find out what inside is making collectors upset. Panini signed a deal the Texas University and COMC black Friday sales have started.
Show #167 Just Another Week In The Hobby
2014/11/10
Info (Show/Hide)
There's a new podcast about cards out there if you haven't heard called "Trading Card Preservation" and can be found on iTunes & heartbreakingcards.com . Panini is charging customers to ship items on the "rewards" website. Topps & others have very flimsy "game-used" language on cards these days. National Treasures to have Barry Bonds and Kris Bryant. Will Alibaba buy ebay and/or PayPal soon? Box prices for 2013/14 NBA Basketball cards and 2013 Football are all down from original price. Does the Hobby have a supply/demand issue?

Show #161 @SportsCardNews Interview From 2014 NSCC
2014/08/01
Info (Show/Hide)
Today our interview guest is @SportsCardNews from the 2014 National Sports Collectors Convention. We talk about the new 10 year NFLPA exclusive licence Panini secured ... and who you really should direct your anger towards (guess what: it's not Panini or the NFLPA). We talk about how it's been crickets at the Group Breaking Pavilion with guys struggling to sell through breaks. I even have felt bad watching some of these breakers blow over $10,000 on an event that won't yield them any new business. We talk about the National, Twitter stock, XPO Stock & more.

Show #159 Rumor Has It Panini Is Exclusive + VIP + Daily Fantasy
2014/07/22
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show we talk about the rumor that has been swirling around the hobby - and that's Panini getting an exclusive NFLPA license to make football cards. I talk about who's tweets in the industry often foreshadow events like this. I also discuss a recent Topps employee calling the company "cash strapped" and one being fired for being "late." We discuss what Panini should have done with the money they (potentially) used to gain an exclusive license.
On the second half of the show we talk about the Panini VIP Party at the National ... and how a dealer/breaker could have spent the money in a more effective fashion. Lastly, by request we talk a bit about Daily Fantasy Sports. DraftKings & DraftStreet merged last week .... possibly leading to larger player & prize pools for daily fantasy players this season.
Show #158 @CardFatherX Interview Recap Show
2014/07/12
We recap the Josh Cade @CardFatherX interview. I'm still confused about Josh "being a boy or being a girl" ... or "what seems like and what is are two different things" but I try to clear up some things listeners may have missed since Josh Cade didn't seem so open to discuss what really goes on his webcam each night.
Show #157 Josh Cade @CardFatherX Group Break Razz + Filler Interview
2014/07/11
Josh Cade conducts Raffles, Razzes, "Fillers" and breaks on his webcam. He invited me to lunch at the National .... I declined, mainly because at the world's largest card show, meeting a male webcammer isn't high on my list. He asked to call me on the phone. I said sure, but we would have to record it. He agreed. Enjoy.
Show #156 Group Breaker Crystal Ball + Topps Hires + More
2014/07/02
Info (Show/Hide)
The Golden Age of being a group breaker is about to end.
I'm not saying group breaking is going away, actually it will become apart of the sports card collecting fabric even more as we move on ... but that will make it harder to become a breaker yourself.
Don't worry though, "Golden Ages" exist in all kinds of businesses, just feel glad you were around (and possibly) profited when the money was easy. In a few years you all will look back and remember how easy it was to be a breaker, and how much easier it was to make a profit.
Here are the things I think that will cut into breaker profits over the next 5 years.
1 - Red Tape. Things like allocations, Upper Deck selling only to Hobby Shops, Panini & Topps deciding to charge more to breakers, or only sell to certain ones are all example of current 'red tape' and this list will only grow further as we move on into the future.
2 - Margins go down. These are going to continue to be eaten away - mainly by the red tape issues you have to deal with above.
3 - Blowout, DA and now Beckett are group breaking. They have marketing channels that dwarf all other breakers combined. They have the ability to make it difficult for the average breaker to get product at a price low enough to offer to customers.
4 - The trend is for many breakers to open a hobby shop, or buy expensive real estate at the National or Industry Summit. Those are added costs, and further make the cost to do business almost impossible for the 'little guy' to compete with.
5 - Panini, Topps, Upper Deck ... ect could start partnering - or cause group breakers to be 'authorized' in the future, which would be further red tape and make it difficult for a new breaker.
Finally we talk about a recent hiring at Topps, and we discuss this months product in the 1st segment.

Show #154 El Samba + Cover Your QR + Topps Call + More
2014/06/18
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show I talk about the World Cup matches I've been able to watch over the last week.
A while back Panini sold 1/1 Panini Prizm Pylon cards via their own website - now they have started their own eBay account and are selling 1/1 "El Samba" 2014 Panini Prizm World Cup cards .
We talked about Panini Rewards on the last show, and they are starting to filter onto ebay. One thing I noticed is that sellers are exposing the QR code in the auction (which allows someone to claim the points) - so you'll only want to bid on the sellers who blackout the QR code. If you sell any of these cards, cover up the QR code in your auction, otherwise you'll have to issue refunds.
The last week or so saw some new product announcements including 13/14 Panini National Treasures Basketball .
I talk about a conference call I had with Topps a week or so ago. Plus a few more topics!

Show #149 2014 Las Vegas Industry Summit Recap Show
2014/04/07
Info (Show/Hide)
I recap the 2014 Industry Summit in Las Vegas: http://sportscardradio.com/news/1673-2014-las-vegas-industry-summit-from-the-sofa
Panini Rewards
Panini's trying something new .... can't fault them for that! Personally, I see this as a brilliant business move if they stick to it. Long term, Panini now rids the obligation to get a particular player to sign a particular card.
Why is that so important for panini?
Panini (and other companies) go to great lengths to get players to sign cards. There are travel costs, logistic costs, customer service costs ... not to mention the actual manufacturing costs & what the athlete charges.
Now they can focus on the players & cards that are easier to obtain.
Additionally, top players like Adrian Peterson, Colin Kaepernick, LeBron James, Jordan .... ect sign deals with other companies that makes it difficult (if not impossible) to get guys to sign. Often times companies insert an autograph redemption in a product before they even know if AND when the player will sign.
Now panini just will give you points. They know a certain % will never be used - just like a redemption card for a player - but now they aren't on the hook for a particular card/set/player .... which should mean less headaches for Panini.

Show #147 @LittleKingRadio Interview + Risk Factor Rant
2014/02/13
Info (Show/Hide)
Before you listen to today's show - I strongly encourage you to check out a few folks I have been following the last month or so.
First: BallCardsRadio.comOne of the most entertaining sports cards podcasts to debut in a while. Hosted by @LittleKingRadio - this young guy has great knowledge and interesting guests on his show each week. We interview Ryan on today's show - The interview occurs around the 47:15 time mark.
Second: watchthebreaks YouTube - Here is a playlist of the video series: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLje6UXzEHq0UGIqJvv9yhTE-h2mQ5tt1N These are awesome! They look like they would take a while to produce - I encourage you all to watch them, and encourage him to do more these, I think they are very well done.
During the 1st half of the show I rant and rave a bit about if group breaking is legal, and DA Card World taking down illegal raffles.
Show #146 Desperate Times For Industry Summit + Getting Rid of Base + Raffles are Illegal
2014/02/03
Info (Show/Hide)
On today's show we talk about how the actions of a few 'companies' in this hobby in recent weeks have showed how desperate they are for customers and/or profits.
Industry Summit bans yours truly & Brian Gray from Leaf because of some things said at last years Industry Summit. You know you are getting desperate when you care about what is said to only a few hundred collectors (at most).
I've said this before - if all your customers are coming from Twitter or YouTube videos - you'll be broke in no time.
DA Card World is showing how desperate they are for customers by running illegal raffles , 7 months after I clowned on the idiots who were doing them last year.
One reason why people in this hobby are so sensitive recently might be because cards aren't selling. Here are the new wholesale prices for 2013 Panini Football boxes vs the original ones - OUCH!!
Absolute Football $75 vs $129
Limited $48 vs $80
Momentum $89 vs $159
Playbook $89 vs $160
Rookies & Stars $50 vs $76
Select $67 vs $112
Certified $60 vs $80
Finally, I talk about if companies should get rid of base cards - or if there is a way you as a seller could promote the purchase of them.
Finally I finish by telling you it's wise to save your money!
Show #145 Collector Interview With @thatDanRoe
2014/01/13

Show #144 Just My Opinion Card Manufactures + Beckett + Leaf + Hit Parades
2013/12/20
Info (Show/Hide)
What show isn't just my opinion??? Well, most of them are, so I guess this is nothing new. On today's show, we talk about how Panini, Topps, Upper Deck ... ect all tend to blame 'ebay' or 'the internet' for some of the reasons why people don't collect cards today. Instead of blaming them - why didn't Topps or another company setup their own marketplace to sell/trade cards?? Why blame them when they could have joined them? We also talk about Leaf's recent tweets, Beckett's new services and DA Card Worlds Hit Parade packs.
