Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake was the keynote speaker at the Allegheny Conference's Our Next 75 Summit yesterday charging up an audience of more than 1,000 people to embrace diversity, challenge the status quo and to not be afraid to create something new. Caterina Fake co-founded the websites Flickr in 2004 and Hunch in 2011. Fake has been a trustee of multiple nonprofit organizations, and was the chairwoman of Etsy. For her role in creating Flickr, Fake was listed in Time magazine's Time 100. Fake currently runs Yes VC and spins up the "Should This Exist?" podcast. Her energy and enthusiasm for breaking down barriers is contagious and comes right out in this interview with the Pittsburgh Technology Council's Jonathan Kersting and Gina Winstead. Fake talks about simple, yet powerful ways to get more women and people of color into Pittsburgh's growing tech industry. Last night, the Beauty Shoppe opened its latest co-working facility in Downtown Pittsburgh's Pitt Building. The Pittsburgh Technology Council (PTC) announced finalists for the 2018 Pittsburgh Tech 50 Awards on TechVibe Radio.

The PTC’s annual Tech 50 Awards recognize southwestern Pennsylvania’s most successful, innovative, and thought-leading technology companies, which have become the backbone of Pittsburgh’s innovation economy. According the PTC’s annual State of the Industry Report, southwestern Pennsylvania’s tech industry accounts for more than 23 percent of the workforce with more than 9,900 technology establishments.

Started in 1997, the awards represent transformative technology centers of excellence with tech companies at all stages of growth. Tech 50 also recognizes the region’s top tech executives. A new Artificial Intelligence/Robotics category was added this year to more formally recognize this emerging tech cluster.
