Animal Party Episode 210 From Fish Shops to Foster Homes: A Global Look at Cat Culture
2025/04/03
Info (Show/Hide)
Deborah Wolfe chats with Deborah Cribbs from www.givethemten.org about the cat situation in different places including Turkey, Tunisia, Europe and America, and how the general attitude toward stray or street cats differs. Do you let your cats have an indoor life only, or an outdoor life only or maybe they get to come and go when they want. Different cultures are at play here and in Tunisia Deborah Cribbs described how kittens were often dropped off at the local fish store to fend for themselves. Wolfe adds cat facts including a description of why people are allergic to cats and describes dog allergy trials for perspective owners of doodles or poodles (the hypoallergenic breeds) and that’s when Deborah Cribb made a fantastic suggestion; if you think you have a family member with a pet allergy but it seems to be with only some cats or some pets and you aren’t sure….you can foster a pet! Right, your family, and the kids especially, know the pet is there temporarily, but you get a chance to test that pet fully and if no allergies manifest you can adopt.
Deb Wolfe suggests for families who want to give a cat or kitten as a Christmas gift wrap a stuffed animal or figurine like the pet your kids are begging for and then add a homemade gift card for one to be selected from a shelter. Go to the shelter after the bustle and unpredictability of the holidays is done and the house is calm and decorations are put away. Once spring hits in North America, Cribbs says its kitten season so if that’s what you are looking for that’s when you’ll have many cutie kittens to pick from.

Did you know that what you do when a bear attacks is totally different from what you should do if a moose charges? Plus, there are safe times and safe places to choose for your adventures and you can learn some very easy to apply tricks for picking the right time and place for hikes and camping.
We all have to pick our battles when it comes to getting along with people and sometimes with our pets too and Deborah has chosen not to battle her dogs over her crock like ‘dawg’ shoes which they repeatedly mistake for dog chew toys! Deborah admits she has made a dog training mistake with Fabio’ the blonde poodle shown here- a mistake she warned her audiences not to make and then went and did it herself; she took pictures and laughed when ‘Fabio’ stole a receipt and now she’ll likely have to ‘pay the price’ with more training to get him to avoid stealing and chewing paper. Wildlife and other dangers like poison are reasons everyone should train their dog to ‘come’ when called and also to ‘drop’ what the dog has in its mouth on command, and ‘leave it’ if told before he grabs the object.

Animal Party Episode 154 What’s Wrong with Dog Breeding in America?
2023/06/21
Info (Show/Hide)
Deb gets Liz Menegon on the show ahead of her interviews with the Washington Post, Forbes and USA Today, to tackle the topic of what’s wrong with dog breeding in America? Did you know that the USDA in charge of regulating food animals is also in charge of the pet industry? Is the AKC doing a good job policing bad apples in the breeding world? Liz says ‘no’. Puppy mills are thriving, and the pups and new owners are suffering. Liz has a new app called HANDS2PAWS that helps people discover what breed best suits their needs and then directs them to the breed clubs with registries of ethical local breeders.
What about mutts? You can use the app to find the breeds that match you and then get a rescue mutt with a combination of those breeds. Deborah explains that when she released her quiz ‘PICK YOUR PUP’ she asked Dr Professor Stan Coren, author of ‘the Intelligence of dogs’ how people could find the right mutt for them; and he confirmed Deborah’s observation that ‘what you see is what you get’ with mutts. If the pup you are considering adopting has floppy ears, webbed paws and likes to fetch you’ve got a mostly retriever for example so the app HANDS2PAWS can be used to find mutts as well as purebreds and lead prospective pet owners to adopt a shelter dog that is their best match.

Liz Menegon, long time animal advocate has a new free app called HANDS2PAWS which matches families with their perfect dog breed match based on more than just looks! Energy, grooming and needs for mental stimulation plus size and drool and barking are all factored into the algorithm so you end up with a dog that fits your lifestyle and won’t end up in a shelter due to a mismatch. Liz explains that 60% of the dogs surrendered to shelters are there because of breed mismatch or medical conditions buyers didn’t realize.
Many years ago Deborah created a Cosmo style quiz called ‘PICK YOUR PUP’ which helped people find a good dog match for their lifestyle as she realized way back then that mismatch was a huge cause of homeless pets. The Australian shepherds racing the hallways of Liz’s condo, or worse being drugged to fit the condo life, are examples of exercise and mental mismatch that the HANDS2PAWS app will prevent. Have you heard of the ‘horrible hundred’ list of breeders you must avoid? Liz and Deb discuss breeding history, ethics and controls world-wide.

Persians, Himalayans, Abyssinian, Turkish Van, Ragdoll, Manx, Rex, Siamese and others are contrasted and compared.
Besides the pedigreed breed or combination of breeds you may be dealing with, the nature of that particular animal and the way humans nurtured it as a very young kitten always play a role so please make sure you consider the individual kitten or puppy and its parents when selecting and raise it well for a cat or dog that will be its best and most happy. Deborah reports on a study done by the Veterinarians about worst and best cat patients. The Vets did not categorize by breed but instead used coat color as the trait providing for some interesting discussion about colour and attitude and sometimes eye colour can indicate a deaf ear or blind eye in a pup or kitten.

What are they actually doing to help animals on the ground? Right now they are working to stop the Cormorant cull in Ontario and they need your support
Cormorants are migratory birds that eat small fish in fresh and salt water and migrate from all over the USA and Canada and have been persecuted for decades. Even during the pandemic when only essential workers are meant to be out, the Ontario government is still paying and sending people in boats to a bird sanctuary island 25 miles off shore to kill cormorants. These birds are not Ontario’s to kill, Deborah points out these are the same birds that fly all over north America and migrate back and forth so you don’t have to be Canadian to send this politician an email.

Info (Show/Hide)
Deb Wolfe summarizes the essential facts about pets and Corona Covid 19 and asks Dr. Stanley Coren about the future after the pandemic. Dr. Coren uses research on human behavior and human history to make intelligent predictions about how humans will socialize post pandemic and how long it will take. Deb Wolfe asks; “Will attitudes toward hand shakes, urban density, crowds, and travel change forever? Will there be good effects like less pollution and less stressful lives or will it all go back to the way it was before the pandemic? Will China close its wet markets? And how long will it take for us as a world to recover and move on?”
Dr. Coren states that 28% of North Americans live completely alone, and many of them are either younger or older people. “Will the pandemic isolation make people living alone want to find partners to live with?” 68% live in dense urban settings and in high rises 52% say they don’t know their neighbors names. “Will that change? Will people go back to traveling on planes and cruise ships?” Dr. Coren is able to bring facts together from recent events like SARS and historic events like plagues in our human history and combine that information with human psychology studies to predict how our world will look after Corona. Deb Wolfe asks Dr. Stanley Coren some of the questions she’s received like; ‘How can I deflate intense anger, panic and outbursts in my kids or other adults stuck in the same household?’ and ‘How can we deal with cabin fever?’ and ‘Why are we hoarding toilet paper?’ Dr. Coren gives good practical advice and explains why talking to your pets out loud about your troubles actually helps you chemically; your pet is your therapist and always available! He explains how to use interruption and nice offers to diffuse tension and create separations and privacy.
Deb asks why we are hoarding toilet paper and asks Dr. Coren to explain the effect of generation on peoples’ reactions to fear. Deb provides the latest info from the American Veterinary College press releases and the CDC (Canada Center for Disease Control and Prevention) about pets and keeping your pets and yourselves safe. This show will give you practical helpful tips for home schooling your kids and living better during the pandemic. To see more of Deb Wolfe and her farm full of dogs, cats, and farm critters including baby chicks go to Deb Wolfe - Pet Expert on YouTube or find Camp Good Dog on Facebook.

Animal Party Episode 102 Deborah Defends Doodles
2019/12/22
Info (Show/Hide)
Deborah points out the untruths being circulated in the attack on doodles recently in the press after an interview with the creator of the original labradoodle for service who says creating the breed is his life’s regret and described doodles as ‘Frankenstien monsters’ . When his explanations are closely examined, it is obvious he regrets his choice mostly because of the problems that come with mass popularity and unethical breeding as Deborah and Dr. StanCoren agree has happened to almost every breed that became popular too fast. In the interview Mr. Wally Conron states that he attempted to train 33 different standard poodles for service as Seeing Eye dogs and failed!
What do Jennifer Anniston, Tiger Woods, Neil Young, and Deborah Wolfe have in common? They own doodles! They could own any dog in Dogdom but its Doodle they choose!

Animal Party Episode 101 What To Buy And What Not To Buy For Pets This Holiday Season
2019/12/19
Info (Show/Hide)
Deborah Wolfe interviews Stacy Mantle about some of the pet products she has tested and reviewed this year. Plus Deb Wolfe throws in some behavioral advice and training tips for dogs and cats and the topics come up including how to get a two faced, or ‘psycho’ cat who seeks out touch then attacks to enjoy touch and be loving.
Stacy recommends the best pet brands for food treat choices like ‘The Honest Kitchen ’ for sweet potato and other dehydrated treats and ‘Blueberry Pet’ for not ugly Christmas Sweaters. Chuck-it (the claw toy that allows you to throw balls very far) is still a terrific stocking stuffer for every owner of an active dog, both experts agree. Glow in the dark frisbees work for night play especially in places where it gets dark so early and you and your dog want to go play frisbee after work or school. Happy holidays from Deb Wolfe, and happy pet shopping from Stacy Mantle at Pets Weekly.

Animal Party Episode 100 Sleep Tight - Don’t Let The Bedbugs Bite
2019/12/11
Info (Show/Hide)
Deborah talks with Sheree Swindle about what it takes to become a bed bug detection dog, and what it takes to be a bed bug dog handler. This is not for the squeamish! Did you know a bed bug handler must keep a live colony and feed them? That plus certification is intense and has to be redone every year so for most pet owners finding things is more for fun. Hobby scenting has clubs and competitions for finding scented oils or just for your own uses; finding the phone, keys, your kids or your car are all possible. Check out the new channel for Deb Wolfe- Pet Expert on YouTube to see Deb’s easy to follow demonstrations with different untrained dogs learning to find. If you think bed bug detection might be for you or if you have a bed bug worry or concern please contact bed bug mutts and they’ll help you out (discreetly). Today’s show discusses how the dogs are selected, trained, worked and treated and how they do their job to keep places like hospitals, hotels and homes bed bug free.
