Ep 85: Jennifer Gimenez and Mandy Sherman
2011/07/24
Info (Show/Hide)
July 24, 2011- We are all new today with actress Jennifer Gimenez from VH1's Sober House and Celebrity Rehab. In the wake of Amy Winehouse's passing, this could be one of our most topical shows ever on addiction and celebrity sobriety. Joining as co-host is Mandy Sherman.
Jennifer Gimenez is rapidly emerging as one of Hollywood's brightest talents. She has proven her merit not only as a supermodel, but also as an actress and reality star.
Gimenez's exotic beauty is the result of her Argentinean background. She is a first-generation American who moved back to the U.S. when she was six years-old. At the tender age of fourteen, Gimenez was discovered by famed photographer, Bruce Weber, and quickly ascended to stardom as an international model.
Gimenez has achieved supermodel status through the nearly hundred magazine covers she has graced, as well as being a highly sought-after runway model. She was the youngest model ever to appear on the cover of American Elle. Among her other covers are international editions of Elle, Vogue, Bazaar, and Marie Claire. She has appeared in runway shows around the world, including Paris, New York, Japan, London and Milan and walked the runway of every major designer, such as Armani, Calvin Klein, Chanel and Prada. Gimenez has shot numerous campaigns for companies including Calvin Klein, Guess, St. John, Paul Mitchell and Avon and appeared in countless fashion editorials. Gimenez is proud to be credited as one of the first models to break the barriers for Latinas. In addition, she graced the cover of Pasadena Magazine as an example of a woman who continues to reach for and exemplify exceptional success.
Gimenez's extraordinary sex appeal led her to being named one of Maxim's "Hot 100" and Esquire's "Women We Love." She went on to appear in music videos for such renowned recording artists as Mick Jagger, Prince, 2Pac Shakur and Babyface. After recurring television appearances including The Young and The Restless and The Bold and The Beautiful, Jennifer landed her first major film role in Ted Demme's Blow, starring alongside Johnny Depp. She followed up with roles in movies as diverse as Vanilla Sky, Corky Romano, Charlie's Angels 2, White Man's Burden, Checkmate and The Sweetest Thing.
As Gimenez's career grew and stardom took hold, she found herself , like many others, victim to drug addiction and alcohol abuse. But after over 5 inspiring years of sobriety, Gimenez has used her courageous recovery to help others. She appeared as the house manager of VH-1's hit television show, Sober House seasons 1 and 2. She has been the celebrity guest on talk shows such as, The View, Good Day L.A., The Today Show and continues to appear as a celebrity panelist on Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell. And because of her fun and infectious energy, she shared her fashion expertise as a judge on Model Latina for SiTV.
Watch Jennifer Gimenez in VH1's on season 5 of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew - beginning Sunday, June 26, 2011.

Ep 79: singer Taylor Dayne with co-host Ray Allen
2011/05/23
Info (Show/Hide)
May 23, 2011- With confidence maturity and an indisputably amazing voice, Taylor Dayne stands out as one of music's most dynamic artists. Her versatile and powerful voice has gained recognition in multiple genres from pop, dance and rock to adult contemporary. Taylor's unique vocal style has earned her numerous multi-platinum and gold selling albums, including the multi-platinum albums "Tell It To My Heart" and "Can't Fight Fate" as well as the gold album "Soul Dancing." She has sold-out two world tours, garnered three Grammy nominations and has successfully appeared in numerous film, television and stage roles including a stint on Broadway in 2001 when she made her Broadway debut in the Elton John/Tim Rice, Tony award-winning musical "Aida."
Taylor recently completed recording her fifth studio album which was released in early 2008. She presently is working on a new country album.
Taylor (born Leslie Wunderman) grew up in New York and began hitting New York clubs like CBGB's, the Bottom Line, and Trax by night and studying music theory and composition in college by day. She received classical training from Maestro Carelli, Master at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1985 she joined the new Wave band "The Next," but soon realized that she could best pursue her musical calling as a solo artist.
In 1987, Taylor and Rick Wake recorded the single "Tell It To My Heart" which led to her first major label deal with Arista Records. In 1988, as Taylor Dayne, she released her debut album, "Tell It to My Heart" which stormed up the charts all over the world and sold over two million copies in the US alone. The album included four top ten singles: "Tell It To My Heart," "Prove Your Love," "I'll Always Love You" and "Don't Rush Me."
Her second album, "Can't Fight Fate," released in 1989, more than matched the success of her debut. Once more the album contained four top ten singles, including the #1 smash "Love Will Lead You Back." "Can't Fight Fate" again earned Taylor a double platinum album in the US and yet another sold out world tour which took Taylor to Australia, the Far East, Germany, Sweden and the UK.
Following the tour Taylor took a hiatus to prepare for her third album and in 1992 she was back with "Soul Dancing." Again she raced up the charts all over the world with her cover of the Barry White classic "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" produced by C+C Music Factory. Few artists have the guts and soul required to pull off such an ambitious rendering. The track hit the top of the charts in the US, UK and Australia and stayed on the charts for over 20 weeks.
In 1994 Taylor's career began to broaden as she was cast by Warren Beatty to appear in her first movie, "Love Affair" starring Beatty and Annette Benning. In that same year Jim Steinman sought out Taylor to record "Original Sin," the theme song from the movie "The Shadow." She also starred in the successful Mel Brooks production of "Archie and Mehitabel," in the role of the alley cat, Mehitabel, which was originated by Eartha Kitt in 1950.
In 1996 Taylor released her "Greatest Hits" album and continued her film career. She starred in "Fools Paradise" and in the HBO film "Stag" with an all-star cast that included Mario Van Peebles, Kevin Dillon and Ben Gazzarra which solidified her position as a multi-faceted performer.
In 1998 Taylor again took the reins of her musical career as she co-wrote and produced her fourth album for her independent venture, Neptune Records. "Naked Without You," her most personal album to date, included the singles "Unstoppable" and the dance hits "Whatever You Want" and "Naked Without You."
This was followed by a Live CD in 2000 and later in 2000 she recorded and co-produced "Planet Love" with Peter Lorimer which was the title song for the Robert DeNiro film "Flawless." This dance hit went to #1 on the Billboard Dance chart.
In 2001, Taylor made her Broadway debut in the Elton John/Tim Rice, Tony award- winning musical "Aida," portraying "Princess Amneris" for which performance she drew rave reviews and remained in the role for nine months.
For two seasons beginning in 2000 Taylor guest starred in the Showtime series "Rude Awakenings." In 2001 she recorded the song "How Many" for the "Circuit" soundtrack which was produced by Tony Moran. The song hit the top of the dance charts.
Taylor tours constantly and continues to write and record music. She recently she recorded songs for the feature film soundtracks "Lizzy McGuire" and "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton". The soundtrack for "Lizzy McGuire" went multi-platinum with her song "Supermodel."
Most recently Taylor has guest starred on the hit show "Rescue Me" and "Cold Case" and currently is appearing in "Gone Country" on CMT. She also is featured in the independent feature film "I Am Bad", currently in post-production.

Ep 77: An Episode About Nothing With Sherry Layne
2011/04/25
It worked for Seinfeld...
Ep 76: The Fabulous Beekman Boys: Josh and Brent
2011/04/18
Info (Show/Hide)
April 18, 2011- What do you get when you combine a former Vice President of Martha Stewart Living, a drag queen turned ad exec and New York Times bestselling author, an estate and farm in upstate New York, a few quirky neighbors and goats, pigs and a llama to boot?
The answer: a funny and irreverent Planet Green series focused on organic living, connecting to the earth, raising animals humanely, and just living a simple, sustainable lifestyle.
In 2010, I discovered not only a treasured new author (I Am Not Myself These Days is hands down my favorite memoire), but also two new heroes who not only share my twisted dicotomy for big city fabulousness but also back to my roots farming. The Fabulous Beekman Boys, is not to be missed. Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge These guys are total city-slicker New Yorkers, but they have moved upstate to try and revive a farm and create a new organic lifestyle brand, 'Beekman 1802'. For them, that turns out to mean wrangling pigs and wrapping 14,000 bars of organic goat milk soapâ??not a typical day in their previous New York life.
Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge are not your average couple. They have transplanted themselves from New York City to Beekman Farm in upstate New York, where they are raising 80 goats, two pigs, a dozen chickens and a narcissistic llama. These guys have urban professional backgrounds and they're now making goat milk soap.
Technically, Josh isn't new to upstate New York. He was born there, but then raised in rural Wisconsin. He is the New York Times bestselling author of I Am Not Myself These Days and Candy Everybody Wants and also a new book soon to hit the shelves called The Bucolic Plague which is about moving to the farm. He is a monthly columnist for OUT magazine and a contributor to NPR.
Born and raised in North Carolina, Brent is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He was Vice President of Healthy Living at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and he writes for care2.com and The Huffington Post.
Brent is described as having a type A personality, while Josh is more laid back. Friends who visit them upstate attest to the difficulties they face trying to live the simple life. Turns out, it's not so simple.
But, as they said: "We believe that a farm can be much larger than its fences. If someone told us that we'd trade in New York City for eighty goats, two pigs, a dozen chickens and a narcissistic llama, we would have told them that they were crazy. It turns out that we are."
We are excited to be welcoming Josh back to the show for a second time and will be making sure the studio is extra clean for Brent (in spite of the fact he will be calling in from across the country). Joining as co-host this week is Ray Allen.
Ep 75: Shannon Elizabeth
2011/04/11
Info (Show/Hide)
April 11, 2011- She's one of my best friends and this is Shannon Elizabeth's first time sitting down with me for an exclusive one on one! Be sure and listen in as we chat about her decision to become a vegetarian, navigating the manly world of poker and what we are doing to make the world a better place.
Shannon Elizabeth was born in Houston, Texas. Immediately after graduating high schoo, Shannon moved to New York to pursue an opportunity she was presented with to model. Although never having a desire to model, she decided to try it in hopes that it could lead her into the career of acting she had always dreamed about.
After years of modeling, Shannon eventually landed in Los Angeles to start her acting career. One of her first jobs was shooting an episode of Arli$$ on HBO alongside Robert Wuhl. It was a few years, and many projects, later though that Shannon landed the role of Nadia in American Pie, which garnered her a nomination for Breakthrough Female Performance at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. Shannon subsequently starred in Scary Movie which broke many records at the box office & beyondâ?¦(at the time it was the biggest opening for an â??Râ?? rated comedy in history, the biggest opening for a non-sequel in comedy history, the highest grossing film directed by an African American in history, the biggest opening for Miramax in history and the highest grossing film in Miramax history!) Then, in 2001 Shannon won the Breakthrough Actress Award at the Hollywood Film Festival. She has since starred in over 25 films and TV shows and worked with many directors whom she greatly admires, including Kevin Smith, Richard Curtis, Penelope Spheeris and Wes Craven. Shannonâ??s current dreams and ventures include her passion for directing and producing. She loves the creative process and finds few things more fulfilling than directing and editing her own projects-needless to say, Shannon greatly aspires to soon follow in Kathryn Bigelowâ??s footsteps!
In Shannon's spare time she has also become a huge poker aficionado. She originally learned how to play just so she could raise money for her biggest passion in life, animal rescue. Seeing as acting can have lots of downtime, she has been known to call poker her second career.
Ep 74: Special Sunday Show with Graham Colton
2011/04/03
Info (Show/Hide)
"I've never felt more like myself than I have on this album. I found myself, and I finally found my voice," the singer, songwriter and guitarist Graham Colton says of the forthcoming CD, Here Right Now.
Don't call it a simple return. Call it a metamorphosis, a deep progression, an inspired evolution or - perhaps most fitting - a rewarding exercise in self-actualization. Stepping into his own in order to connect to his heart and artistic vision, Graham Colton has emerged with a stunning collection of pop-rock melodies, lyrics and emotions in 12 tracks that swing between love and heartbreak, trials and relief.
"The last album I made with my band was heavily influenced by what we all loved listening to and the artists we toured with. Looking back, it was hard for me to identify who I was as an artist in that situation. I had to learn how to be a performer and a songwriter in my own right before I could find my true self to make the album I really wanted to, which is now completely natural and one-hundred percent honest," Colton explains.
Although it can be said that the power of the story is in the telling, itâ??s the tale itself that inspires the story to be told. Performance and delivery make up only one half of the equation; the other half is the feeling and emotion that inspires the creation of melodies and lyrics. That substance is the product of lessons learned over hundreds of shows and thousands of miles traveled, and the distance in between.
Ep 73: 100 Monkeys
2011/03/28
Info (Show/Hide)
March 28, 2011- From of the City of Angels comes 100 Monkeys, a band described by SPIN.com as â??funk rockâ?? and by RollingStone.com as â??tribal sounds with vocals recalling Jim Morrisonâ??s baritone croon.â?? Beyond Race Magazine says they are â??sing-along-worthy, sometimes bluesyâ?? and MTV.com describes them as a mix of â??Iggy Pop with the Raconteurs.â??
100 Monkeys, however, jest that their music is purely â??onomatopoetic, but for the sake of simplicity, weâ??ll call it funky rock-n-roll.â??
This quintet of multi-instrumentalists comprises of multi-faceted artists, actors and producers such as: Jackson Rathbone (who appears in such movies as â??The Last Airbender,â?? and the â??Twilightâ?? saga), Ben Graupner (Trapped in the 5150, Devolved), Jerad Anderson (Wayne/Lauren Film Company), Lawrence Abrams (of the great Willie Bobo, Bob Hope U.S.O. tour, and The Artist Consortium), and Ben Johnson (of the Stevedores and music producer of Spencer Bellâ??s â??Brainâ??).
100 Monkeys are known to switch instruments and vocalists nearly every other song during their raucous, theatrical live-sets, an idea patented as the â??Monkey Switcherooâ??. Swinging about the stage with an enthusiasm that seems to have been lost since the advent of digital recordings, the 100 Monkeys bring back that analog rock-n-roll of the 60â??s, with the humor and cynicism of modern times.
When asked to describe their lyrics, the band attributes â??drinking, the devil, death, and women who cheat and steal.â?? To further the eclectic eccentricity, the band consistently improvises a song per live-set, whereupon they ask an idea or â??song titleâ?? from the audience and proceed to jam out a tune replete with verses and lyricsâ?¦another original idea from an original rock band.
100 Monkeysâ?? completely independent discography includes: â??Monster de Luxâ?? (all improvised recordings),â??Singlesâ?? (Ugly Girl, Smoke, Wasteland Too), â??The Creative Control: Live Sessions,â?? â??Grape,â?? and â??Live and Kickinâ??.â??
Their first studio album, â??Grapeâ??, which was released in 2009, and an untitled follow-up album set for January 2011. Off the yet-to-be-titled sophomore album, 100 Monkeys released their first single, â??KolPixâ??, with a B-side set, â??Future Radio.â??

Info (Show/Hide)
November 29, 2010 - From Alonso Duralde himself:
I'm very excited about my new book HAVE YOURSELF A MOVIE LITTLE CHRISTMAS (Limelight Editions), not to mention my 2005 Insight Out Book Club best-seller 101 MUST-SEE MOVIES FOR GAY MEN (Advocate Books). You can currently catch me on IFC's THE GRID; until the recent cancellation of THE ROTTEN TOMATOES SHOW on Current, I was one of that show's recurring film critics, and I was presented the "Lifetime (of the Show) Achievement Award" in 2009. I'm a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and write about film and entertainment for various outlets, including Movieline.com, MSNBC.com, HitFix.com, and MovieFone.com.
I also work with several film festivals, including the USA Film Festival/Dallas (where he served as Artistic Director for five years), Outfest, and Sundance, and I also served on the nominating committees for the 2008 (Narrative) and 2010 (Documentary) Independent Spirit Awards. All of which is to say that I've watched my share of screener DVDs.
Look for me in a city near you in December of 2010 with the new book; otherwise, I very happily live in West Hollywood in an awesome rent-controlled apartment with my husband Dave White, a very funny film critic whose memoir EXILE IN GUYVILLE you really oughta read.
Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas is the first film guide written specifically for holiday film viewing, including traditional classics alongside more unusual choices of films that are set at Yuletide without being thought of as â??Christmas movies.â?? The guide will spotlight Christmas-themed adult comedies, dramas, action thrillers, foreign films, and horror filmsâ??even a documentaryâ??as well as movies for the whole family.

2010/10/18
Info (Show/Hide)
October 18, 2010 - Based on the ongoing conversation of coming out and bullying, out actor Chad Allen wrote the following open letter to Zach Harrington and all of the other struggling-to-come-to-terms-with-themselves teens. After reading the letter, I reached out to Chad so we could continue this very important conversation. We need to be more kind to each other. We need to instill this in our children. And we need to come together as a society to realize that there is no shame in being gay and that death is not the answer to the struggle.
Ep 61: Joey Fatone and Joe Mulvihill
2010/10/11
Info (Show/Hide)
October 11, 2010 - Long before the mega-popular boy band *NSYNC put his winsome mug on hordes of magazine covers, Brooklyn-born Joey Fatone had music on his mind. While still in high school, the cheerful baritone and three pals formed the Big Guys, an a cappella group that once serenaded Miss Florida on the TV series Teen Talk. He met future band mate Chris Kirkpatrick while performing in Universal Studios Floridaâ??s "Beetlejuice's Graveyard Revue.â?? The two theme-park performers linked up with handsome crooners J.C. Chavez and Justin Timberlake, and before long their 1998 self-titled debut was paving the way for them to become one of the biggest-selling music acts of its time. In the years since the groupâ??s final tour in 2002, Fatone has not rested on his laurels. Heâ??s transferred his talents to the silver screen, appearing in the 2002 hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding and the acclaimed 2003 film The Cooler. He debuted on Broadway in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rent, and later stretched his vocal chords as a lead in a revival of Little Shop of Horrors. He also acquired a new generation of cooing fans, cha-chaing his way into a second-place finish on the 2007 edition of ABCâ??s Dancing with the Stars. His success on the dance floor led NBC to hire the personable songster as the host for their karaoke game show Singing Bee. For a time, he also performed red-carpet duties for the TV GUIDE Channel alongside Lisa Rinna. Off-screen, his personal life has been equally blessed. He married his high-school sweetheart, Kelly Baldwin, in 2004; their daughter Brianna served as flower girl.
Ep 60: Bullying and Kindness
2010/10/04
Due to a scheduling conflict, Kate Pazakis will be joining us on a future show. Instead, tonight I'm planning on sharing my thoughts on why kindness needs to be practiced more fruitfully in our daily lives as well as looking back on my favorite songs from the summer of 2010!
Ep 59: Ashley Arrison with Aben Eubanks
2010/09/20
Info (Show/Hide)
Ashley Arrison is the singer-songwriter you might not know yetâ?¦but you will. She is the complete package of gorgeous vocals, striking beauty, and a catalog of songs just waiting to be heard and cherished. Arrison offers up songs you will love immediately and cause you to wonder why no one has told you about her before now.
Arrisonâ??s childhood experiences set the compass for her musical passions. From performing as an orphan in a professional theatre production of the musical â??Annie,â?? to singing along side Justin Timberlake as a duet partner for three years, to being a finalist on â??The Mickey Mouse Club,â?? (among the names pop culture now knows so well), Arrisonâ??s musical destiny was also framed by the rich and diverse musical heritage that existed in her childhood homes of Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee.
Now as an adult, Arrisonâ??s credentials have only gotten more impressive. Dividing her time between Los Angeles and Nashville, she has worked closely with composer Jon Brion, as well as toured as country star Radney Fosterâ??s background vocalist for many years. She is an established studio singer who has sung on albums for artists ranging from Badly Drawn Boy to Lindsay Lohan. Arrison has also fronted her own band for the past two years and consistently plays sold out shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville.
The songs on her debut album, Hearts On Parade are created from a love of well-crafted country lyrics and pop melodies. James Taylor, Trisha Yearwood, Sarah McLachlan and Ryan Adams are just a few of the artists who have paved the way for Arrison to find herself musically and create her own sound. Her songwriting, lyrical delivery, and heartfelt honesty shine through all of her work and provides a narrative everyone can relate to. â??Iâ??ve had to learn the hard way about everything in the romance department, but at least I have these songs to show for the misery Iâ??ve put myself through!â?? Although heartache and unrequited love play a heavy role in her lyrical decisions, she believes there is strength to be found in the process. â??It's very self empowering to be able to transform your feelings into a tangible piece of art. I would love to be a part of a personâ??s life soundtrack, the way so many great artists have been a part of mine.â??
Hearts On Parade offers a deeper look into Arrisonâ??s many life experiences and offers lush, endearing instrumentation including melatrons, vibraphones, tribal drums, and even hand claps. â??This album is so absolutely me. Thereâ??s not one word I havenâ??t lived. It took me a long time, but I know exactly who I am and what I want to say. I feel like Iâ??ve been pregnant my whole life and I finally had the babyâ?¦â?? The first single, â??Trying To Help You Out,â?? was cowritten with Kelly Clarkson, who also lends backing vocals to the track. Hearts On Parade proves Arrison has officially taken the leap as a solo artist. So, go ahead and take a listen - the music speaks for itself.

Ep: 57 Homecoming: Reminiscing with childhood friends

Flying in from my week long trip to Seattle and Vancouver, we'll be chatting about the adventure as well as chatting with some of the friends I hadn't seen in twenty years! Tonight you'll be able to hear first hand about the teenage impressions I had left behind before moving to the sunny skies of California in 1990!
Ep 56: Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Eric Shane
2010/08/23
Info (Show/Hide)
August 23, 2010- Josh Kilmer-Purcell has been the star of my summer. Not only have I devoured his books, I Am Not Myself These Days, Candy Everybody Wants and THE BUCOLIC PLAGUE: HOW TWO MANHATTANITES BECAME GENTLEMEN FARMERS, I was also able to enjoy him on my TV in the Planet Green production The Fabulous Beekman Boys. Not since Armistead Maupin have I been so enamored with an author and never have I been this excited about a guest! Please join us as we chat about goats, drag queens, goldfish, tomatoes, farming and writing!
Josh Kilmer-Purcell, New York Times bestselling author of I Am Not Myself These Days: A Memoir and Candy Everybody Wants: A Novel, brings his irrepressible sense of humor to narrate his unlikely journey from New York City ad man (and retired drag queen) to weekend farmer with 60 goats. THE BUCOLIC PLAGUE: HOW TWO MANHATTANITES BECAME GENTLEMEN FARMERS- An Unconventional Memoir (HarperCollins Publishers) tells the story of how Kilmer-Purcell and his partner, Brent, a vice president at Martha Stewart Omni Media, stumble upon the Beekman Mansion, a gorgeous 19th century farmhouse in Sharon Springs, New York that had been empty for four years. Embracing the â??can doâ?? ethos of their twin heroes (Martha and Oprah), the couple embarks on an unforgettable adventure of bringing a dormant farm back to lifeâ??while trying to maintain their sanity and their relationship.
Welcomed with open arms by the townâ??s colorful characters, and aided immeasurably by Farmer John, their hardworking caretaker, the â??Beekman Boysâ?? plunge headlong into their weekend labor of love. A herd of goats, a new heirloom vegetable garden, and a seemingly neverâ??ending list of chores occupy them from the minute they arrive upstate on Friday night to the moment they depart for Manhattan on Sunday evening.
Working with a local soap maker, the boys hatch a plan to make organic goat milk soap as their holiday present for friends and colleagues, including Martha Stewart herself. To their amazement, Martha loves the present and invites them to do a segment on her show. Overnight, the â??Beekman Boysâ?? are from transformed from weekend hobbyists to organic entrepreneurs. Orders rush in for their new brand of soap, Beekman 1802, while Joshâ??always the ad manâ??chronicles the goings-on at the farm on a new website for their ever-increasing audience of fans.
But despite the camera-ready appearance of life on the farm, trouble starts to brew as the stress of maintaining the property and their business threatens their relationship. And when the Great Recession hits, first Brent, then Josh gets laid off from work, leaving them to question whether life on the farm is truly sustainable.
With a wit reminiscent of David Sedaris, Josh Kilmer-Purcell has written an unforgettable memoir about following oneâ??s passion. A media dynamo (both Josh and Brent Ridge will be featured on Planet Green TV reality series, â??The Fabulous Beekman Boysâ??), Josh Kilmer-Purcell delivers a tender and very funny story of the joys (and trials) that await when you trust your instincts and take a leap of faith.
Ep 55: Madison Cain and Pauly David
2010/08/16
Info (Show/Hide)
She might only be sixteen, but Madison Cain is no rookie
at the music game. As the oldest daughter of Journey
keyboard player & famed songwriter, Jonathan Cain, she
grew up backstage listening to some of the most
influential musicians of our time as well as any artist
that played on either of the two country stations she
could pick up in scenic Northern California.
Originally from Novato, California, Madison grew up with
what she thought was a normal lifestyle: summers living
the gypsy life on the road with her Dadâ??s band, having
kids come up to her at her brotherâ??s baseball games
asking what it was like to live with a rock star and seeing
her Dadâ??s songs memorialized on one of her favorite TV
shows, Glee. She thought everyone's bedrooms used to
be studios with people like Huey Lewis, Michael Bolton,
John Waite and Steve Perry recording songs there.
By the time she was 13, she started to realize that the
musical magic that had taken place in her father's
recording studio (now her bedroom) must have seeped
through the sheetrock and into her veins. Madison had
been bitten by the music bug and knew she was ready to
embark on something bigger than her self. She soon
went into the studio and tracked five songs, quickly
feeling a connection to the soothing melodies and lyrics
of classic country music. After sheâ??d proven to her father
that this was more than a fleeting hobby, he called Kim
Tribble, a heavy hitting songwriter who invited them to
Nashville and agreed to sit down with Madison and
began showing her the musical process.
Madison spent a week in the Country music capitol
watching and learning as Kim and her father worked
with her and taught her how to write music and
biography
explained the technical aspects of putting a life story
into a three-minute song. By this point, she had fallen
in love with the way a musicianâ??s mind worked and felt
confident that Nashville was where she wanted to call
home.
The Cains moved to Nashville in 2009 to embark on a
new life immersed in an efficacious music scene and to
allow Madison to continue chasing her dream as a
thick-skinned teen ready to leave a mark on Country
music. With influences like Carrie Underwood, Kelly
Clarkson and Dolly Partonâ??s â??Joleneâ?? as her favorite
tune, Madison has found her place in the music world,
writing her own songs filled with heart and soul.
Since returning to Music City, Madison has dedicated
herself 100% to her craft. From graduating high school
early to working with a vocal teacher via Skype between
doing chores, Madison feels that everything is falling
perfectly into place.
She is a free spirit and a traditional teen who likes
jamming out to the radio with her sister and brother but
she also has an old soul and a love for all things vintage.
She enjoys collecting vintage clothes, riding horses,
scouring flea markets, antiques and the original Janis
Joplin show invites in her room are pretty cool, too. This
vintage side of her is what has shaped who she is as an
artist.
"I like Country music because it is an expression of me
and because the messages conveyed in songs are
meaningful and genuine stories,â?? she said. â??I love the
vintage feel that Country music elicits. It has clean and
biography
pure lyrics with gritty music that transcends current
trends.â??
She might be the daughter of one of the greatest
musicians ever known, but Madison has paved her way
through the music world with hard work, talent and the
intuition to always dream bigger.
Ep 54: The Iveys
2010/08/09
Info (Show/Hide)
August 9, 2010- If I had a talk show that aired on television, I would hire The Iveys as my house band (making no assumptions they'd accept because their light shines bright enough to do whatever they wish!) and if they were orphaned, I would snatch them up and adopt them (probably all seven if they assuming they are as fantastic as the original four I met)! The Iveys are back for a catch up tonight to hear about their current tour, their new music video and our overdue meeting last Friday night. Also on tap is a brand new Quantum Sleep (wait 'til you hear where Samantha Beckett has landed this week after saving The Brady Bunch) and Eric Shane's Did You Know has a thing or two to say about lip gloss!
About The Iveys
The Iveys are Arlen, Jessica & Jillian.
The brother/sister band grew up in West Texas, about fifty miles outside of El Paso surrounded by family and a love for music. â??Growing up we listened to all of our dadâ??s old records, from The Beatles to the Rolling Stones, Queen to The Eagles. It really influenced our songwriting in a positive way.â??
The musical influences are hard to miss when you hear their soaring melodies, rich harmonies and heartfelt lyrics.
â??We love playing our music," says Arlen, "To see the emotion run across the audience and know theyâ??re living the song with you is a very special moment we share with our fans."
During the time they spent at Sonic Ranch Recording Studios working on the songs for their album they were introduced to noted Italian producer Ettore Grenci who began recording with them in late 2008.
With the additional guidance of Stephen Short and Tony Rancich their self-titled debut album was completed and released in 2009.
â??This album we really put a lot of focus into our harmonies,â?? says Jessica, â??Itâ??s a big part of who we are as a group.â??
They recently released the music video for their single â??Back When it was Our Worldâ?? and have toured across the nation playing numerous shows in support of their album.
â??Our music is something we can share,â?? Jillian says, â??Something thatâ??s alive and that can spread, touching everyone."

Ep 53: Elaine Hendrix
2010/08/02
Info (Show/Hide)
August 2, 2010- In Hollywood ELAINE HENDRIX has been called an â??actorâ??s actorâ??, a â??triple-threatâ??, a â??guyâ??s girlâ??, and renowned Variety columnist Army Archerd likened her to Carol Lombard. Anyone who has the joy of seeing her work most certainly joins The Houston Chronicle in proclaiming, â??Elaine Hendrix is excellent!...Get that girl a sit-com!â??
Fans around the world know her for such popular and diverse projects as Disneyâ??s THE PARENT TRAP, the cult phenomenon WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW?! and the critically acclaimed CBS series JOAN OF ARCADIA, she has even been immortalized as 4 different collectable Happy Meal toys created for her character â??G2â?? from Disney's INSPECTOR GADGET 2.

All of this is just the tip of the iceberg considering she is also an accomplished singer/songwriter and published author. Itâ??s no wonder, then, that legendary film critic Roger Ebert said, â??She earns her stripes.â??

She has particular affinities for vanilla ice cream, STAR WARS, Elvis, and Target, and believes it is important to maintain a healthy balance of work, play, spirituality and shopping.

Ep 51: Dave Holmes and Sherry Layne
2010/07/19
Info (Show/Hide)
July 19, 2010- At the turn of the millenium, NSYNC and Backstreet Boys were at the top of the pop culture food chain and reporting on it all from the front row was MTV VJ, Dave Holmes. On the other side of the aisle was The Baub Show's host and a friend of the band, Bob Merrick. What was uncanny was how the two resembled each other, causing fans to often mistake Merrick as the popular MTV host (a fact that was featured prominently on the original planetbaub site with side by side comparisons on a page entitled, "I am not Dave Holmes"). On tonight's show, Bob and Dave finally meet and chat for the very first time and catch up with Dave's latest adventures, including his new blog, "My Year Of Everything", where he is spending a year reading books by people who took a year off to do something and then writing his own book about it!
Co-hosting tonight will be Sherry Layne, who is premiering her brand new Baub Show exclusive web series, "Quantum Sleep" and another new regular series from Eric Shane!
DAVE HOLMES
No one likes to lose a contest, but itâ??s especially embarrassing when itâ??s on national television. Lucky for Dave Holmes, the runner-up in MTVâ??s first Wanna Be A VJ contest in 1998, sometimes fate fixes it all in the end. Even though he wasnâ??t selected as a VJ through the contest, Holmes did end up with a gig at MTV. He was first set to host a short-lived program titled â??I Spy Videoâ?? before he took on the popular â??Say What? Karaoke.â?? He also appeared on the channelâ??s â??120 Minutesâ?? as well as a VJ introducing â??Spanking Newâ?? videos and other hot tunes.
But before hitting the small screen, Holmes, 36, studied right here in Worcester. He attended the College of the Holy Cross, where he worked for the campus radio station surely a prelude to his later work and reputation as a pop-culture sage with an encyclopedic knowledge of music
Post-MTV, Holmes tried his hand at acting. You can catch him as a reporter in the first â??Fantastic Fourâ?? film as well as Leslie Frost on a few episodes of â??Reno 911!â?? But itâ??s hosting that Holmes, with his good-natured style, does best: he did a brief stint as the MC for â??Fire Me ... Pleaseâ?? on CBS as well as some spots for VH1â??s â??Best Week Everâ?? and specials on E!. He also co-hosts Court TVâ??s â??Saturday Night Solutionâ?? shows and FXâ??s DVD on TV. Most recently, on July 7, he co-hosted the Live Earth concert coverage on July 7 for Bravo.
It doesnâ??t get much bigger than that, hosting a history-making concert that spans seven continents. So with a pretty impressive Hollywood resume especially for someone who started as an unknown in an MTV contest Holmes proves that sometimes losing can bring a bigger prize than winning. written by Bobby Hankinson

Ep 38: Jeff Timmons and Ginny King
2010/03/22
Info (Show/Hide)
March 22, 2010 - Jeff Timmons began what was originally a low-key solo career after a phenomenal run with the â??boy bandâ?? 98 Degrees. He was the founding member of the group, and they produced multi-platinum records (11 Million sold), 8 top ten singles, and a Grammy nomination. He then released his first solo album, Whisper That Way; the album that gave him Top 20 hits on both the Billboard and Radio & Records charts, while having the lead-off single with the same title as the most added single at radio every week leading up to its peak position. The album also produced 3 more chart-topping singles worldwide.
Jeff also appeared on a VH1 Reality TV Show. The opportunity allowed him to work with fellow musicians, Chris Kirkpatrick of NSYNC, Bryan Abrams of Color Me Badd, Rich Cronin of LFO, and four-time Grammy winning producer, Bryan Michael Cox. â??It was one of the best experiences of my lifeâ?¦as it really tested me,â?? he further describes the experience saying, â??It took me out of my comfort zone, which was what I truly needed at the time. I would do it again in a heartbeatâ??
While writing and producing his much awaited second Album, Jeff is also set to launch a new, massive multi-media distribution company called iamMedia. iamMedia will utilize traditional ways of promotion and distribution, and various non-traditional methods to bring brand awareness not only to his album, but a myriad of other artists, genres of music and other mediums of entertainment. Jeff is set to release his new album to everyone completely free between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Anyone who registers at www.jefftimmons.com can receive the entire album!
Off-stage and outside the studio, Jeff is an advocate for a variety of charities and foundations, especially those benefiting children. He works closely with organizations like the St. Jude Children's Hospital and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatrics Aids Foundation.
Ep 37: Sh*tt*ng Gl*tter and Er*c Johnson
2010/03/15
Info (Show/Hide)
In the Summer of 2001, Amy Crosby and her then girlfriend, Von Edwards, went to Devin Tait's birthday party in North Hollywood. The trio had recently met through several drunken encounters at Karaoke nights in local dive bars like Apache and JOX. Toting a guitar and a painting they had made together, the pair serenaded Tait with the dark tune "Grady" which the painting had inspired. Within weeks, the trio had hooked up with their friend Billy Avarathar and drummer Roman Ratej (who went on to drum for TaTu), and began rehearsing songs Amy and Von had written previously under the moniker "Short Haired Girls Club". After splashing on some make-up, vibrant hair colors, sequins and latex, Shitting Glitter was born!
Nine years later and many incarnations later, the band has just released their latest album ¢??Open for Business¢??. The band¢??s catalog is available from Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, and worldwide from iTunes.
Joining me this week as my co-host is SG's resident go-go dancer, frequent co-host and bestie, Eric Johnson!
Ep 36: Shondrella Avery and Jessie McNamara
2010/03/08
Info (Show/Hide)
On this week's show, we're bringing home the laughs with actress and comedienne, Shondrella Avery. With many film and television roles to her credit, she may best be known as "LaFawnduh Lucas," the sexy Internet girlfriend in the movie Napoleon Dynamite, the sleeper hit of the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
You also may have seen her as "Candy" the manicurist in the UPN series Cuts (a spinoff of the popular show, One on One, in which Avery had a recurring role). She also starred for five seasons on the Oxygen channel's Girls Behaving Badly, a modern-day version of Candid Camera meets an all girls Punk'd.
Her other film work includes roles in The Secret Life of Bees, Trippin' and Domino. She created a one-woman show titled Ain't I Enough, based on her experiences growing up with her enormous family, which has aired on HBO. Joining me this week as my co-hostess extraoridnaire is the funny Miss Jessie McNamara!
Ep 35: Laura Crosby and Sherry Layne
2010/03/01
Info (Show/Hide)
After an instant yes from Jeff and Jordan, who appeared on last summer's Big Brother on CBS (where Jordan won and Jeff was voted America's Favorite Player), we thought nothing of the fact that CBS might have something to say about it as they are currently starring in The Amazing Race. So once they're done traveling all over the globe, they'll be back for a chat. In the meantime, I popped in the chatroom and asked if there was another Big Brother houseguest they'd like to hear from and immediately the name Laura filled up the screen. With a half an hour notice, I got ahold of Laura Crosby, also from last summer's Big Brother and she said yes with no hesitation. It was a great chat and she couldn't have been more generous with her stories and her time, including a recap of her recent wedding proposal, which was one for the record books.
Considering it was a last minute scramble, we had a lot of fun and I'm happy to say it is one of my favorite episodes. On hand as my co-host was the funny Sherry Layne and joining us on the phone for some hot topics is the irreverent Knickerbocker. You have to hear it for yourself in the archives!
Ep 34: Chris Kirkpatrick and Geek Girl
2010/02/22
Info (Show/Hide)
Chris Kirkpatrick is credited as the one who put together and started *NSYNC, whose albums*NSYNC and No Strings Attached each sold over 10 million copies earning them the prestigious RIAA Diamond Award for both albums. He along with his four other band members achieved a music industry coup by selling over 56 million records and still hold the records for most records sold in a single day and first week. No Strings Attached sold a staggering 1.1 million albums on the first day of its release and went on to sell a 2.4 million in that first week. Chris has appeared on countless TV shows, magazine covers and won numerous music awards and performed the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Since *NSYNC went on hiatus, Chris has gone on to pursue a solo career. Nigels11 is releasing it first full CD and has performed live shows much to the delight of his fans. Additionally, since 2002, Chris has also lent his acting and vocal skills to the Nickelodeon cartoon, The Fairly Odd Parents, as the teeth-loving pop star, Chip Skylark.
Perhaps Chrisâ??s proudest achievement has little to do with music and everything to do with sharing his good fortune with those infinitely less fortune than he. The Chris Kirkpatrick Foundation was established with that very thought in mind. Through his foundation Chris continues the work he began with *NSYNCâ??s Challenge For The Children Foundation raising over 5 million dollars for childrenâ??s charities. CKF has been able to reach out to disadvantaged children and offer them help and hope. The work of the foundation allows him to share his successes and dreams with young people while making a contribution to change lives one dream at a time.
Luckily for them, Chris Kirkpatrick is just getting started.

While in design college in the mid 1970â??s, Wiedlin stumbled upon the burgeoning LA punk rock scene. She and Belinda Carlisle were inspired to form The Go-Goâ??s. The band quickly became local favorites and were signed by the indie label IRS Records. With most of their songs written or co-written by Jane (including the classic â??Our Lips Are Sealedâ??) The Go-Goâ??s went on to enormous success, selling out Madison Square Garden, the Hollywood Bowl and appearing twice on the cover of Rolling Stone. The band became the first ever all-girl group to write their own songs, play their own instruments, and become immensely popular doing it.
After seven years, The Go-Goâ??s split up and went their separate ways. Jane moved on to a solo career, releasing six albums of her own which included the hits â??Rush Hourâ??, â??Blue Kissâ?? and â??Tangledâ?? (a song featured in the movie â??Pretty Womanâ??). Rolling Stone magazine called her last solo album â??Kissproof Worldâ??, a â??solo tour de force by an entrepreneur, an actress and rock goddessâ??.
Five years after breaking up, The Go-Goâ??s reformed and have remained a band ever since. The band continue to make their mark on popular culture, touring each year, and releasing the critically acclaimed God Bless The Go-Goâ??s in 2001.

Ep 27: Ashley Arrison and Aben Eubanks
2010/01/13
Info (Show/Hide)
Drawing from influences James Taylor, Sarah McLachlan, and Trisha Yearwood, singer/songwriter Ashley Arrison melds modern LA music with old school Americana charm.
Ashley was offered her first gig at 9 years old singing and acting as an orphan in the stage production of Annie at a prominent theater in Memphis, TN where she grew up. Around the same time she became singing partners with fellow Memphian, Justin Timberlake. They played every talent show, hospital, and mall they could perform in, culminating with their audition for the New Mickey Mouse Club. Ashley and Justin were both chosen as finalists, but in the end, they told Ashley she was too tall for the part. While it was a crushing blow for the young twelve year old, in retrospect she realizes it was a path she wasnâ??t meant to take. Her teen years were spent studying the craft of singing and songwriting. She discovered her love for singer/songwriters Neil Finn, Patty Griffin, Jon Brion, and Radney Foster during this time and knew that smart, emotional, and well crafted songs was where her true passion lay. She considers traveling as a backup singer with her longtime songwriting hero, Radney Foster, to be her favorite job to date. In addition to her live music experience, she has acquired notable credits singing backup vocals on albums by Lindsay Lohan and Badly Drawn Boy.
Now this sweet southern songstress is launching her own career, touching lives with her gift of heartfelt melodies and stirring lyrics. On this week's show, she'll be premiering brand new music! Check out Ashleyâ??s new EP Talking Circles available now on iTunes.
