Episode 3640: Texas House Speaker race is about an idea that is far more important than Burrows or Cook – Pratt on Texas 1/7/2025
2025/01/08
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: “Scorched earth ,” belittling the Governor and Lt. Governor , and much more keeps coming from the Lubbock House delegation in its tantrum-style effort to gain the Texas House Speaker’s gavel. Beyond the obvious self-serving nature of the effort so far is the issue of the false arguments being offered by most including almost all press coverage. The race is not about Burrows and his Burrowcrat Coalition or David Cook and his backers, it about putting an end to the “ most pervasive, long-lasting, and heavily funded divide in the Texas Republican Party. “

Dustin Burrows created the BurrowCrat Coalition to advance his goal of becoming Texas House Speaker and in so doing whacked at the hornets’ nest of Texas G.O.P. politics. When you do such for no discernible reason other than self-advancement, you often create opposition that wouldn’t have existed otherwise – and that’s what the BurrowCrats have done: A new Texas PAC seeded with $20 million to be used to separate the Republican chaff from the grain .
A media report says that Governor Abbott will ask for even more money for his Operation Lone Star even though we were promised time and again that funding needs would be much lower if Trump policies were back in place. Legislators should say “no way!”

Episode 3627: New press coverage leaves out paramount issue in Burrows’ BurrowCrat Speaker candidacy – Pratt on Texas 12/17/2024
2024/12/18
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: The BurrowCrat Coalition posits an interesting charge: The Republican House Caucus is “broken.” The problem is that if you read Rep. Terry Wilson’s op-ed backing BurrowCrat Burrows for Speaker of the House, he never gives any evidence at all of anything “broken” in the caucus other than that the majority didn’t support his candidate. Also, he repeats the lie that something was amiss with not being granted a “brief recess” once the voting process had already started. I address this oft repeated misdirection.
I also address the how the press, in many recent stories, left out the paramount issue with the Bonnen-Burrows scandal of a few years back. It’s what they leave out that should give pause to members support Burrows.

Episode 3624: Rep. Lambert suggests there will be another Speaker candidate before January; a BurrowCrat Coalition update – Pratt on Texas 12/12/2024
2024/12/13
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: The BurrowCrat Coalition of Democrats and mostly non-conservative Republicans led by Rep. Dustin Burrows continues to make enemies. Now Governor Abbott stresses that the Speaker needs to come from within the GOP caucus by majority vote and the Lt. Governor agrees . Burrows and crew walked out before the vote total for the nomination changed to three-fifths on the third vote. Walked out and went and did a deal with the radical Left Democrats.
Clearly power-hungry insiders like Burrows and his BurrowCrats don’t care but momentum for what’s right grows: Over 100 Republican County chairmen are now backing David Cook for House Speaker .
Rep. Stan Lambert, a BurrowCrat at the moment, said yesterday in a packed forum in Abilene that there will likely be another House Speaker candidate emerge before the vote in January. It wasn’t covered by the media but it is in the transcript of the forum:
“So what’s the outcome gonna be? I don’t know. There’s very likely to be another candidate emerge before January the 14th that maybe the majority of the Republicans would support cuz they’ve got to get to number 53. The 53 is the number that they’ve got to get to and neither Cook nor Burroughs was able to achieve that on Saturday.”
And yet Burrows is now using the Speaker-elect title. It doesn’t sound like his own team agrees!

Episode 3614: Author Mark Patinkin on The Holy Land at War: A Journey Through Israel, the West Bank and Gaza

A special edition of Pratt on Texas:
Our Lone Star story of the day: We talk today with journalist and author Mark Patinkin about his book: The Holy Land at War: A Journey Through Israel, the West Bank and Gaza . (Click the link to order your copy.)
Mark Patinkin has been writing a column for the Providence Journal for over 45 years, starting in 1979 at age 26. Around 6,000 columns later, he is still at it.
Patinkin has written about famine in Africa, religious conflict in India and Beirut, and recently, the Gaza War. He covered the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, where he was arrested by the secret police in Stalinist Romania for trying to interview a dissident and expelled from the country.
In addition to “The Holy Land at War,” Patinkin has written several previous books, including “An African Journey,” “The Silent War,” about the world’s most competitive companies, and “Just the Way He Was Before,” about a boy who lost both legs to bacterial meningitis but went on to play ice hockey.Patinkin was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting and was recently named columnist of the year for Gatehouse Media, now Gannett.
“The Holy Land at War ” is not a political analysis but a personal odyssey – one writer’s attempt to bear witness through those touched by this long conflict, Jews and Arabs sentenced together by history and geography.

The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: A new New York Times / Siena College poll shows Ted Cruz up over Allred just after a Dem-backed poll , made to help raise money, claimed the two were tied as of Saturday. Gromer Jeffers, Jr., of the Dallas Morning News , sure has it right: After spending the entire campaign acting as if he’s not part of the Lefty-Harris Democrat Party, Allred went all out to embrace Harris and his liberal Democrat roots in the big Harris Rally in Houston this weekend.
Despite all the glowing press reports of the huge Harris rally in Houston, was it really what it seemed ?

Our Lone Star story of the day: The local story from El Paso that I brought you earlier this week about the heavily Democrat city being down on Early Voting is now part of a bigger story that could be a good sign for Republicans . This explains why Harris left the battleground states to come to Texas for a big urban Houston, celeb-filled rally today for Senate candidate Colin Allred.

No wonder Neiman Marcus is in so much trouble it is being bought out. He took “Christmas” out of the famed “Christmas book !”

Episode 3590: Harris: Full pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens | Coverage of Roberson case one-sided, nonrational – Pratt on Texas 10/23/2024
2024/10/23
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: The Roberson capital punishment case shows why traditionalism and conservatism often lose: Even when evidence supports the conservative position, one-sided presentations based in emotionalism (the Donahue or Oprah style complete with much omission) seems to turn off the skeptical and rational switch in the heads of many.
Media stories and editorials all engage in serious sins of omission and tell us this case is a travesty of justice and yet, most all of this is built upon the lie that “shaken baby syndrome” was the entire case against Roberson. And, most of the argument comes from outsiders who are against capital punishment or have a problem with general procedural habit of Texas courts . Juror Compton’s 21-year-old memory is not evidence but the word-for-word trial transcript and evidence history is and this case was never all about the questionable “shaken baby syndrome.” You’ll easily pick that up when you read Judge Yeary’s concurring opinion here .

Our Lone Star story of the day: Democrat Leftists claim they are trying to “save Democracy,” but at about every policy point they oppose law and ordered government so what are the saving? Nowhere is this more flagrantly hypocritical than on illegal immigration * and also with voting integrity .
*The Left, including Cesar Chavez and his brother, used to claim that this was the rich capitalists exploiting illegals for cheaper labor, harming American citizens. Now the Left campaigns for the illegal cheap, imported labor that takes wage growth from lower income Americans.

This Statesman piece, Democrats highlight abortion in bid to flip Texas Supreme Court seats , demonstrates just how incompetent, ignorant, or just plain biased, are many reporters these days . Reporter Bayliss Wagner writes: “In social media posts, the [Democrat backing] PAC has painted statements like Devine’s 2012 speech as evidence that the incumbent justices can’t be trusted to rule impartially.” But then never sees the hypocrisy of the entire message that Republicans who are openly on one side of the abortion argument are claimed to be unable to “rule impartially” and yet Democrats openly on the other side of the argument are? That should be the main line of questioning of the piece given its context but it is ignored by the reporter.

Our Lone Star story of the day: Friday I explained what an overreach the Texas House Jurisprudence Committee has made in the Roberson death penalty case. Today, Governor Abbott says why; Attorney General Paxton says why, and; even another member of the Texas House says why:

In Fox interview , Kamala Harris played (?) dumb over why 70% of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track. She also deflected her failure (in our terms) on the border and illegal immigration. She referenced our “broken immigration system.” Do not be fooled by this, what the Leftist and Democrats mean by broken is limits and enforcement to begin with. Their “fixes” are almost always amnesty and making it easier for near unlimited people to enter the country at any time. That is how you fundamentally transform country – you replace a native majority with a non-native majority.

The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: The Cruz / Allred “debate” has an interesting lesson on how even when there is what seems to be hard questioning for both, there is still Leftwing bias in media driven debates. An additional problem with all the political debates is that because the questions come from, and the debate steered by, media members, rarely is there proper focus on the issues that voters actually care the most about. Stories today I used to demonstrate how the press coverage is mostly in minor issues, style, and attack liners than on what is polling as important to voters :

As expected, and hoped, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals handed Texas a big win for election integrity by stopping Judge Xavier Rodriguez and his last moment rulings against components of SB1. Rodriguez was fairly strongly chastened by the court: “On the eve of elections in Texas, the district court has entered an injunction that impacts how ballots can be handled. It holds unconstitutional a law that has been on the books for over three years, but that the court did not see fit to enjoin until now. The Supreme Court has instructed lower courts not to unduly delay ordering changes to election law until the eve of an election .”

Episode 3583: 3 new court decisions affect Texas | Smyers on SpaceX launch | Amended game room rules pass Lubbock Co. – Pratt on Texas 10/14/2024
2024/10/14
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: Three big court decisions affect Texas in different ways.
First , the Fifth Circuit has overruled a contempt charge and fine against Texas over its foster care system ; more importantly the court has removed activist, biased Judge Janis Jack from the case! This is a huge win for sanity and proper judicial behavior as well as for Texas.
Second , the very unreliable Judge Xavier Rodriguez has ruled against more Texas election integrity rules found in SB1 . Whether or not the 5th Circuit will put some of this on hold as it has previous rulings from this judge remains to be seen. Rules on voter assistance have existed way before GOP control mostly to protect people from being coerced to vote a certain way by a spouse, employer, or other party with power over them
Three , Texas’ investigatory law that has been on the books for over a century has been ruled unconstitutional . The ruling is correct in my opinion but complicates the Attorney General’s ability to investigate matters such as assisting illegal immigration.

MediaIte lists what it calls the “11 most shocking revelations in new DOJ filing ” and yet none of them are particular shocking at all and nothing on the list comes close to being anything that is a crime.
To buy into any of this one must take the position that working within the constitutional system to challenge, slow down, investigate, or correct an election is somehow a crime. Note this: “Galveston County Commissioners Court passed a budget for FY 2025 based on a property tax rate below the NNR rate. Episode 3571: Texas Senate race is in play; too many in GOP are busy playing at party politics, not working to win – Pratt on Texas 9/26/2024

Our Lone Star story of the day: The Ted Cruz, Colin Allred race is tight meaning Texas’ U.S. Senate seat is in play and yet, with some notable exceptions, the local GOP apparatus in the key counties to offset the liberal city vote, as well as the state Republican Party, is full of young people who are busy at playing party politics instead of at the hard work needed to ensure statewide victory. Work that should have kicked off in August is not being done and we are already in late September. It’s as if these folk, who have no idea how much work it took to turn this state from a Democrat swamp into a GOP stronghold, are sitting around thinking the Trump turnout will be enough to win it all. Let us pray they are right because there isn’t much work being done to ensure massive, city offsetting, turnout in the places in Texas that give Republicans solid statewide wins.

Episode 3567: Lubbock County’s Bowtie Bully tries deceiving public in tax rate presser | Texas workforce keeps growing – 9/20/2024
2024/09/20
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: Lubbock County’s Bowtie Bully, Curtis Parrish, held a press conference in which he did little but offer deception to the people about what it means to adopt the No New Revenue Rate , meaning no tax increase for next year, by commissioners Rackler and Corley properly using a provision of the law to deny the Bowtie Bully’s planed $7.5 million spending increase and accompanying tax increase.
He made such incredibly ridiculous claims such as:
Not raising taxes will destroy the county’s bond rating increasing costs in the future. Never mind that all bond payment spending is in the current budget and will be in the new budget with the No New Revenue Tax Rate.
That not adopting his $7.5 million INCREASE in spending will cause them to “make the deepest, most massive cuts in the history of the county.” That my friends is an outright, undebatable lie. The budget with not tax increase will still be larger than that of the current year.
That commissioners breaking a quorum, the only way they can prevent a big tax increase given the other three are voting for such, is the same as Democrats breaking the legislative quorum. Another baldfaced lie from the Bowtie Bully . It is against state law to break a legislative quorum but state law specifically allows for blocking a tax increase by two commissioners refusing to show up for the vote. It has been done in Lubbock County before, in Harris County, the state’s largest just a few years ago, and who knows where else in our 254 counties.
Parrish claims that, somehow, not having a tax increase and increasing spending by $7.5 million this coming year will greatly harm the county for many years to come. Really? Not growing government beyond population, inflation, and economic growth will be a harm? That’s a D.C. Democrat idea.
Interestingly, after harping on non-existent “cuts,” Sheriff Rowe admitted that a budget with the No New Revenue Tax Rate would still be a big increase in spending over the current budget when he said that he was expecting 8 new deputies with the tax increase but will only get half that amount, 4, without the tax increase.

Episode 3566: Elitism pervades all-should-vote mantra, ignores freedom of choice | A Harris/Biden border cover-up – Pratt on Texas 9/19/2024
2024/09/19
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: “Voting Deserts,” voter registration rates, turnout, and other nonsense of the Left take up much political coverage and discussion time by people on all sides and do so to the exclusion of something few harping on the matters ever think about: Individual freedom.
Most of this is in reaction to a very well written piece by Gromer Jeffers, Jr. at the Dallas Morning (s)News: In ‘voting deserts,’ D-FW advocacy groups want to drive more voters to the polls .
There is something very elitist, in the most negative sense of the word, about the entire everyone-should-register, everyone-should-vote movement when adherents to such drone on with their speculations as to why other citizens choose not to participate. It is almost always tinged with the idea that the nonvoter would share my enthusiasm for voting, almost presented as something sacred, if it weren’t for his ignorance at how to go about it, how to register, or knowing for whom he should vote.
Our republic is not well served by ignoring the right of people to not vote; it is not well served by having people vote who don’t care enough to educate themselves, and; it is not well served by people voting who are simply manipulated into the polling booth. A representative republic is based on its participants being educated and interested in self-government. Such a system is not designed to work with the input of people who don’t care.

Our Lone Star story of the day: Texas is leading the way in voter roll clean up and has removed over 1 million ineligible voters . But nevermind all of that, Democrats and their press propagandists keep with the narrative that there is little to no corruption related to voting.
The problem for Texas Democrats is that for decades most of the allegations brought to law enforcement (as well as convictions) come from Democrats charging other Democrats with cheating.
The latest episode has LULAC , the media , and Democrats claiming racism and all the other regular charges but once again, it is nothing of the sort. The Office of Attorney General is investigating ballot harvesting charges from a Democrat candidate and was requested to do so by the local district attorney. Also, the raids last week were only a step in an investigation that has gone on since 2022.
You have to skip the top section of the story, as it’s filled with agitprop for Dems, to get to the real meat of the story the media would rather bury: Warrants detail Ken Paxton’s vote harvesting investigation .

About issue polling versus candidate and party support: Data shows me that a very large plurality of voters, in this case in swing states, really have little to no idea of the positions and action of parties and candidates on the issues those same people say are most important. Here is the detailed survey data I was working from and here is the data from the North Carolina polling.

More on the Lubbock County fight to stop a big tax increase . Some media get it right, others let the pompous Curtis Parrish feed a misleading line. And while Parrish says it would be terrible to not raise taxes, Tarrant County has already passed a big tax cut . Now, the City of Fort Worth has told the city manager to redo the budget and provide a tax cut there too !
Also from Tarrant County, public schools show they are about greed for money above all – claim the move to appraise residential property every two years, instead of every year, would destroy them and harm children!

Episode 3551: Jordan Rackler on effort to stop Lubbock Co. tax increase; Flores tells the old property tax lie – Pratt on Texas 8/26/2024
2024/08/26
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: Lies from the dais in Lubbock County! For almost two decades I have spoken and written about the lies told to voters by local officeholders, often then repeated by local media, about property taxes. There are many who still do not believe me that elected officials openly lie about who it is that raises their property taxes and try to finger the appraisal districts as the primary culprit.
Today, as the courageous fight kicks off by Lubbock County’s only two conservative commissioners to stop yet another big tax increase, a longtime Lubbock County commissioner, Gilbert Flores of Precinct 3, told the big lie to those present, the lie I have been documenting for nearly twenty years!
I also interview Lubbock County Commissioner Jordan Rackler about the proposed tax increase and his push back on it.

Our Lone Star story of the day: The Texas Supreme Court has agreed to hear an expedited appeal from Attorney General Paxton in the case of the church-affiliated Annunciation House in El Paso. This is the group that has fought to keep its records secret related to its work with illegal immigrants.
And, Texas is leading 16 states in suing the Biden/Harris Administration over its rule on immigration that is well outside the bounds of what the law allows that further incentivizes and rewards illegal immigration into these United States.

Texas House Speaker, for now, Dade Phelan makes huge move to save his speakership ; brings in Texas top lobbyist (and top casino gambling lobbyist) to be his Chief of Staff. Episode 3547: Demagoguery: Fake story of registering illegals outside DPS offices to vote | Truth on Tx polling numbers – Pratt on Texas 8/22/2024
2024/08/22
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: Reports abound, investigations launched , actions taken – all for a story that didn’t read as legit from the beginning . My first take was why the heck aren’t Republicans out registering voters too!?
There is nothing illegal about registering voters outside of a DPS office and it doesn’t matter if they could have registered inside as well. And, how in the heck would an observer know if the claimed groups were engaged in registering non-citizens? Even the original, very flawed and wrong report, did not make that allegation, it simply said “immigrants.” Some of the hardest working Republicans I know are immigrants including my wife.

Episode 3545: Palo Pinto County’s un-American electioneering regulations stopped by 5th Circuit, for now – Pratt on Texas 8/19/2024
2024/08/19
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: After the home town RINO whiner, Rep. Glenn Rogers, was defeated in the Republican Primary this year, his Palo Pinto County commissioners court pals passed a slate of “electioneering regulations” designed to restrict active conservative opposition in the county. Conservatives sued and the courthouse kings got an early win in U.S. District Court but now the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has handed the county a big loss, for now:
“For the reasons herein, we conclude that the district court erred in denying Plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction. We thus VACATE the district court’s judgment and order, GRANT a preliminary injunction of the Regulations in their entirety, and REMAND for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.”

Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: The insider political deal all those years ago to indict Ken Paxton on securities fraud and then work to never let it come to trial was a political hit that blew up. Episode 3542: Rep. Burrows goes after State Fair, ignored same issue at home | GM sued by Texas for good reason – Pratt on Texas 8/14/2024
2024/08/14
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: The rightful indignation over the State Fair of Texas deciding to ban licensed concealed carry holders from having their guns at the fair, over an incident that demonstrated the need for such, is warranted by all involved.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is right to go after the City of Dallas over the issue and legislator are right to push the State Fair board to get back to the right policy of allowing licensed concealed carry.
What bothers me is state Rep. Dustin Burrows of Lubbock leading the rhetoric in this matter in the state press when his home town’s large and historic Panhandle-South Plains Fair adopted the exact same policy several years ago. Where is all the pressure and press from Burrows on the same situation in Lubbock? One might think that getting more state press notice to move up the leadership chain in the House might be more important to Burrows than actually dealing with issues at home.

Episode 3541: “Move” if you don’t like paying higher taxes annually, says Lubbock Co. Judge Curtis Parrish to citizens – Pratt on Texas 8/13/2024
2024/08/13
Info (Show/Hide)
The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish tells citizens they should “move” if they do not want to pay higher property taxes every year . He also tells Commissioner Jason Corley that the commissioner is only hearing from a small minority of voters opposing tax increases; Parrish says that Lubbock County voters want annual tax increases because paying more every year equates to “good government.” Frankly, if you listen to all of Parrish’s language in the court hearings, he speaks as a Progressive Democrat.
