Flyers get defense from trading mates
2006/03/09
Info (Show/Hide)
The Phoenix Coyotes really have no relation at all to the Philadelphia Flyers. The two are not geographically close nor do the two teams even play each other. However, the Flyers acquired thier third Coyote of the year today in defenseman Denis Gauthier as well as winger Niko Dimitrakos from San Jose. Earlier in the season you may remember that the Flyers acquired a young center by the name of Kiel McLoed from the Coyotes for Eric Chouinard and more recently Petr Nedved became a member of the Flyers team for Denis Seidenberg. Now Gauthier is just the player that the Flyers front office said they were looking for down the stretch. Don't get me wrong, Hatcher is still a very physical defensemen and Freddy Meyer is really playing physical as well but the Flyers really needed someone who was going to go one step further and get physical with the top players from the opposition. Gauthier seems to be the right fit, not only does he seem very excited to be relocated, but he had a total of 113 penalty minutes while with the Flames in the 03-04 season. Gauthier currently has a total of 61 penalty minutes so far this season so he is certainly someone who is going to get physical behind the blue line and play a more enforcer role. Dimitrakos was also acquired today from the San Jose Sharks for a 2006 third round draft pick. Bob Clarke seems to think that Dimitrakos has much more potential than his numbers really show. He has 4 goals and 12 assists in 45 games this year for the Sharks, it will be interesting to see where Dimitrakos fits into the club. Much more on this weeks edition of the Flyers Weekly Podcast.

We spend time this week on the referee's role in the NHL. The new NHL has a lot of new rules and there have been a lot more penalties called. We break down some of the calls against the Flyers this week and how the NHL may need to come up with a watchdog process to keep penalty calling fair between teams. Sidney Crosby is the new face of the NHL and has been very exciting to watch. However some of his unsportsmanlike play has been a topic of discussion. We talk about the play of Crosby that we saw this week. A full injury report and a week in preview as the Flyers face the Lightning, Bruins and Islanders this week.

Flyers Ripped With Penalty Calls
2005/11/19
Info (Show/Hide)
The Flyers lost to the Atlanta Thrashers 6-5 on Friday night, however, this was a much different team in my opinion than what we saw on Monday's loss against the Lightning. The Flyers come back to play strong, physical hockey against not only Atlanta but also Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. All this after Tampa Bay basically kicked Philly around like a rag doll down in Florida on Monday. What seems to be an ever increasing issue in the NHL is consistency among referrees and Friday nights contest was pure evidence that maybe some "watchdogs" need to be put into place in the new NHL.
I've noticed that many calls lately have been weak, some of the referees may be using the new NHL to call every little hook, check, slap, whatever. Prime example happened twice on Friday, one call against Donald Brasheer, the other against Derian Hatcher late in the game. Brasheer was called for interference (part of a double minor) on a devastating, legal open ice hit and Hatcher was called late in the game for a weak hooking penalty. If part of the new NHL is penalizing players for legal plays, than so be it, however, there must be consistency within the referees and that is just not happening. Hatcher's penalty late in the game eventually gave the Thrashers a 3 on 6 opporotunity and that help set up the tying goal. With Atlanta's goaltender pulled later in the game, Simon Gagne had an obvious breakaway opportunity only to be brought down in neutral ice, an obvious missed call that could have saved the game for the Flyers.
Obviously there were more mistakes made, the game winning goal in overtime saw de Vries and Kovalchuk beat Mike Rathje out of position, the game against Pittsburgh on Wednesday had Sidney Crosby catch the Flyers defense "standing around" and he would go on to score the game winner in overtime. However, we have seen this situation in Major League Baseball, no matter what the situation, the officials CANNOT take it upon themselves to be involved in the outcome of games. We've seen it happen so many times in professional sports where the officials seem to want to be more involved in the outcome and end up making incorrect calls which have an influence on the outcome of games. The new NHL is great, the excitement level is up, and fans are coming back to the game and with all this comes a learning experience, but there must be enforcements in place to make sure the game is called evenly and fair for both sides.
We'll talk more about this issue on the Flyers Weekly podcast this weekend.

Flyers Gear Up For Homestand
2005/11/02
Info (Show/Hide)
The Flyers are gearing up for a long homestand to start November with a visit from Washington and Atlanta this week at the Wachovia Center. The Flyers looked much better in the Sunday night contest in Ottawa against the very difficult and speedy Sens. With some sub .500 teams in coming into Philly this weekend, it's important that the Flyers take advantage of Washington and Atlanta who seem to be shorthanded for a large part of thier games this year. The Flyers will have the opprotunity to improve the power play and will need to continue improvements on the penalty killing unit. Keith Primeau will sit out both games this week due to a concussion sustained in last weeks contest against the Habs. With Primeau out, Coach Hitchcock will move Jeff Carter and R.J. Umberger into the penalty killing unit. You will probably also see more ice time from players like Patrick Sharp and Branko Radivojevic during even strength.
If you have tickets to the Thrashers game on Saturday, the Flyers will be celebrating thier 25 Millionth Fan through the turnstyles. The lucky individual recieves nothing less than a gold mine winning prizes like: a Sharp-Aquos LCD-HD TV, a seven day trip to Florida, an opprotunity to ride the Zamboni during the intermission of the game, a limo ride to diner at the Victors club in the Wachovia Center for a future Flyers game and about 10 other very valuable prizes. All this for entering the Wachovia Center at just the right time. WOW... If you win, don't forget about Flyers Weekly. For the full rundown of prizes, click here
Finally, anyone remember Alexandre Daigle? Didn't think so, I personally tried to forget. Yea, anyway, well he is still around believe it or not and playing with the Minnesota Wild. There is an interesting article on the former Flyer at NHL.com. Check it out here

The First Of Many
2005/10/07
Info (Show/Hide)
Martin Brodeur will certainly be recovering from a 5 goal hangover tomorrow as the Flyers got thier first win of the 2005-06 season with a 5-2 victory over the Devils. Simon Gagne scored 2 goals and Peter Forsberg had 2 assists to help the cause. Michal Handzus, Turner Stevenson and Jon Sim also had goals for the Flyers.
Even with Dennis Seidenberg and Derian Hatcher out, the defense looked much better in tonights win than they did in the opener on Wednesday against the Rangers. Special teams may be the struggle as the Devils scored both of thier goals on the power play and the Flyers went 0 for 5 with the advantage. Because of the rule changes, there will be more chances with a man advantage, the Flyers need to step up on special teams and score more on the power play and allow less while shorthanded.
Antero Nittymaki started the game in place of Robert Esche and there is no goaltender controversy in Philly. Due to the way the schedule is set up this year, Hitchcock said he wanted to get Nittymaki a few starts right from the beginning of the season. Nittymaki is now 4-0 in NHL play continuing his unbeaten streak from the 2003-04 season. Nittymaki was quick, he is moving out of the net much better and seems to be ahead of plays coming his way. This was also much more of a physical game for the Flyers as Primeau and Brashear were obviously trying to send a message that this is a physical team. We'll recap the Rangers and Devils games this week on the Flyers Weekly podcast.
